The only thing this is going to accomplish is putting the January 6 insurrection terrorist attack back in the news, and it’s gonna further implicate the Republicans. The FBI already has these tapes, and now people are going to be demanding that the FBI release its version of the footage which is the unedited version. This is why you don’t put a no-name back-bencher like Mike Johnson as speaker of the house

[-] ChonkyOwlbear@lemmy.world 43 points 11 months ago

It would be a great Dark Brandon moment for Biden to release the uncensored footage.

[-] Szymon@lemmy.ca 12 points 11 months ago

All he has to do is threaten it and they'll fall in line.

[-] jonne@infosec.pub 13 points 11 months ago

It's not going to do a lot to protect suspects anyway. There's so much other media created by the mob themselves that you should be able to easily cross reference.

[-] WaxedWookie@lemmy.world 137 points 11 months ago

What happened to "nothing to fear, nothing to hide"?

[-] Dantpool@lemmy.world 50 points 11 months ago

Rules for thee, not for me. It's their SOP; If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear, but respect my privacy.

[-] ElBarto@sh.itjust.works 30 points 11 months ago

That only works if you got nothing to hide.

[-] FanciestPants@lemmy.world 25 points 11 months ago

The party of law and order can't let their voters be encumbered by the law when creating disorder.

[-] gregorum@lemm.ee 80 points 11 months ago

wanton obstruction of justice has me "deeply troubled", too

[-] Decoy321@lemmy.world 37 points 11 months ago

They're not actually obstructing justice, since the feds have had this footage since day 1. They're blurring the photos so the public can't ID them. The idea is to prevent citizens from taking matters into their own hands.

Which is clearly somehow different from what the insurrectionists did.

[-] YtA4QCam2A9j7EfTgHrH@infosec.pub 30 points 11 months ago

Are we sure that they aren’t doing it so people don’t ID the insurrectionists and force the feds to prosecute?

[-] Zitronensaft@feddit.de 18 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Speaker Johnson explicitly said the blurring is so the DoJ isn’t “weaponized” against these people. It is precisely to prevent further prosecutions by making it harder to identify people in newly released footage, they aren’t even trying to pretend otherwise.

[-] gregorum@lemm.ee 14 points 11 months ago

i mean... I'm sure that's why they're doing it...

[-] Zoboomafoo@lemmy.world 23 points 11 months ago

Yeah, the difference is that the "taking matters into their own hands" has been traitors being reported to the FBI, not an angry mob calling for blood.

But you knew that already

[-] Decoy321@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago

I did, unfortunately. What a freaking mess this is.

[-] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago

Gaslight Obstruct <— You Are Here Project

[-] athos77@kbin.social 45 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

If they're all just peaceful tourists, why do they need their faces blurred?

Also, lol at the idea that DoJ can't get access to those tapes, some of which came from DoJ in the first place. Performative bullshit, as always.

[-] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 33 points 11 months ago

Honestly, this is probably just theatre. The federal cops have almost certainly seen this footage.

Also, we already saw most of the worst crimes on national TV.

[-] Decoy321@lemmy.world 46 points 11 months ago

The DOJ had the footage since day 1. The GOP is blurring to protect these traitors from the public. Meanwhile, pretty crime suspects still get their faces plastered on local news.

Rules for thee...

[-] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

Although, to be fair, a lot of these assholes were all over national TV. Sure, some folks probably flew under the radar, but the worst offenders are pretty well documented.

IMHO, this is just the GOP trying to fire up its base by telling the base that they’re persecuted victims. It’s all for show, and getting angry about it only feeds into the narrative.

[-] Decoy321@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago

I completely agree with you. It's them letting their base know that they've "got their backs"

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago

This will block the Sedition Hunters, so yeah, not a good thing.

[-] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

The public has been identifying these traitors and then giving their names to the DOJ. The public uses the J6 footage to ID the traitors. That's why blurring the faces is harmful to prosecuting these traitors. The DOJ needs the public's help to identify them.

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

To distract from the budget.

[-] MamLaLiq@lemmy.world 29 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Ashli Babbitts Mom looks like that religious woman in The Mist. She could be dangerous: Mother Grieving Daughter, it will distract some voters that Daughter conspired and tried to attempt a fucking coup~~~~e~~~~.

[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 12 points 11 months ago

Coup. She didn't attempt to assemble a two door variety of automobile.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 4 points 11 months ago

It did involve some double doors, but she was trying to disassemble them when she was shot instead.

[-] MamLaLiq@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

I'm not very familiair with war-lingo.

Yet.

Fixed it, thank you.

[-] Pratai@lemmy.ca 29 points 11 months ago

Everything conservatives do should have anyone capable of free though ‘deeply troubled.’

[-] Sanctus@lemmy.world 28 points 11 months ago

Don't be bashful, stand up. Claim your prize.

[-] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 13 points 11 months ago

Just a question, but as most of this footage was aired live Jan 6, would someone not already have the un-blured footage? Someone should start sharing that footage anyway. Why even play these games?

[-] Rapidcreek@reddthat.com 18 points 11 months ago

Of course the FBI has it. But, there is a whole lot more than what was on TV. Lots of cameras on the Hill.

[-] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 4 points 11 months ago

But so much was on television from those cameras, the station got that footage somehow. The people that have access to the footage (in part or whole) should put it forward. I don't think this is a good idea to try to protect the identity of insurrectionists from the country unless they are charging all involved. Now you will once again make it a red vs blue issues where everything is grey and angry.

[-] Rapidcreek@reddthat.com 7 points 11 months ago

No there is a whole lot more, but as I said the FBI has it all so nobody filmed is protected from anything.

[-] M0oP0o@mander.xyz -1 points 11 months ago

Well someone is being protected from the public, its not like the FBI has been terribly effective so far in this matter.

[-] Rapidcreek@reddthat.com 8 points 11 months ago

What are you talking about? Theyve made over 500 arrests and have won every case they've brought to court.

This is the GOP trying to walk back Trumps failure to pardon and protect his gaggles of morons. They are now entirely the GQP maga party

[-] catfish@programming.dev 10 points 11 months ago

those three harpies are fucken revolting

[-] firewyre@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Guess I'll have to release all the video I archived from these dumb fucks that were there huh

[-] Doorbook@lemmy.world -1 points 11 months ago

Going after mislead people while Trump and senator who were directly involved is still free is fucked up in my opinion.

[-] Asafum@feddit.nl 1 points 11 months ago

That's how fucked our judicial system is, be wealthy and connected and unless you commit the ultimate sin of messing with other rich peoples money you're off with a stern warning. Be a typical Joe and do 1/100000th of what Trump has done and you're arrested and thrown in prison faster than you can say "grab em by the pussy."

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 11 months ago

The one thing in which I take solace when thinking about politics is how terrible a life they endure. Imagine being scared and angry all the time. At least their hateful views poison their own existence in a way that gives some small amount of justice.

[-] preludeofme@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Isn't that considered aiding and abetting

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Hm, "law and order".

LOL!

[-] Coreidan@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

They have to. Otherwise who will vote for them?
