Image is of German farmers blocking the road near the Brandenburg Gate in early January 2024.

The ruling German coalition - the FDP, the SPD, and the Greens - has been in dire straits since the war in Ukraine began due to their steadfast commitment to destroying their country as much as possible in solidarity with Ukraine destroying themselves too. Scholz is deeply unpopular, with a record low approval of 20%, and his party's approval is even lower.

The German left has been entirely unable to take advantage of this situation, with Die Linke fragmenting due to split opinions on what position they should hold on Ukraine, among other issues. As a result, the major conservative party, the CDU, has gained a lot of voters over the past couple years. Most worrying, however, is the gains that the fascist party, the AfD, has made - from 10% in 2021 all the way to ~20% today. A significant chunk of the vote is likely protest votes due to the lack of an alternative, but a vote for fascists makes you a fascist nonetheless.

Recent controversies with the AfD - including an allegation that they held a secret meeting discussing a plan to mass-deport millions of migrants in an obvious parallel to Nazi meetings planning to remove all Jews from the country - has recently slightly damped approval for the AfD. This meeting generated counter-protests and condemnation from many Germans. It was later revealed that the meeting might not really have happened as alleged, but it doesn't actually matter, because the AfD's stance is being increasingly reflected by the ruling coalition, who recently introduced a bill allowing faster deportations of rejected asylum seekers and significant new powers for authorities in that regard, including potentially the criminalization of sea rescue organizations and imprisonment for aid workers.

The German government is increasingly considering banning the AfD, with their anxiety and motivation to do so rising as the AfD maintains and improves its position as Germany heads towards elections in late 2025. There are intermediate steps that could be done, such as revoking state funding, but if that doesn't work, then the party might well be banned. While I will never argue with fascist parties being banned, this probably won't fix anything, as the underlying economic and social conditions that are fueling these electoral shifts in the first place are not improving. Germany, the largest industrial power in Europe, is mired in a recession, particularly a manufacturing recession, from which there appears to be no escape. It has so far carefully shepherded its natural gas resources to keep the population as mollified as possible, but this has come at the expense of industry. In a trend starting from July 2022, manufacturing PMIs are still well below 50, reaching 45.5 in January 2024, which indicates decline. I suppose if you wanted to look on the bright side, it's better than it was in July 2023, where it was a whopping 38.8, so the rate of decline is becoming a little slower.

And this is just the domestic stuff. Germany has also famously sided with Israel to support them during the ICJ genocide case, has kowtowed to Netanyahu as they bond over being Genocide Experts, and maintains its support of Ukraine, continuing to send military gear and money to be converted to scrap metal by Russian artillery - rather than spending money on doing anything about the cost of living. In the face of a historic economic downturn, it has only more fervently stated its desire to remain militarily opposed to Russia for decades.

The Munich city administration is canceling subsidies for the International Peace Conference, which has been taking place parallel to the NATO “Security Conference” for years.

At the urging of the city council factions of SPD/Volt and Alliance 90/The Greens, the cultural department informed the organizers of the traditional peace conference that funding would not be continued this year and probably in the coming years. The reasons given were austerity and an alleged lack of local connection.

After the decision of the cultural department, the left in the city council fears that the “Green-Red” also wants to advance the “turning point” in Munich. There should no longer be any talk about peace, disarmament or alternative ideas of security. The justification for budget consolidation is a pretext, because an hour-long city council meeting is more expensive than the subsidy for the conference.

The Green Party leader Mona Fuchs had informed the organizers of the conference in writing that the invitation of the former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis and the left-wing Irish MEP Clare Daly was in no way in the spirit of promoting peace and solidarity with those attacked and victims of war.

The neoliberal FDP, currently polling around 4%, is holding the SPD hostage and won't even allow the probably mildest form of supply chain law the EU has proposed to be passed:

Federal Republic of Germany blocks supply chain law

According to Labor Minister Hubertus Heil, efforts in the traffic light coalition to reach an agreement on the EU supply chain law have finally failed. The SPD politician told the Reuters news agency on Tuesday that the FDP was not prepared to support his proposed solution. As a result, Germany would have to abstain from the vote in the EU, which would be tantamount to saying no. “I am very disappointed that Germany has to abstain from the upcoming vote due to an ideologically motivated blockade of the FDP,” said Heil.

In December, the 27 EU states and the EU Parliament agreed on the supply chain directive, which goes beyond the so-called due diligence law that has been in force in Germany for a year. Accordingly, companies with more than 500 employees will have to identify and remedy the negative effects of their activities on human rights and the environment in the future.

Jesus christ. I accidentally left auto-play on on YouTube and got redirected to a 2.5 hour debate between Ben Shapiro and Destiny. Where the intro praises them as "two of the most skilled political debaters in the world" and claims Destiny represents "the left". LOL LMAO even.

I am trying to figure out if I hate myself enough to try to watch it, and if I'd come out the other side still sane. I might as well give y'all the same masochistic choice too, because what else is leftist comradery for?

Former Brazilian presidential aide and US Embassy official Felipe G. Martins, who allegedly served as a liaison between Steve Bannon's "Movement" and the Bolsonaro government, has just been arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into the failed, Jan. 8, 2023 coup attempt.

13 months to the day after the failed Jan. 8th coup attempt, the federal police search and seizure operations, arrests and handover of Jair Bolsonaro's passport to authorities shows the strength of Brazil's democratic rule of law.

