Fuck Nintendo and the Disney Adults who defend them online.

[-] Des@hexbear.net 33 points 8 months ago

perfect description of the vibe i got from those Nintendo diehards

wonder if there's any crossover between those two groups?

[-] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 10 points 8 months ago

Absolutely is

[-] dkr567@hexbear.net 10 points 8 months ago

I would think the crossover is more or less a circle.

[-] Cromalin@hexbear.net 8 points 8 months ago

nah, there's a lot but it's not a 1:1 thing. there are plenty who are obsessed with one but not the other

[-] Tankiedesantski@hexbear.net 4 points 8 months ago

I hope Nintendo's next console flops so hard that it makes the Virtua Boy and Wii U look successful.

[-] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 44 points 8 months ago

yuzu ea 4176 and citra nightly 2104, if anyone else wants them. Ryujinx is another good one to download now.

[-] git@hexbear.net 44 points 8 months ago

Citra will get forked and picked up by non-Yuzu devs.

Yuzu team were clowns for stealing code from Ryujinx, incorporating in the USA, trying to launch a paid alternative to Nintendo Online for Yuzu, and hosting a Google Drive full of Switch ROMs for "testing" in their Discord. They were playing with napalm.

If the user providing keys is a DMCA issue for Nintendo emulators, then ROMs will be uploaded as decrypted going forward.

[-] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 34 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

The Google drive is the most insane part to me. Just so reckless, for so little potential upside. Why would you even allow talk like that, let alone participate.

Edit: apparently they actually were linking right to a gdrive with the switch's OS and games (I thought this was just talking about it, not providing it). Fucking idiots.

[-] sovietknuckles@hexbear.net 36 points 8 months ago

This is my personal fifteen 9/11s

[-] normalmente@hexbear.net 19 points 8 months ago

Sir they've taken down the second nintendo emulator.

[-] sovietknuckles@hexbear.net 14 points 8 months ago

second-plane Secure the backups

[-] beef_curds@hexbear.net 33 points 8 months ago

I don't really get what's happening. Why now and not 10 years ago?

Previously people would say it wasn't pursued before because emulation itself is just reverse engineering, which is legal.

[-] Cromalin@hexbear.net 42 points 8 months ago

i think it's because the next console is coming out next year and they want to discourage anyone from trying to crack it

they didn't win a court case, nintendo just threatened to sue and settled on the condition that yuzu (and citra through yuzu) be shut down and pay like 2 million dollars. if nintendo thought they could win they wouldn't have settled, they would have pushed through and won and permanently rendered emulators illegal. but they couldn't do that, so they'll just try and scare everyone off from doing anythign

[-] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 38 points 8 months ago

Also the speculation is that the Switch 2 is basically just an upgraded Switch, so the thought is that with very little effort emulators like Yuzu would be able to play Switch 2 games. Nintendo wants to shut it down ahead of that happening to try to prevent the Switch 2 architecture from being cracked for as long as possible.

That said with Yuzu being open source, Nintendo won't win that fight in the long term. But it will probably delay the Switch 2 emulator development by quite a bit which their bean counters assume is a win.

[-] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 15 points 8 months ago

This would have been incredible.

[-] zifnab25@hexbear.net 14 points 8 months ago

Definitely someone with a spreadsheet out there who can tell you how much money they'll hypothetically make based on the spread between emulators existing and not existing.

Although, I won't lie, I tried out Yuzu for a few months and mostly just got frustrated with all the hoops I had to jump through to make it work. Ended up buying a Switch just to get a seamless play experience (which, in hindsight, I guess I regret?) I have to wonder how much business they're going to ultimately lose because someone emulated the PS5, got frustrated, and ran off to buy that console instead.

I'm the opposite. I have a switch and I'm trying to get emulators working so that Pokemon Scarlet and Xenoblade 3 don't run like dogshit.

[-] beef_curds@hexbear.net 24 points 8 months ago

Makes sense, I guess. Fuck Nintendo.

They're both open source projects. So it will be interesting how much time they'll spend playing whackamole. Either way, it will chill development bc at the very least the main devs will probably not go back. Sad.

Citra going down really hurts because CTGP-7 is such a great project, and I feel like this is going to chill big projects too.

[-] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 19 points 8 months ago

The CTGP-7 devs posted their fork right after posting the news. I don't think this will stop them.

But yes, I also worry about other projects.

