Image is of the Herðubreið tuya in northeast Iceland, formed when ice sheets covered Iceland thousands of years ago. It's not really relevant to the Grindavik situation but I think they look neat. The title also doesn't make much sense but I saw the pun and took it.

Off in Iceland, different kinds of tunnels are causing problems. Underneath the town of Grindavik in southwestern Iceland, not far from the capital of Reykjavik, tens of thousands of earthquakes are portending the movement of magma in tunnels underneath the peninsula, which could breach the surface and cause an eruption. The 4000 residents of the town have been evacuated as the magma has risen to less than a kilometer below the surface.^TRG^

Icelandic volcanism is pretty fascinating, with the country sitting on the mid-Atlantic ridge, the birthing line of new oceanic crustal rock running right down the Atlantic ocean for many thousands of kilometers, as well as a hotspot, an upwelling of mantle material of debated origin which also feeds otherwise-inexplicable volcanism in the middle of tectonic plates, like Yellowstone and Hawaii.

An additional factor here is the presence of glaciers. When a volcano erupts underneath a glacier, the melting water cools the lava rapidly, causing features usually seen in volcanoes that erupt under the sea like pillow basalts, but also unique features like tuyas, which are steep-sided but flat-topped volcanoes. The rapid melting of water can also cause glacial floods called jökulhlaups.

Icelandic volcanoes have had significant regional and even global impacts in the past. In 2010, the volcano Eyjafjallajökull, which was a volcano covered by an ice cap, erupted and the ash cloud spread across Europe, causing airline disruption for about a month which caused nearly $2 billion in total losses for airline companies - though this seems pretty quaint compared to the pandemic's impact on airlines in retrospect. Back in the 1780s, the Laki volcano killed a quarter of the Icelandic population due to sulphur dioxide causing massive crop failure and cattle death. This eruption's impacts spread to Europe and beyond, causing notable worldwide temperature drops and thus crop failures and may well have been a contributing factor to the outbreak of the French Revolution, which obviously heralded the death of the feudal order and the eventual primacy of capitalism in its place. That being said, any eruption at Grindavik is very probably not going to have any significant worldwide impacts - there are over a hundred volcanoes already in Iceland, and regular climate change is doing a great job at causing mayhem right now anyway. It's also still possible that there won't be an eruption at all, at least not in the short to medium term.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

The global transition from capitalism to socialism is going to take a long time. Don't panic about the outcome of one bourgeois election. Socialism is inevitable.

Rybar on the propaganda spread yesterday that Hamas had been fully defeated: False and in reality Israel only entered 2 blocks into dense urban areas.

spoiler🇮🇱🇵🇸 After the publication of the sensational photograph yesterday of Israeli soldiers inside the Gaza Legislative Assembly on the Internet (from the Israeli side), the following narratives began to spread:

▪️ Hamas suffered a military destruction and cowardly fled to the south of the enclave;

▪️ Hamas's military infrastructure has been completely destroyed and its ability to defend itself has been lost;

▪️ The Hamas command cowardly abandoned its fighters in Gaza alone with the powerful Israeli military.

The truth is that yesterday the operation to cover and blockade Gaza City from all sides was completed, and the next stage began: gnawing into dense urban development. Moreover, we were able to enter only from two blocks - Al-Sheikh Ijlin and Az-Zeitun - and from there we moved to Tell al-Hawa, where the Al-Shifa hospital, the Square of the Unknown Soldier and the very legislative assembly building where the photograph was taken are located (everything is quite clear here on the video card).

And now the Israelis, faced with the need to clear Gaza in dense urban areas, making their way through the streets destroyed as a result of their attacks, are putting psychological pressure on, trying to reduce the cost of the battles for the capital of the enclave.

