Thread image created by yours truly, depicting Iran and Pakistan very impolitely not asking whether America, on the other side of the planet, is okay with them transporting gas around.

The Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline has long been obstructed by American involvement in the region. Iran completed its section of the pipeline quite quickly, but Pakistan has been unable to finish its construction for a decade due to the fear of falling afoul of American sanctions on Iran. The United States has repeatedly tried to pressure Pakistan to give up the project and obtain gas from other countries instead. Recent articles on the state of the pipeline are contradictory, with some stating that Iran or Pakistan have given up on the pipeline while American sanctions persist. Pakistani officials reject this framing, saying that they are still working with Iran to try and get the project completed somehow. Nonetheless, Iran is becoming increasingly frustrated and is threatening a legal battle and a demand for reparations.

Meanwhile, back in Niger, the $13 billion under-construction pipeline connecting Nigeria and other West African countries to Spain and Italy will likely face delays due to the sanctions applied by the West and ECOWAS on Niger. Those following the European gas fiasco will be aware that while Spain and Italy have been impacted by the energy crisis, they have been very busy making deals with African countries to replace their Russian gas, and thus stand a better chance than Germany of making it through the crisis with their industries somewhat intact. The coup has thrown a wrench into their plans, though they can still obtain some gas from northern African countries.

And, last but not least, America tried for years to stop the construction of the Nord Stream pipelines between Germany and Russia, which culminated in them deciding to blow them up late last year.

All in all - the United States really does not like it when countries build up energy infrastructure and gain some independence from them.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

You all have learned the sad news about Luna-25, I will just post this one here:

One of the scientific directors of space research in the USSR, Academician Mikhail Marov, ended up in the Central Clinical Hospital (TsKB), having learned about the crash of the Luna-25 apparatus, the scientist himself told RBC.

“I am under surveillance. How can I not worry, this is largely a matter of life. It's all very hard. But, nothing, I hope that we can manage, that the leadership of Roscosmos will have a desire, even a conscious need to repeat this experiment, ”said Marov.

The scientist also told MK about his condition. “It’s sad that we didn’t manage to land the device. For me, this was perhaps the last hope to see the revival of our lunar program,” Marov said.

Marov is 90 years old. This is one of the last scientists who was personally acquainted with the three founders of the nuclear missile shield of the USSR - Korolev, Kurchatov and Keldysh. He was the scientific director of the Venus exploration program, participated in the Soviet lunar and Martian programs.

Apparently the Luna-25 mission is comprised of mostly young specialists who are having their first go at space mission. Makes sense after 47 years, and good that they are handing the opportunity to the younger generations. The next attempts, Luna-26 and Luna-27 are scheduled for 2027 and 2028, and in the meantime, the Japanese, Chinese, Americans and Israelis will have their planned missions to moon.

Now it’s up to the Indians to land on the 23rd, good luck!

Japan, US to develop missile to intercept hypersonic weapons

The two governments will likely reach an agreement at a Japan-U.S. summit meeting slated for Friday, several government officials said.

The two countries will aim to strengthen deterrence by preparing for threats that are difficult to deal with using existing missile defense networks.

This is the second time Tokyo and Washington will jointly develop interceptor missiles since they worked on the SM-3 Block IIA in fiscal 2017.

Arrangements are currently being made for separate bilateral talks in which Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and U.S. President Joe Biden will discuss the joint development and announce it as part of an agreement, on the sidelines of the Japan-U.S.-South Korea summit meeting scheduled for Friday in the suburbs of Washington.

Why do you need this if the Patriot can already do it?

also @Alaskaball@hexbear.net, what do you mean by a megathread review play-by-play megathread? like we go through the 52 megathreads that year and sort them into chad vs virgin or something?

also worth noting that our three top news megas are, in order, the very first one that @Alaskaball@hexbear.net hosted at the start of the war to contain the initial shitstorm of "god damn it this fucking sucks" at 2023 comments, the Wagner munity news mega at 1606 comments, and the news mega when Russia started its missile bombardments of Ukraine in October with 1345 comments. so the technical record to beat is 2023

Another day another western pile of trash on the news, original Slavyangrad

German shitpaper saying Ukraine needs to mobilize 3 million soldiers and the only way to win is a "war of attrition".

Google Translated

So there is only one way forward: to wage the war seriously, as befits a national liberation struggle. Ukraine's population, while declining, is still over 30 million, so the total number of armed forces could be as high as 3 million. 10 percent, that would be the percentage of mobilization that Israel brought up in 1947/48. And if it were only 5 percent, as Finland can muster at the current level, it would still be a million and a half soldiers. With such a force of troops, Ukraine could win its battles and liberate its territory the old-fashioned way: in a war of attrition, like most European wars of independence.

To the last Ukrainian we say again, unironicaly.

But even if this is unremarkable old news I think just this alone is worth mentioning Its right there in the fucking middle of the photo, right at the top, under the headline.

And some lib will still try to argue about Nazis in Ukraine holy shit. For the benefit any dear lurkers out there, The Nazi Black Sun

Mali's president engages Putin on phone about Niger coup

In a message shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Goita stated that Putin emphasized the significance of a peaceful resolution to ensure stability in the Sahel region.