[-] beef_curds@hexbear.net 12 points 8 months ago

Hell yeah. Good news. Hoping for 1.5.

[-] Cromalin@hexbear.net 12 points 8 months ago

i doubt they'll spend much time on it, they've done enough damage already. i bet they've already done enough to scare any major projects from developing for long enough that they won't be around for the first months of launch which is probably the main goal (though obviously if they could shut down all emulation they would)

[-] Thordros@hexbear.net 31 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

I'm probably the biggest ~~Disney~~ Nintendo Adult who posts here, and even I think this is stupid as hell. I've got a whole fucking shelf of (3)DS games we paid for, but can't play because our 3DS broke and isn't repairable. Citra let us play them.

Eat my shit and hair, Nintendo.

[-] blakeus12@hexbear.net 19 points 8 months ago

if you have linux HURRY!!!!!!! IT'S STILL AVAILABLE ON FLATHUB!!!!!!!!!

Also afaik if you have it already your install won't be affected.

[-] Thordros@hexbear.net 14 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

I have a little garden that I keep on my backup drive. It contains all the emulation projects that Nintendo killed. And sometimes stole, for profit.

Don't worry about me. I've been archiving Nintendo IP since before most of this site was born.

[-] doublepepperoni@hexbear.net 7 points 8 months ago

What would those be? UltraHLE, Yuzu, and Citra? Genuinely curious if there were more

[-] Comradesexual@lemmygrad.ml 19 points 8 months ago

Never owning a Nintendo and not playing their games is easy. I'd rather not have my hobby risk having someone's life utterly ruined by a capitalist hypergreed corpo but idk maybe it's just me.

[-] normalmente@hexbear.net 14 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Nintendo products are also extremely expensive and niche. Like no wonder people are using illegal copies. If your parents aren't white upper middle class good luck with playing more than like 2 nintendo games a year.

That's if you're even that target demographic, fuck all single adults who live alone I guess?

[-] Jenniferrr@hexbear.net 18 points 8 months ago
[-] Cromalin@hexbear.net 29 points 8 months ago

yuzu settled out of court, but the terms were basically yuzu giving up literally everything and never working on anything similar ever again and also paying nintendo 2.4 million dollars

at least they don't owe nintendo all the money they make for the rest of their lives like happened with that other guy i suppose

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 28 points 8 months ago

Greg Bowser, whose debt slavery to Nintendo includes garnishing his meager prison wages.

[-] KnilAdlez@hexbear.net 14 points 8 months ago

It's worse, actually. They must also argue to a judge that:

Developing or distributing software, including Yuzu, that in its ordinary course functions only when cryptographic keys are integrated without authorization, violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Actโ€™s prohibition on trafficking in devices that circumvent effective technological measures, because the software is primarily designed for the purpose of circumventing technological measures.

[-] KoboldKomrade@hexbear.net 13 points 8 months ago

The only good way this could end is if the NSAetc were forced to stop because of DMCA.

[-] Yurt_Owl@hexbear.net 17 points 8 months ago

I can vaguely understand yuzu even if i think its bullshit but citra? Why? They don't fucking support the 3ds anymore its all abandonware

[-] Cromalin@hexbear.net 20 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

nintendo didn't sue citra, it's just collateral damage from forbidding the yuzu devs from helping emulate nintendo stuff

[-] Yurt_Owl@hexbear.net 3 points 8 months ago

Ah yeah me stoopid makes sense now. They definitely don't want to end up like that guy who has to pay a portion of his wage to nintendo forever

[-] dkr567@hexbear.net 16 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

The boomers at nintendo gives no fucks regarding it being abandonware unfortunately.

[-] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 13 points 8 months ago

They shared some devs. I haven't read the specifics yet, but at very least I imagine anyone involved with this suit wouldn't want to take any risks.

[-] jackmarxist@hexbear.net 6 points 8 months ago

Nintendo is a company that sells 30 year old video games at full price

[-] save_vs_death@hexbear.net 16 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Look, i'm really sorry for these nerds and so on, but Panda3ds and Ryujinx (for switch games) were better projects anyway.

[-] Tankiedesantski@hexbear.net 15 points 8 months ago

After the revolution, all Nintendo adults will be sentenced to play only gritty 2000s brown cover shooters.

[-] normalmente@hexbear.net 5 points 8 months ago

No, they will play SuperTuxKart while they reflect on what they'd worshipped
