Of course there's a factor of tribal instincts that can be explored like this, but it seems to me their root question "why conservatives distrust science" may have the causality the wrong way around - what about asking why people who didn't learn to trust science are more likely to become conservative, rather than assuming the people start in categories, as if born with political orientation.
