Why is the Canada Pension Plan investing in projects to improve the US in the first place? We should be improving our own lives and infrastructure.

Geographic diversification is the stated reason. At least it's green infrastructure. Hopefully they take the project somewhere better.

Because traditionally, wealthy Canadians don't invest in the rest of Canada, they invest in Britain, the US or the EU. Canada doesn't grow very fast so value grows slowly. Of course, the reason Canada doesn't grow very fast is Canadians don't invest in Canada. Kinda one of those "vicious cycle" things.

The Canada Pension Fund is NOT for rich people to use. It's mandated by the government to make sure that the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) funding for retired and disabled Canadians is adequate for our needs.

Quick question, who manages the funds? Is it us? Or is it a bunch of wealthy finance bros "because obviously they know how to make money."

[-] girlfreddy@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago

The fund is managed by the federal government.

Read up on it.

Why is the vast majority of our PM's investments in the USA?

Mark Carney has investments in 567 organizations. Only three are Canadian

Because Carney was always a fiscal conservative piece of shit. Not a literal Nazi piece of shit like Poilievre but not far off.

As a disabled adult who is on a fixed canada pension i have tried to lobby my MP about divesting from US markets for years now. He ignores me. Won't answer my calls or emails. Refuses to make appointments.

No one cares. This will continue and I imagine that demand for oil and gas investment will be met.

[-] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 30 points 5 days ago

Here's an idea...pull all investments from US infrastructure projects and invest that money in Canada instead. Fuck the US, and fuck Trump in particular.

C'MON, BIG BEAUTIFUL OBITUARY

[-] ProdigiousInsanity@lemmus.org 10 points 4 days ago

JFC, diaper Donnie must have heavily invested in coal and oil markets for him to be so against any greener tech. Because the only way he would care is if it would cost him money.

Nah, he also cares about things he hates. Vengeance against anything he thinks wronged him, like the concept of wind turbines, is the strongest driving force for him. Avarice is present, and it does move him, but I think he would sacrifice money to hurt someone he was mad at.

Yep. Only "Pussy ass Commie Liberals" like green energy.

I think he causes cancer just by existing....

[-] Routhinator@startrek.website 25 points 5 days ago

WTF, we are going to fight this right Carney?

[-] funkajunk@lemmy.world 24 points 5 days ago

This is just another sign that we should work to distance ourselves as much as we can from them

[-] i_stole_ur_taco@lemmy.ca 6 points 5 days ago

We will for sure be expressing concern and alarm. Possibly even trepidation!

[-] reluctant_squidd@lemmy.ca 20 points 5 days ago

Time to gather NATO and drop those US bonds!

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago

As afraid as I am of that, being stuck here, this is what needs to happen. Dollar needs to crash now.

It is not a Canadian owned project. The company is Canadian. It's a US project.

[-] DrDahmer@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

So a company from Canada is doing the work..?