Resistance News Network

::: spoiler 🚨 Ministry of Health spokesman: We hear gunfire inside Al-Shifa Medical Complex. 4.5h ago

  • Ministry of Health spokesman:
There is nothing that justifies firing inside the hospital as there is no form of resistance present in it. What the "israeli" occupation is doing constitutes terrorism against those in the complex.
    4.5h ago
  • 🚨 Ministry of Health spokesman:
A number of windows in Al-Shifa Hospital were shattered as a result of the occupation bombings in Al-Shifa Complex.

🚨 The US-funded IOF has stormed parts of Al-Shifa Medical Complex in northern #Gaza.

🚨 Resistance fighters open fire on occupation forces that are invading #Jenin at these moments.

  • 🟢 Hamas:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

We hold the occupation and President Biden fully responsible for the Nazi occupation army's invasion on the Al-Shifa Medical Complex.

We hold the occupying entity and its new Nazi leaders, along with President Biden and his administration, fully responsible for the consequences of the occupation army's raid on the Al-Shifa Medical Complex, and what the medical staff and thousands of displaced persons are subjected to, as a result of this brutal crime against a health facility protected under the Fourth Geneva Convention. The leaders of the occupation and all those who conspired with them in killing children, patients, and unarmed civilians will be held accountable.

The adoption by the White House and the Pentagon of the occupation's false narrative, claiming the resistance's use of the Al-Shifa Medical Complex for military purposes, served as a green light for the occupation to commit more massacres against civilians to forcibly displace them from the north to the south, completing the occupation's plan to displace our people, as stated by many ministers of the occupying entity.

The silence of the United Nations, and the betrayal of many countries and regimes, will not deter our Palestinian people from clinging to their land, their legitimate national rights. We will remain committed to our people by continuing to defend them and their rights with all our strength. The occupation will pay dearly for its crimes and aggression against our children, women, and sanctities.

Gaza has been and will remain a graveyard for the invaders, and tomorrow is near for those who wait.

And indeed, it is a jihad of victory or martyrdom.

  • 🚨 BREAKING - Ismail Al-Thawabta, Director General of the Government Media Office:
Occupation forces storm Al-Shifa Hospital and open fire inside patient rooms. What the occupation is doing in Al-Shifa Hospital is a war crime.

🚨 IOF warplanes are carrying out raids in Khan Younis, southern #Gaza. An IOF airstrike also bombed the Al-Abrar Mosque in northern #Gaza moments ago.

  • ⚫️ PIJ Political Bureau Member Sheikh Ali Shaheen:
The United States of America is complicit in the crime being committed by the occupation in the raid on Al-Shifa Medical Hospital.

The occupation army is unable to achieve any military objectives in Gaza, so it exerts strength against civilians and patients at Al-Shifa Hospital, trying to obtain an image of victory to present to the settler public.

The statements of the American President Joe Biden about his opposition to targeting hospitals were false and deceptive; they are a cover-up for the crime that the occupation is now committing in Gaza. Therefore, we hold the American administration fully responsible for what is happening.

  • 🚨 Ministry of Health in Gaza:
Dozens of soldiers entered the emergency department building in the Al-Shifa Medical Complex. "Israeli" army tanks entered the Medical Complex campus.

-Head of the Burns Department at Al-Shifa Hospital, Ahmed Al-Makhallati:
The Red Cross is part of the collusion that takes place between the occupation and international institutions.

The Red Cross has not provided any services in terms of securing hospitals, discharging patients, and protecting healthcare institutions.

  • Ismail Al-Thawabta, Director General of the Government Media Office:
We have appealed to all international organizations and the Red Cross for days to save the wounded in Al-Shifa Complex, but they refused to respond and aligned themselves with the objectives of the occupation, bearing part of the responsibility for what is happening.

-🚨 Via Quds News Network:
After occupation forces stormed parts of Al-Shifa Medical Complex, they placed a phone call to the hospital’s Director of Health, Dr. Munir Al-Barsh, ordering him to report to the site of their raid. Al-Barsh refused and said: “I work as a doctor and am performing my duty at Al-Shifa Complex, and I do not cooperate with the occupation.”

