"the ballot initiative would violate the city’s Human Rights Act because it would discriminate against Black and low-income voters who could be confused by ranked choice voting."
It sounds pretty discriminatory saying that they’re too dumb to list the candidates they want in order. It’s not a difficult premise.
They've used it all over the country for years. Minnesota and Alaska that I know of, probably other places.
I wish it was all of Minnesota, looks to be just a few cities.
Yep, liberals have a way of saying super racist stuff without actually saying the n-word directly.
But they are absolutely screaming it in the heads and behind closed doors
Dessalines shouldn't have stopped at Port Au Prince.
.... Thats racist as shit.
These scum really trying to pretend that anyone who didn't graduate from an ivy has never made a list of anything in order of preference before
WheeEw boi. They really put that in writing?
Once again, Republicans fear their voters, Democrats despise their voters
The democrats love the two party system. They don't care that each election cycle is a game of chicken with a literal fascist party, so long as they don't need to deliver on real economic reforms for the people in order to win reelection.
A lot of people new to the concept of paying attention are shocked by that
Gotta remember the millions of people who will be able to vote for the first time next year were like 10 when the first Bernie ratfucking happened and 14 when the second Bernie ratfucking happened
Please stop, don’t give me this information, not now
Edit: but I do really feel bad for kids. i think as bad as things are, at least I sort of got to witness the lead up to 2016, gamergate, and of course the growth of social media, so as crazy as things are right now I at least have a context for understanding. I can’t imagine what it would be like for a high schooler/middle schooler growing up today with no context for the absolute insanity of American politics currently.

Both parties are the literal fascist party
This is really anti-democratic. RCV would open them to competition from other parties
Anything resembling small d democracy challenges their power. Ranked choice is probably the worst for them since it means voters don't have to "vote blue no matter who" or risk splitting the vote. It's a huge blow to "choose our evil because it's lessor" politics.
These are the same jackasses that tell everyone to learn to code.
I made a small edit. So close yet so far away...
~~DC~~ Dems don’t want voters to interfere with their machine
Precisely. DC Dems are all Federal Dems. It's asinine to try to qualify their location as being DC only. It's almost like the news corporations think we're dumb enough to fall for that.
Arlington County Board decided not to use ranked choice voting for November’s general election over concerns that some Black and Latino voters had been confused about how to vote and how votes would ultimately be counted
Those dumb Mexicans are too stoopid to read the instructions!

maybe we can talk about this when a fascist isn't running
There is a CHEETO trying to get back into the WHITE HOUSE
😔
I agree with opposing open primaries. It encourages voters for the incumbents party to vote in the oppositions primary, which can mean Republican voting for the conservative Democrat and swaying the election.
RCV is good, though.

Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
