After years of challenge in the courts, both parents were absolved of the crime, and a coroner found Azaria's death was, in fact, the result of being eaten by a dingo.

How fucking awful. Your baby gets eaten by a wild animal, you get charged with murder, and then your trauma becomes an international joke for years.

Similar with the woman who spilled McDonald's coffee on her lap and sued. International joke because of McDonald's smear campaign, but it turned out their coffee was legitimately served too hot to cut costs.

[-] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 12 points 10 months ago

The spilled coffee soaked through her clothes while she was sitting buckled in her car seatbelt and the coffee was so hot that her skin melted and her labia fused together 😱

[-] ohlaph@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

She originally just asked them to pay for the medical expenses too. McDonald's refused and ended up paying much more in legal expenses and what was awarded to the lady.

That's the nature of many tragedies I'm afraid. Monty Python and The Holy Grail comes to mind where I recall it opening to the bubonic plague of people being thrown onto a cart with someone screaming "Bring out yer dead!" and the joke is someone tries to 'bring out' someone that's still alive, insisting they'll be dead soon.

I don't think anyone really ascribes malice to the jokes, it's just a way to cope through dark history.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago

The bubonic plague was a little further back in history.

[-] RealFknNito@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

If you want something more recent, I think something happened in 2001 but I can't quite remember.

[-] hypnotoad__@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 months ago

Some sort of fraction, i think the denominator was 11

[-] m12421k@iusearchlinux.fyi 1 points 10 months ago

It was a global tragedy. I know a guy who had to walk through blood and bones looking for his brother.

[-] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 19 points 10 months ago

I first heard it on Seinfeld. It's amazing that it was used so much in pop-culture.

[-] itsgroundhogdayagain@lemmy.ml 8 points 10 months ago

There's a movie with Sam Neil about this story. We had to watch it in high school, before the Seinfeld episode came out, and we all just about died with the mom yelling about the dingo eating her baby. it wasn't supposed to be funny but it absolutely was.

[-] ArtieShaw@kbin.social 5 points 10 months ago

It's one of those things where it was awful (and I always believed she was telling the truth), but it was also absurd and you really couldn't help laughing and then feeling awful about it immediately.

And with Elaine it was just played so perfectly to her character. "Maybe a dingo ate your baby." "Whaaat?"

"I said: Maybe... A Dingo... Ate... Your Baby." Followed by a self-satisfied nod to acknowledge her zinger. She so clearly thought she had just won a dance contest and everyone else in the room was just WTF.

Sorry for the recap, but it was such a great Elaine moment. Beautiful, well educated, but sometimes just an unhinged sociopath.

[-] walden@sub.wetshaving.social 6 points 10 months ago

I never knew there was an actual story behind the Seinfeld scene.

[-] Murdoc@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 months ago

I just knew of the band from Buffy.

[-] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

every time I think of this story I picture Elaine saying it. "A dingo ate my baby!!"

You know that's a true story? Lady lost a kid. You're about to cross some fuckin' lines.

[-] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 7 points 10 months ago

[-] Dirk_Darkly@sh.itjust.works 6 points 10 months ago

Is one of them the one the dingo crossed when it ate that baby?

[-] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Is this a line from Letterkenny? Because it sounds like a line from Letterkenny. They'd all end up doing really bad Australian accents.

Dan - I understands shes actins like shes fightin' fer her lives, but I still thinks Meryls ates more scenery than any dingos could.

Katy - Meryl is beloved BECAUSE she's like a dingo. You don't get to be that beloved as a woman of age in Hollywood without eating the occasional metaphorical baby.

Dary - I just think she could have gone about it a little better. It's like "did a dingo eat your manners?".

Wayne - Come on now, a lady lost her kid. You're about to cross some fuckin' lines.

Rahld - Ster't!!

Why do the dingoes get a bigger enclosure?

[-] 21Cabbage@lemmynsfw.com 4 points 10 months ago

Funny enough dingos are descendants of domestic dogs, which is itself a touch weird, but also the heelers (aka Australian cattle dogs) are descendants of them. My boy is a heeler/lab mix which I think is maximum silly.

[-] thecrotch@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 months ago

I've got a Chihuahua/heeler

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 months ago

Ive got two Australian cattle dogs. One is a very sweat girl, the other is a fucking crazy but tries his best to be a good boy.

Hello fellow Far Side fans!

About this community and how I post the comic strip… Many moons ago, I would ask my Dad to save the newspaper for me everyday so I could read my favorite comic strips and one of those was The Far Side. These days of course you find just about anything online including www.thefarside.com where they post several comics a day and I repost them here. Just to note, the date you see in my posts is not the initial release date, but the date they were posted on the website.

The Far Side is a single-panel comic created by Gary Larson and syndicated by Chronicle Features and then Universal Press Syndicate, which ran from December 31, 1979, to January 1, 1995 (when Larson retired as a cartoonist). Its surrealistic humor is often based on uncomfortable social situations, improbable events, an anthropomorphic view of the world, logical fallacies, impending bizarre disasters, (often twisted) references to proverbs, or the search for meaning in life… Read more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Far_Side

Hope you enjoy and feel free to contribute to the community with art, cool stuff about the author, tattoos, toys and anything else, as long it’s The Far Side!