  • 🟢 Member of Hamas Political Bureau, Izzat Al-Rishq:
Netanyahu's and his defeated army's attempt to portray their tanks' intrusion and the storming of Al-Shifa Hospital by his defeated army as an achievement is political adolescence. It is an exposed play will deceive no one and will not be believed by anyone.

Al-Shifa Hospital, which is older than the occupation itself, shelters patients, injured, doctors, and nurses, as well as displaced children, women, and the elderly. The arrival of the occupation's tanks to Al-Shifa is not an achievement. Al-Shifa is a civilian medical facility, not a military barracks.

Netanyahu's and his army's attempt to depict this as an achievement or victory reflects their failure, confusion, and the depth of defeat they have suffered. The White House and the Pentagon joining the zionist campaign of lies about Al-Shifa being used by the resistance makes President Biden a full partner with the occupation in this crime and in the genocide our Palestinian people are facing. Their storming of Al-Shifa Hospital means that they will sink deeper and deeper into the quagmire of Gaza, creating more opportunities for the heroic of Al-Qassam to target them and inflict more losses. 2h ago

-🚨 Communications are cut off with the Al-Shifa Medical Complex in #Gaza as the IOF try to control information about the situation inside it.
1.5h ago

  • 🚨 Director General of Hospitals in Gaza, Dr. Muhammad Zaqout, to Al-Jazeera:
The occupation army entered the emergency department of the Shifa Complex and is now searching the hospital’s basement.

Not a single bullet was fired from within the hospital during the occupation forces’ storming of the complex.

The occupation opened fire on those who left the corridor that they claimed was safe to exit the Al-Shifa Complex.

The occupation forces stormed the surgical and emergency buildings in the Al-Shifa Complex.
1.5h ago

-🔻 The IOF admits to the killing of another two soldiers in northern #Gaza, as well as the serious injury of four others.
1h ago

-🚨 Director General of Hospitals in Gaza, Dr. Muhammad Zaqout:
The occupation army believed that its soldiers entering the Al-Shifa Medical Complex would be a victory for it, but it did not find any evidence of the presence of resistance.

We have been communicating with the Egyptian side for 5 days and asked them to coordinate the entry of premature babies into Egypt, but we have not received any response from them.

Got a response to an email to my Congressman about Palestine. It was a stock response supporting the 4 hour per day "humanitarian pause".

I replied and specifically requested a personal response, I'll see what I get. It's hard to toe the line of getting my point across and not saying something "extreme" enough (like "settler-colonialism is bad, actually") to cause them to just dismiss everything I say.

I'm mainly curious what goes through their head when they see so many people and international humanitarian organizations calling for a ceasefire and decide against it, but you can hardly get in someone's head if what you say just shuts them out of listening to you.

Interesting article

"January 27th was also the annual "International Holocaust Remembrance Day", falling on the day of the Soviet Union’s liberation of the prisoners in the Nazi German slavery and extermination camp Auschwitz. The day is commemorated by a slew of imperialist organizations, from the US-regime controlled United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and NATO to the normalizing Arab regimes. Astonishingly, none of the official observance statements pay tribute to the Soviet Union or its Red Army, who actually liberated the Nazi camps and played the primary role in smashing the German settler project of turning Eastern Europe into a "new West Indies". Nor do they acknowledge the 27 million soviets who paid their lives in that struggle. Rather, the commemoration, which was only created 60 years after, only references that six million Jews were killed. In 2023, Russia was specifically dis-invited from the commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz—liberation without the liberators; history rewritten.

This is a manipulation of history to separate Nazi Germany from European colonialism and its centuries of extermination campaigns. The narrative of six million "sacred victims" exists ultimately to justify the imperialist's endless wars of aggression, now marketed under the catchphrase of "stopping genocide". The Zionist entity is but one front of this.

