Most of the theists I've spoken to don't really entirely believe in their religion, they say they just need something to believe in. If it provides them peace and comfort, I guess it should be fine.
This is certainly the obstacle I had to overcome going from a more spiritually minded agnosticism to a purer naturalism. I didn't want to confront my inevitable death and ultimate insignificance. It was especially rough looking at the catastrophic risk posed by the climat crisis and plastic crisis that the human species may not last a few centuries.
I'm an absurdist now.
In some ways one can be envious of people who are able to believe in a higher power than themselves. It certainly has it upsides.
Nah, I don't envy the capacity for self-inflicted delusion. It could worsen my undoubtedly existing blind spots.
Yeah, that's why most theists believe in objective reality. They want to think there really is something beyond their own senses. Fools.
Unicorns do exist. We just call them rhinoceros. Unfortunately, the description got a bit scrambled. Chinese whispers was a real issue, back in medieval times.
A rhino could be described as "A large, grey horse like creature with a large horn, and an angry temperament." Since no horse is white (they are all technical "grey"), people at home will likely envision a large white, majestic, stallion. Combine this with entrepreneurial sailers, selling narwhal tusks as "unicorn horns" and they misunderstanding makes complete sense.
Real Unicorns have curves!
There's a non-sinophobic name for the game, it's called "Telephone." You might need to say "the Telephone game" or "playing Telephone" to be clear, although just the quote marks and capital T might be enough to indicate it's not a literal telephone call.
I learned it as broken telephone.
I have never in my life heard the phrase "Chinese whispers" used to describe a game of telephone.
In fact, I've never heard the phrase, "Chinese whispers" at all.
Most rhinoceroses have more than one horn, making them by definition not unicorns.
The irony here:
Just cuz they’re fat…. Sheesh
It's pretty likely that that was literally the inspiration for the "unicorn" and they just got it wrong. I mean, damn, medieval artists couldn't even draw a HORSE so it's no surprise that something slightly more exotic like a rhino would get scrambled.
Even the word "unicorn" just means one horn. So, that's a unicorn.
in fairness, I can't really do any better than that guy,
Can't wait to die and find out God is real, and that she's a unicorn.
The gods are Klimagai, H'iachwit, Gondhiwulg and Raiqnifurd. The last time they were worshipped was in 17655 BC and they're now mad af at humans for forgetting them.
I'm a theist and I believe in unicorns. I'm one of those "all myths are true" kinda people
and a horse with a stick on its head is so much more mundane and believable than an ethereal being that is perfect in every aspect which is already a contradiction, and chose still to give humanity suffering to test their faith.
Theism doesn't mean believing in a perfect being. Most of the Greek gods were pieces of shit. Dionysus is the best by virtue of being an anarchist some of the time
