Car-supremacy is a psychological disorder. Humans moving independently in large volumes through shared spaces is very normal in a lot of places. I've seen it when traveling outside of the US mostly. It's a cooperative mode of transportation coordination, so it doesn't really work out if the dominant culture and infrastructure is designed from a perspective of hyper-individualism.

The closest thing to this in is social bike rides like Critical Mass, where the flocking behavior that comes so naturally gets to exist in the public roads very briefly.