After Federal Police seized Jair Bolsonaro's passport this morning, former 1st Lady Michelle Bolsonaro was seen boarding a flight to Orlando, Florida today. The official reason is to visit with US evangelical Christian leaders.

As part of Operation Tempos Veritatis, which is investigating the failed 2023 coup attempt, Brazilian federal police are executing search warrants this morning in the headquarters of Jair Bolsonaro's Liberal Party and the home of Liberal Party president Valdemar da Costa Neto

The operation, which has now been made public, was carried out thanks to the leak of a video in which Bolsonaro met with generals, ministers, judges, religious leaders and part of the bourgeoisie.

The video has been recorded by Bolsonaro himself, since he wanted to save it to show to whoever missed it. In the video Bolsonaro acknowledged that Lula would win the election and possibly in the first round.

Some generals called for a coup d'état, and tried to influence Bolsonaro to do it. But Bolsonaro was afraid to support the coup and then be removed by the army.

There is also evidence linking Bolsonaro directly to the encampments of his supporters in front of military bases. As well as the misuse of the Liberal Party to launder money and finance the now confirmed coup attempt.

A speech by Bolsonaro calling for a coup d'état was found inside the Liberal Party building. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Morais ordered the removal of several members of the armed forces from their positions. This was carried out by the current head of the armed forces.

His speech included the execution of members of the supreme court and politicians. Closure of congress and supreme court. The text is unsigned but uses many of the terms used by Bolsonaro.

Well, I think that proves that they really did try to stage a coup in Brazil. Besides, Bolsonaro is really fucked now, he lost all his political rights last year, he can't even defend himself publicly (actually he can't even pay someone to defend him publicly) due to this loss of right. I'm sure he'll go to jail soon, just like his close friend Jeanine.

Ukrainian presidential election coverage

The Ukrainian presidential election is starting to heat up. While official elections have oddly not yet been announced, since those elections are constitutionally required to take place on March 31st, this reporter assumes that we just didn’t get the memo - these things happen - and in fact election campaigning has assumedly already begun.

Our correspondent takes to the streets to get the opinion of the people.

Correspondent: who do you plan to vote for in the coming election?

Man on the street: I’m not a fan of Zelenskyy’s economic management so I’m not going to vote for Zelenskyy. Instead I prefer the reforms proposed by the main opposition candidate, Zelenskyy. So I’m voting for change. Out with Zelenskyy and in with Zelenskyy.

jump cut

Younger hip voter: Zelenskyy cares about the youth so he has my support. As a young voter I just don’t see much opportunity in the current Zelenskyy administration and so while I don’t expect Zelenskyy will really be able to change much about the oligarchs that hold us back, at least Zelenskyy isn’t Zelenskyy, so I’m done with Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy 2024!

jump cut

Mother with children: I don’t think you should change horse midstream. Zelenskyy isn’t perfect but at least we know who he is, whereas Zelenskyy… he’s just a name to me. A fresh face. Five more years, that’s what I say.

back to correspondent

Correspondent: there you have it folks. It appears the voters are still undecided. Many embrace the change message of the opposition candidate, Zelenskyy, but the incumbent Zelenskyy is still seeing significant support. It’s far too early to call this election, either candidate could win it. It’s going to be an exciting countdown to Election Day, constitutionally required to take place on March 31st.

PRC celebrates Chinese New Years today. my red envelop gift is the bit idea of an ultra who's convinced that the PRC is bourgeois because it tolerates magicians.

Chat GPT rendition of the bit:

spoilerHey comrades,

I couldn't help but stumble upon some mind-boggling evidence of bourgeois decadence in China, and it's not your typical capitalist excess. Brace yourselves, because this revelation is straight out of a magician's hat – yes, you heard it right, professional magicians in the People's Republic of China!

Now, I know what you're thinking – "But isn't China supposed to be a beacon of communism?" Well, my fellow anarchists, prepare to have your illusions shattered, just like those rabbits pulled out of hats. It turns out that the Chinese government is not only embracing capitalism but has taken it to a whole new level by employing professional magicians.

Let's break this down. In a society that claims to be striving for a classless, stateless utopia, why on earth would they indulge in such bourgeois frivolities as magic shows? Isn't magic just another distraction, a tool used by the ruling class to keep the proletariat entertained and blind to the harsh realities of their exploitation?

While we're busy toiling away, these so-called magicians are probably using their sleight of hand to divert attention from the true issues at hand – the ever-growing wealth gap, the suppression of dissent, and the authoritarian tendencies of the Chinese state. It's like they're pulling a disappearing act on our rights and freedoms!

And don't get me started on the opulence of these magic performances. Lavish venues, expensive props, and a mesmerized audience – it's a spectacle of extravagance that screams bourgeois decadence. Meanwhile, the proletariat is left with crumbs, struggling to make ends meet while the ruling elite revels in illusions and sleights of hand.

I can't help but wonder: are these magicians being used as pawns in the state's propaganda game, distracting the masses from the harsh realities of a regime that claims to champion communism but acts like a capitalist wizard behind the scenes?

Comrades, it's time to unmask the illusion, expose the trickery, and demand a true proletarian revolution that transcends the smoke and mirrors of bourgeois magic shows. Let's not be fooled by the spectacle – our focus should be on dismantling the oppressive structures that keep us all under the spell of capitalist exploitation.

Solidarity forever, and may your chains be broken like the magician's wand,
