That's extremely fucked up if true!

Guess I'll be blowing the dust off my media PC if Google dare to do something so blatantly greedy.

Those ads are probably displayed by google's launcher, you can easily disable it from adb and use any other launcher you like. I personally use FLauncher, I love how simple it is, I don't need anything else

Also for anyone readying this in the future, you can find the android tv launcher app under apps and uninstall it's updates, then in the play store set apps to not autoupdate. This prevents the launcher from updating to its newest version which has the ads play through it.

Found this out while downgrading my sheilds to 8.2.3 and when the launcher app updated I still saw adds.

Here is a well written guide how to downgrade to 8.2.3 that I followed if interested. It's not required but I find it's alot more stable.

Took about 30min on my second sheilds once I figured out the first sheild after 2 hours.

Yup fuck that greedy bastards!

Time to get my Linux PC media server back up and running through out the house.

It real seems like a huge fuck you to the end users, I hope it's just a tiny test case, or fake, because I really liked my Shield.

I've been running a custom launcher since the ~~recommendation~~ paid ads where introduced; maybe I'll avoid these ads too.

I've heard you can flash lineage on there... Media PC in the main room but I've always loved my shield for a spare room control. Would rather risk bricking it by flashing it than dealing with ads.

They can't even do the "poor Google we have a service to run" thing here, this is just greed. I bought the hardware, I don't deserve ads on it too.

Flashing is pretty easy, been doing it on my phones for years, but never saw the point on media players... Until now!

In the next 10yrs Google with force to watch a full screen ad or pay for an incoming call subscription to answer a call!

It's fun because I bought the shield to not use the built in TV crap because they were filled with ads. I'm curious about the play here from Nvidia and google, because why else do people need an extra box if not for that?

If I recall correctly you lose hardware acceleration and some kind of drm support for apps like Netflix.

[-] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 2 points 10 months ago

Yeah, I think for now I'll be going an easier way like FLauncher. However I'm keeping flashing in my back pocket to do more research on if I need it later.

The moment this shit appears on mine I‘m buying an Apple TV.

[-] dabu@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

It will probably happen to Apple TV as well

[-] Cqrd@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 10 months ago

If it was going to happen to Apple TV, it would have by now. Apple isn't stupid, their price is to deliver a premium experience, and they do.

[-] optissima@lemmy.world -2 points 10 months ago

Damn that's crazy because that doesn't reflect their business model at all anymore.

[-] Ankkuli@lemdro.id 1 points 10 months ago

Apple TV with Infuse replaced my Shield Pro with Kodi. Couldn’t be happier with the switch.

[-] aksdb@feddit.de 1 points 10 months ago

If only GeForceNow was available there. And Kodi.

Hopefully the regulation by the EU fixes this, then I am on board.

[-] ptolemy@infosec.pub 3 points 9 months ago

I just bought one of these... Might just stick with my Apple TV.
