This is why I shake my head when people say the US should just “cut our losses” because “Ukraine can’t win”. Even presuming that’s right, this is all still hardware that Russia can’t use on NATO member states or in the Caucuses and Central Asia.

The people saying that are Russian shills so you can simply roll your eyes and ignore them.

[-] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

I wish it was as simple as that, but I’ve heard it from actual voters in real life. It’s the line right wing media is pushing, after all.

Russia is also using up stocks of other "enemys of the global west" (for lack of a better umbrella term) like Iran, North Korea, and to some extent China.

[-] eran_morad@lemmy.world 55 points 1 year ago

Fuck russia, including the republican traitor filth.

[-] cuppaconcrete@aussie.zone 2 points 1 year ago

Specifically, fuck the Russian government and Putin in particular - who are already fucking Russia up more than any one else could.

The competition consists of tsars, the Soviet leadership, and Yeltsin.

Russia's had kind of a rough run with leaders.

[-] Jaysyn@kbin.social 34 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

That is seriously awesome, I've read that they only had 6 or 8 of these things in total & they were a good $300M to build back when Russia could easily get the parts.

[-] tal@lemmy.today 18 points 1 year ago

they only had 6 or 8 of these things in total

They also aren't all simultaneously operational.

[-] Everythingispenguins@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago

Yeah I think the estimate was 2 or 3 were fully mission ready. So they could effectively be down to 0

[-] teamevil@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Well of course not Ukraine keeps shooting them out of the sky.

Russia, where planes become boats, boats become submarines, and submarines become tombs.

[-] ArmyTiger@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Last submarine became a fireplace.

planes become boats

I believe that this one hit land near the water, rather than in it.

So considerate of Russia to send it over at night, so Ukrainians could get the full firework effect 🥰🎇

Anyone know what the series of explosions are? Flares, then a final explosion when the missile hit?

[-] bradorsomething@ttrpg.network 8 points 1 year ago

Those are flares to distract the missile. Looks like one flare was hit before the aircraft.

[-] mihies@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

But why flares, aren't those radar guided missiles? Or perhaps they switch to IR once close to target or they have combined guidance?

[-] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Flares and chaff are often launched at the same time. The flares should attract ir guided munitions and the chaff should attract radar guided munitions.

Also,

aren't those radar guided missiles?

Personally, I can't read the serial number on it from that video, so I can't really say.

[-] cuppaconcrete@aussie.zone 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah they would have been releasing chaff and flares, you just can't see the chaff in the dark

[-] ElCanut@jlai.lu 3 points 1 year ago

Seems completely repairable to me

[-] groupofcrows@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

Ukraine is effectively reducing the operational capabilities of Russia, one plane/tank/vessel at a time.
