Good fucking riddance to Reddit. You might have been the last real person (not bot/AI) commenting on anything over there.
Why would you have a "work account" for Reddit?

Count your self lucky the local authorities haven't come to your door to question you about such a comment...
I was banned last night. There must be a crack down going on. Multiple accounts on multiple emails. Definitely on a DHS list now I guess.
Fuck it. I'm not going back. I suspect any reasonable person is getting kicked off the platform. Shits fucked
How to get around this:
Why the fuck are you on an enemy's weapons system? Yes, you will have to make peace with permanently being excluded from what is essentialy 1/3 of the internet, but they are REALLY evil. It's like an abussive partner leaving you.
Good riddance.
Also happened to my account from 2008 around the time of the API purge (and all my alt accounts except one). Banned me for "report abuse" because I reported too many blatant ads as spam. They had just killed off my favorite 3rd party app so I needed an excuse to leave anyway. Joined Lemm.ee and never looked back.
(And then Lemm.ee shut down so now my side account is my main account.)
I just picked up another permanent ban in one of the Ukraine subreddits on a post that showed a Russian solder walking with a crutch. Someone was pointing out hat it looked like he was faking it. I replied something like "Well, a drone will probably sort things about either way". Apparently this is supporting violence now.
I've been on reddit since 2009. The place sure has gone fucking downhill. It was bad enough in the_donald days when the admins went so far out of their way and up their own butt to accommodate those fascists, but now this fucking AI moderation is just stupid.
I've lost about three accounts in the past year or two because things that used to be well within the norms are now considered harrassment. I'm fine with polite conversation, but jesus fucking christ they have gone absolutely overboard.
I'm waiting a couple of days before I create a new account, and again backing off my participation there - at this point to just my local city subreddit and one other that I was moderating. But that's it. Fuck the rest of reddit.
The lesson is we need platforms like lemmy. Don't ever support any corporate platforms they may seem nice now but it always ends badly.
I got a "permaban" about 3 years ago. Last month I was unbanned with no notification. Apparently you can just wait?
yes. i have been permabanned and unbanned three times now.
all in the past 3 years. it's insane. I'm probably unbanned again already but I don't really care anymore. my bans were for the most innocuous comments take out of context and all from AI tools and angry losers who report you for disagreeing with them.
i used reddit for a decade with zero incidents, mostly on one account with a few throwaways. my opinions haven't changed really either, but now apparently I am a sexist and racist and violent person for pointing out that sexism, racism, and violence exist.
Guy gets his 19yo account perma'd
Tons of Wordword#### accounts with hidden post/comment history flooding reddit and render common subs unusable
Reddit: Fuck you and your two accounts, man. We hate multi-account users here.
Your first mistake was criticising Netanyahu. You do not criticise the supreme leader Your second mistake was using Reddit I think this ban has fixed the second one for you. Welcome to thelemmyclub 🤗
It's actually quite a horrible feeling, initially. I was there from near the beginning, through the glory days to the enshitification. Got banned from a sub by an overzealous mod on AskUK. Then perma-banned for 'ban-evasion', simply for using another "throwaway" account, which was common practice for years.
Now I'm on Lemmy I'm never going back, even if I could (which is harder than you might think).
Yes, this place is way smaller, but I've met almost no dickheads or bots in the year or so I've been here. It's nice. I had a gander at Reddit the other day and it reinforced my affection for this platform and utter disdain for Reddit in general. They've absolutely wrecked it.
I got banned after 12 years, and a million Karma, in the Post-Inauguration bloodbath. I got around it with alt accounts for a while, but they caught up faster and faster. The first one lasted about 3 months, but by the end, I was getting tracked down and banned before my first comment was even posted.
People like us, who were there near the beginning, when nobody had heard of Reddit, built that site into what it became. Without us, it has become a cesspool of bots, trolls, novelty accounts, Russian Propaganda Farmers, Corporate manipulators, etc., and especially abusive Mods.
Too bad, it was great for a while.
If they can track you to this extent, imagine what they do with data you do not know they have. Reddit is an AI bot cesspool now. A good portion of content there are not real
They must be using a phone. From what I understand, those have like a digital fingerprint of some sort so it's insanely easy for sites to track you. On a computer, you should be able to just re-start the modem and get a new IP address and wait a day.
The way they catch people, via a computer at least, is that someone living in a suburb will keep trying to immediately re-register and start posting and subscribing to the exact same subs. Since there won't be a lot of people registering from that IP address, they can be pretty sure it's a ban evasion. If you're registering from Manhattan, I can't think of a way they can be sure a new register is a ban evasion.
Except maybe if you're using the same browser which will store cookies from the site. But if you use a new browser or clean out those cookies, you should be fine. Actually, cookies are probably the main way they catch ban evasions. There's probably a cookie that gets placed in the browser when you're banned and when you register the site will check for it.
Your account got flagged by bots or mass reported, abusing automod tools they flagged your remaining accounts as ban evasion. With the current moderation system there is nothing you can realistically do.
Starting with a new account is practically impossibile, and karma is a huge roadblock that is now just used to farm bots.
Come to think of it, I don't even like using that site, even for hobbies.
There's a suspicious number of word-word-number accounts that are deleting or overshadowing other users.