The same year that the US-led UN created "International Holocaust Remembrance Day" the UN also formalized the policy of "Responsibility to Protect" (R2P). R2P is the idea that the UN and the imperialist powers of the West have a “responsibility” to wage war in the case of genocide. Genocide of course is defined by them, and its application is always carefully contrived to serve their strategies. This “human rights” justification has been the basis for many crimes against humanity including the destruction of Libya.

R2P, the definition and weaponization of genocide, the Holocaust, and antisemitism are all deeply connected in liberal humanism. The official EU and liberal humanist position—codified in the “Prague declaration”--promotes the myth of “double genocide” that equates Nazism with Communism. It is a revisionism in defense of “the good Nazis” who fought against communism to create a Zionism for Ukraine. This lineage explains the Western defense of Ukrainian Nationalists who follow Nazi-collaborator Stepan Bandera whose OUN-B organization killed hundreds of thousands of Poles and Soviets and specifically targeted Jews. In 2022, both the United States and ‘israel’ hosted delegations from the Nazi Azov regiment, who are known to use 'Israeli' weapons.

This is not new. The Zionists also engaged in many economic, security, and migration agreements with Nazi Germany such as the 1933 Haavara (Transfer) Agreement between the “Father of Zionism” Ben-Gurion & Adolf Hitler.

We can conclude that "combating antisemitism" is a meaningless concept today. Its contemporary articulation has been shaped solely for the purposes of imperialist domination.

It’s time to stop saying “Anti-Zionism is not antisemitism”. This empty statement is repeated time and time again in the circles of Zionist ‘anti-Zionists’. The implication is that “anti-Zionism is not antisemitism, but yes, armed struggle against Jewish occupiers is reprehensible”. This narrative is an attempt to make the Palestinian liberation movement another toothless ‘anti-racist’ cause for Western liberal sponsors.

Palestinian Liberation will require the elimination of many Jewish occupiers in Palestine—that is an indisputable fact. Who cares if that fact is considered 'antisemitic' by imperialists?"

New Hersh Article. Everything is going great for the IDF, they have only lost one tank in Gaza and are closing in on the Hamas HQ at Al-Shifa Hospital, where all the hostages are in the basement, while closing off all the Hamas tunnels and thinking about using CS nerve gas in them. Hamas is willing to negotiate in earnest now, unlike before, because of this (Poster's Note: Please ignore the mulitple public statements Hamas made about negotiating for a prisoner swap since 10/7). Entirely coincidentally, Sy also admits what the news mega already knew, which is that he has no sources in or close to Hamas.

Bibi isn't listening to the White House because he views it as weak and leaderless, plus they keep sending him weapons. He is trying to turn himself into a hero by destroying Hamas to avoid prosecution. His plan is to turn Gaza into the West West Bank and make Mohammad Dahlan, former leader of Fatah in Gaza, the new head of the PA.

::: spoiler HAMAS' ALAMO, PT. 1

Hamas, with its leadership in flight and its fighters surrounded and outgunned in sniper fire near the still standing hospitals in Gaza City, has begun talking about an exchange of Hamas prisoners in Israel for the hostages it captured in its surprise terrorist attack on October 7. The initial proposal went nowhere but Israeli officials were more than willing to talk. The last minute Hamas offer suggested that many of the hostages are still alive.

The initial Hamas offer was a nonstarter. Hamas proposed that it would release a total of 113 hostages that would include women, the elderly, the young, and foreigners. In return it asked for the release of 240 jailed Hamas women and teenagers. The offer came with a condition: that the hostages would not be released until the Hamas prisoners were delivered into the hands of a foreign entity. Israel immediately rejected the offer, a knowledgeable Israeli insider told me, “because we don’t believe anything Hamas says.” He added, however, that Israel was continuing to talk with Hamas about an exchange.