Western nations are apprehensive that Niger might follow the path of Mali, where a previous coup led to the involvement of Russian Wagner group mercenaries in counter-insurgency efforts.

Putin has urged the restoration of constitutional order in Niger. On the other hand, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner group, expressed support for the coup. Interestingly, there has been a notable surge in pro-Russian sentiment in Niger since the coup, evident in rallies where junta supporters waved Russian flags.

Latvian PM Karins Announces Resignation

He would hand in his resignation to President Edgars Rinkevics on Thursday. Karins would not seek reappointment as prime minister.

On Monday, Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins announced that he would resign amid differences with coalition partners.

Karins, who is the leader of the center-right New Unity, blamed the centrist United List and conservative National Alliance for thwarting attempts to improve the government's performance.

"A new government is needed," Karins said, adding that he would hand in his resignation to President Edgars Rinkevics on Thursday. He also mentioned that he would not seek reappointment as prime minister.

The move comes as a U-turn after his announcement last week that he will start consultations on forming a new cabinet with two opposition parties -- the center-left Progressives and centrist Greens and Farmers.

Earlier, New Unity's existing current partners did not agree to a government reshuffle within the coalition. New Unity plans to name its prime minister candidate on Wednesday.

Karins, a former economy minister and member of European Parliament, became prime minister in 2019 as a compromise candidate heading a five-party coalition in which New Unity was the smallest member.

After New Unity won the parliamentary election last year, Karins managed to form a three-party government with a slim majority. But the new coalition was marred by disagreements.

Slavyangrad is reporting on shock therapy in the Ukraine:

The bottom of the barrel continues to be scrapped in Ukraine.

Ukraine will cancel any social benefits for those who were abroad for more than 30 days. A strange rationale for a government that goes on air everyday claiming their country is being destroyed.

You will also lose benefits if you have a car newer than 5 years, more than around 2500 Euro as assets, or have your own house. You are too rich to need help if you have that in Ukraine, apparently.

They are also looking into how to deprive more people of their paltry unemployment benefits: a maximum of 170 euro for three months.

This obviously will encourage those who manage to escape from the giant concentration camp Ukraine became to not return, aggravating their demographic crisis. But the Ukrainian state continues to evade all its responsibilities towards their citizens with the war as an excuse.

West Africa Activates Reserve Force to Invade Niger

The possible actions have divided the region, with the governments of Nigeria, Benin, Ivory Coast and Senegal clearly confirming the readiness of their armies to invade the Nigerian territory.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) announced on August 16 that it activated a "reserve force" for "the restoration of constitutional order" in Niger, a country that experienced a coup d'état last July.

The organization, which brings together 15 West African states, said on social networks that the formation of this rapid reaction unit is a follow-up to what was agreed at the summit of heads of state and government held last August 10 in Abuja, Nigeria.

"The activation of the ECOWAS Standby Force for the restoration of constitutional order in the Republic of Niger has begun," reads a message from the bloc.

The activation of the reserve force was mandated by the Ecowas Defence Chiefs of Staff Committee, which will hold an extraordinary meeting in Accra, Ghana, from 17 to 18 August, to finalize plans for the deployment of these units in Niger.

On August 10, the ECOWAS instructed the chiefs of staff of its members to immediately activate the military reserve forces to deploy it in Niger as a last resort if the military chiefs do not give in to their demands, according to the president of the organization, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

On August 6, the seven-day ultimatum that ECOWAS gave to the Nigerien military to return power to President Mohamed Bazoum, deposed on July 26, expired; otherwise, it threatened to carry out an armed intervention in the country.

West African leaders also suspended financial aid to Niger, closed the borders, cancelled commercial transactions with the country, imposed a travel ban and froze the assets of the rebel military, their families and all those who agree to "participate in the institutions" set up by the coup plotters.

ECOWAS brings together Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo. However, both Mali and Burkina Faso have said they support non-intervention in Niger.

Numerous countries and international organizations strongly condemned the military coup in Niger, suspended their cooperation programs with the African country and demanded the restoration of constitutional order.

The possible actions have divided the region, with the governments of Nigeria, Benin, Ivory Coast and Senegal clearly confirming the readiness of their armies to invade the Nigerian territory.

Ukraine's Advances Likely Show 'Wider Degradation' of Russian Forces: ISW

Mmm what have we here? A U-cope article who's title makes it seem like the Ukrainian offensive is making significant gains, yet with the barest amount of effort spent reading and looking up where those gains are reveal thr objectively pathetic territorial gains the Ukrainian armed forces have made these past few months.

To try and rally any sort of sense of victory from the ashes of thousands of dead Ukrainians sent to die pointless deaths, the propagandist spin-doctors from the Kiev compostables have cast the illusions of mountains out of hillocks by amplifying a regional militia battalion commander complaints about how militias tend to be on the low end of the totem pole in receiving support as a sign of the whole Russian defensive line is simply one mechanized blitzkrieg away from collapsing. Coincidentally speaking of blitzkriegs, their choice of picture for the ukro-nazis is funny enough on the milder end of nazi shit but still has the tell-tale sign of the wehrmacht iron cross spray painted on the top of the turret hatch of the tin can they're driving.