Bad deals over there.
Anyone managed to get around this?
Didn't even try. It was the impetus I needed to finally leave reddit. I'd also been on there for a long time, and i was putting in an hour or so each day. It wasn't really doing me any good, and when I adjusted I felt better to be away from it. Lemmy scratches the itch but is small enough that it doesn't consume much time. I do more reading and gaming now when I'm free. Years spent on reddit and big karma numbers are a sunk cost that makes it hard to leave.
Anyone managed to get around this?
Considering how some people run hundreds of bots it must be possible.
You can't get around the bans. They move heaven and earth to fingerprint you.
Don't worry about it. Many of us are in the same boat. I actually think reddit doesn't want human users anymore. They want to be a bot-only outfit.
That's what I don't understand: why go so much out of your way to spite an user just because they broke some rule?
At the rate they are going they'll end up with no one left except for bots.
Anyone managed to get around this?
Around what? They did you a favor.
Not sure what the business plan is for banning everyone, must be an AI strategy we are too stupid to understand.
Honest question, is there anything to stop the same thing from happening on Lemmy if the admins of your instance don't like you?
probably not, but on the fediverse you can be your own admin
what were the comments? do you remember them or have screenshots?
I'm curious as to whether disagreeing with their viewpoint is banable, or if your disagreement was rude/offensive in some other way that earned the bann
either way, good job, congratulations, and welcome
9 out of 10 "I got banned for no reason" posts, you find the offending content and think "oh shit, OP sucks."
Not saying that this OP sucks, just that the lack of context is suspect. And of course reddit suck, and mods suck.
That used to be the case, but the AI moderation is really going stupid. I posted elsewhere about what got me permabanned. It's bullshit.
That said, you are still decently correct. A lot of people get legitimate bans. But reddit's AI moderation has also gone off the deep end.
If it helps, I'm the "father" of /r/nottheonion, was a default mod, hung out with admins in IRC back in the day...... not that it makes me super awesome, but I'm also not totally a 'random' guy. heh
OP gave context - criticizing Israel. If that means 9 of 10 bannees are to be considered assholes, then I'll proudly wear that moniker.
OP provided their version of context. At face value, I agree with you. But did OP use a racial slur? Anti-Semitic talking points? Did OP call for violence or threaten someone? When I say OP didn't provide context, I mean they didn't provide anything backing up their context. They just said they were banned for being critical of Netanyahu and Israel being engaged in genocide. It's been years since I made a reddit comment, but I know I made many similar comments back then and never received a ban, so either the mods were being feckless and arbitrary (certainly a possibility) or OP did more than they claimed. Either way, we're lacking the context to know either way.
I used to mod a few subs, and I can't tell you how many shitbags would come into the sub throwing slurs and threats around, only to blame us for overreacting when they were banned. That's like the default response to earning a ban. I also saw mods act like power-tripping toddlers who would ban anyone that didn't kiss their toes. My experience was more the former than the latter, but that's just my experience.
I have no idea what op did but you are dead on with some people. I was going to post a hypothetical as a joke but couldn't think of any that were in good taste.
Before you delete your 20 year old reddit account, take the time to carefully delete everything on that account -posts, comments, chats, everything- they are relying on you leaving that data so they feed their AI with it after you are gone. Simply deleting your account is not enough
Won't work. They have backups of everything you have ever done on there. They will just restore the backups and then ban you so you can't do that again. It's the bargain you made when you created an account with them.
You are not deleting your account, only to return with a new account. Reddit has become a cesspool and it would be a wise decision to leave with all your data.
You may corrupt your data before leaving so it overwrites the backup. Someone used an auto app that replaced all their posts with random gibberish. It took about a week, this is something you might explore if it addresses your concerns.
I did the same. It was all restored within a couple of weeks. I've since done it again twice and just checked - it's all back.
Reddit has become a corporate protector of the Epstein Pedophiles. Say too much negative about them and they ban permanently. I know that's not why you were banned, but the mods there have gotten really annoying with permanent bans for thin reasons. Erase Reddit. Join Lemmy and enjoy freedom.
My 13 year old account was permabanned years ago. I'm probably on my 40th Reddit account now.
I only use Reddit on desktop while at work (might as well get paid to use that garbage). I use the Brave browser and only use private windows. When I'm banned I reset the browser's settings, making sure everything gets cleared. I open up a new private window, create a new throwaway account on Outlook.com, use it to create a new Reddit account, then I'm back in until I get banned for trying to discuss my Constitutional rights or shit talk a Trump supporter, or whatever else Reddit bans you for these days. I even have a browser script that auto-adds all my subs from my previous account, so I don't lose them.
Now, I remember when my original account was banned, if I tried to create a new one on my phone and login using the 3rd party app I used to use, then it would be instabanned. So I'm not sure if they log phone's MAC addresses. But computers have MAC addresses too. So I don't know. All I know is this method has been working for me at work for years now. The accounts I create are good for weeks/months until I do one of the many, many things Reddit bot bans you for.
Reddit is a shit platform now and it operates under an unsustainable model that's going to continue driving people to other platforms, so its heyday is past. I wouldn't worry too much if you never use it again. I just use it to combat misinformation, shit talk loser conservatives (fascists), and promote Lemmy.
