Sucking at something is the first step to getting kind of good at it too

A good attitude to have, really.

[-] CoolYori@hexbear.net 13 points 1 year ago

That is why I like hobbies where it does not matter if you suck or its all subjective to the point where who defines what sucks is nebulous at best.

Are you talking about the consumption based ones? Like film, books, collectables, etc.

[-] CoolYori@hexbear.net 4 points 1 year ago

I am sorry if I dont understand, but what do you mean by consumption based? I know you included some examples but I dont understand how they relate.

Oh like these are the only hobbies I can think of where it doesn't matter if you suck at it or not because it's so subjective

Are there any others?

[-] CoolYori@hexbear.net 11 points 1 year ago

Oh for sure! Like bird watching is a good one along with other outdoors type stuff. When I think about it nature has a lot of hobbies that are easy to enjoy without the need for competition. Stargazing is kind of hard these days with light pollution affecting a lot of people but I use to like doing it as a kid. I sometimes think tho that my definition for hobby is more of a gut feeling than a literal definition.

Its better to suck than be really good and progress quickly then hit a skill cieling and get really bored. I had this issue with archery I progressed too fast and hit the limits of my local club and then quit.

I use a lot of mind power contemplating how I suck balls at every one of my hobbies and how I should be good at something and I think of myself as someone who shies away from challenges, complicated things, and recipes. Should I not?