The change in approach came on a day in which Israel learned that the two major leaders of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas political leader in Gaza, and Mohammed Deif, its military leader, had fled Gaza City for the south. “The do-or-die leadership are not ready to die,” the Israeli insider told me. The offer came after a day of a sniper fire near Al-Shifa Hospital and five other targeted hospitals in Gaza City. “There was no need to bomb now.”

There was another reason Israel was reluctant to make the trade. The continuing collapse of the Hamas tunnel system—a result of the constant Israeli bombing—has left clues suggesting where the Israeli hostages might be kept. There was pressure from the Israeli special operations community to consider a Entebbe-style raid that could free the hostages without bargaining.

There was yet another offer from Hamas, I was told. It proposed a 72-hour ceasefire that, if agreed to, would give it time to find and recover hostages from the October 7 attack who were seized by local Gaza City residents who took advantage of the suddenly opened border to rob and steal and perhaps return home with an Israeli hostage. There could be more than a few of such souls who are still alive. At least two other terrorist groups also entered the city and came away with hostages. Negotiations about that possibility also were ongoing, the insider said.

The change in tone, I was told, was a sign that the war is moving quickly toward a settlement. A knowledgeable American official told me that the talk about trading hostages for prisoners has led to hope in the American intelligence community because Hamas, “now facing surrender or death, had a last chance to get any benefits from hostages. Hamas had dismissed as cowards anyone who was not willing to die for Allah. We shall see.”

The sudden breakthrough came amid earlier reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had written off the possibility of any last-minute hostage release talks and was committed to the annihilation of Hamas, even if it means the possible use of riot control gas, with its dire history for the Jewish state, in the labyrinth of tunnels that are being systematically sealed off by the Israeli Ground Forces.

I delayed publishing the story because I was told by the American official that the surviving hostages—who are mostly Israeli but also include American, Russian, and Thai citizens—now in their sixth week of underground captivity, had moved or were being moved from the tunnel system into a second or third basement level of the Al-Shifa Hospital. The hospital, with its extensive campus, has long been known by Israeli intelligence to be a Hamas redoubt and perhaps the last existing Hamas command-and-control center in Gaza City. There were hopes, as I wrote last Sunday, of a last-minute release of some hostages—not including those with any ties to the IDF—being traded for a Hamas prisoner release. But nothing has yet materialized. “Israel is still trying to negotiate a way out for the hostages,” the official told me, “but Hamas must surrender first and bring the hostages out.”

The Israel intelligence community, with its superb ability in signals intelligence, had earlier assessed that the surviving hostages may have been transferred from the tunnels to the basement of Al-Shifa. Intercepts of recent Hamas requests for medical care and drugs suggest that some of the hostages—many are seventy years of age or older—have died in captivity. The neighborhood adjacent to the hospital—some 35 to 45 blocks—has been heavily bombed, and Al-Shifa is seen, in the official’s words, as “the last stand. The Alamo. They are planning to come in shooting,” he said of the Israeli Air Force, whose mission would be to destroy the hospital, with its many wings, and expose the tunnel openings, for the follow-on infantry forces.

The continued bombing is now aimed at destroying the last of the emptied Gaza City apartment and office buildings believed to mask the last available underground links to the Hamas tunnel complex. Those buildings have been the primary targets of the Israeli Air Force since the war began in the aftermath of Hamas’s surprise cross-border terrorist attack on October 7 that took 1,200 Israeli lives, including women and children and elderly victims.

The Israeli response—bombings that have so far taken more than 11,000 lives, according to the Gazan Health Ministry, many of them children, and the forced relocation of untold numbers of noncombatant civilians in search of water and food to overcrowded tent cities in the south of Gaza—has been widely condemned in protest marches around the world. The marches are not in support of the October 7 Hamas attacks, but against what is seen as a disproportionate military response in violation of international law. Those inside Israel who object to the bombing are being silenced but not those worldwide, including many throughout America who have marched and protested against the Israeli bombings in Gaza.

I love how every tunnel entrance is supposedly in a building but all of the video Hamas publishes shows them climbing out of a hole by some shrubs
