In search for free domain I got IPQuick. It gives a random domain for any IP4&6. I know not reliable for commercial use but I just want a domain for nextcloud, fediverse and mail.

Questions 1.Is not IP keeps changing in short time will I need to Keep generating domains? 2.Any one using it?

Just pay the few dollars per year and have a stable and reputable domain.
Certainly for fediverse i'd want a stable domain, these are usually hard to migrate.

Why not just pay $2/yr for a domain on Name Cheap? They have a dynamic DNS solution.

Because I am school student (16yr) from INDIA. Here u have to give record of each penny to parents and If say them that I just want a domain for self hosting my personal stuff I will not be able to say something else.

I was where you are too and 2$/month or even per year seemed crazy to me if I could get it for free

If you're at home and want to point to your home IP, but it constantly changes, the easiest is Dynamic DNS.

You can find more.

If you have a stable IP, there also free top level domains .TK / .ML / .GA / .CF / .GQ over at https://www.freenom.com/ . Their frontend is down sometimes, but once you have a domain and are point it to an IP, you should be dandy.

Good luck :)

I like duckdns for DDNS

It's completely free.

Can you make the domain somehow personalized to you so you can say its for an online resume to further your education and employability? If you happen to host other personal stuff that won't cost you anything extra, just make sure you have a fancy looking CV at the root.

Be careful OP that after first year you have to pay the 'renew' price, which is generally higher than 'register' price. A lot of cheap domain offers use that trick expecting users to become attached to their domains.

[-] Kit@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 9 months ago

My domain has been consistently $2 for four years now.

[-] rar@discuss.online 2 points 9 months ago

Info please? All I've seen were offers around ~10 usd minimum for renewal.

[-] Kit@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 9 months ago

I don't do anything special, I just have a really stupid domain name that no one else would want. I don't use autopay so maybe that helps.

[-] xhenon@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Which provider are you using to have the domain so cheap?

Had really good experience with this option. Namecheap seems quite reasonable. Also, self hosting on other's domain can cause a lot of issues as you try creating enough paths for everything. I have found subdomain routing to work much better as a lot of applications get sad when their host url is something like blarg.com/gitea or something.

  1. Assuming that you mean that you are using the domain name to point to services which are at a residential, dynamic IP address, you will need to set up a Dynamic DNS service.

  2. If a product is free, you're the product.

[-] tapdattl@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

While I normally agree on #2, it doesnt really apply to Tailscale. Tailscale isn't completely free, they have a free tier to generate business but it's limited to 3 users per tailnet. Also its cryptographically impossible for them to snoop on your traffic.

[-] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 2 points 9 months ago

I was referring to OP's use of IPQuick. This isn't a service I'm familiar with and it doesn't seem to be affiliated with any organization that I'm familiar with either.

  1. I would assume you'd need to keep updating the DNS record to match the IP you have.
  2. I'm not. Nothing like that is completely free. I wonder how they pay for the DNS...

I recommend duckdns instead, which is more well known in the DIY community. It's also a dyndns like other told you to use.

HTTP Hypertext Transfer Protocol, the Web
HTTPS HTTP over SSL
IP Internet Protocol
NAT Network Address Translation
SSL Secure Sockets Layer, for transparent encryption

VPS Virtual Private Server (opposed to shared hosting)

10 acronyms in this thread; the most compressed thread commented on today has 7 acronyms.

I think you can get a free subdomain and dynamic DNS service at https://desec.io, with this you should be able to keep the domain updated with your IP and point it at your home server. But you need to have a public IP from your ISP and not to be behind NAT.

Anither option is to use a Tailscale Funnel. You will have to use a .ts.net subdomain with them and they terminate TLS and re-encrypt for you. On the other hand it's completely free, you get NAT traversal, an encrypted tunnel, and you don't have to maintain the IP even if it's dynamic.

  1. Check out afraid.org and learn how to set up DDNS.
  2. I've been using afraid.org for a long time with no issues. I don't know IPQuick.
  3. Real domains can be REALLY cheap if you don't need something fancy. Just go to https://tld-list.com/ and sort for "cheapest renewal".
[-] Boofdev@lemmy.world 5 points 9 months ago

You can also get a free domain at eu.org

[-] TCB13@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

Okay that's interesting.

[-] Engywuck@lemm.ee 1 points 9 months ago

True, I forgot about that.

[-] TCB13@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

afraid.org +1

For most use cases you can host everything on I2P.

  • You can create unlimited domains for free
  • Its censorship resistant There are some caveats though:
  • The network is rather slow (but not too slow in my opinion)
  • You need to configure your router or you device to access the I2P net
