Just FYI at least here I get compensated for my work as a voluntary firefighter. Not sure how much anymore but it is around 25 bucks per hour. Made like 1k last year, had not really a lot to do except training and 2-3 smaller incidents.
But yeah I don't do it for the money, I learned about that in basic training 😁

Yes, of course. If you lived in a society where everyone contributed their labor freely in return for access to all of the fruits of the labour of others, wouldn't you be happy to work as a plumber or an electrician in that society? We work to pay our bills, but if we didn't have bills, if everyone was just provided for, by default, why would you need to be paid to work? Why wouldn't you want to give back to a system that gives so much benefits to you?

Australia. We have regular firefighters and volunteers.
Volunteers don’t want to get paid as they believe it will diminish their work and make their coworkers whose lives they depend on be less reliable due to being money motivated over helping their community.
My Minecraft survival world is awesome, but I think in this context "productive" is usually referring to, you know, farming and stuff.
Honestly if people didnt need to take the first job they could under threat of homelessness i truly believe enough people will just end up doing everything we need done out of the sheer need to do something
