Actually drugs are good for you because they broaden your mind.

Actually smoking is good for you because it relieves stress.

Actually murder is good because it decreases the population.

You can rationalise anything, especially when addiction is involved.

I thought murder was good to relieve stress.

Fuck, I've been doing it for wrong reasons.

The chasing part is good for my cardio!

There's a lot of research suggesting the opposite

Problems you're distracted from don't go away, they grow.

Yes, and no. You don’t want to only do this with all your problems, all the time, but avoidance is a perfectly valid coping/self-protection mechanism, and we shouldn’t be afraid of using it like any other tool to help us go through hardship. Sometimes, purposefully choosing to face things later, but taking that time to prepare, heal, and be better equipped to face your problems, can absolutely be the better choice.

For example, my wife and I have learned very rough news a couple of weeks back. It has long term implications, and requires a lot of research on our part. It’s however very emotionally taxing to do so. We therefore are taking in the info as piecemeal as I can, and completely avoid the subject the rest of the time. It so far has kept us sane in a situation that triggered my panic attacks for the first time in a decade when I first learned about it.

Agreed. As long as you're processing/dealing whatever, however slow, it's fine. Speaking from personal experience, filling every bit of time you can with stimulation to avoid dealing with things will fuck you up in the long term.

There are many distractions but also many reminders of the failures of society.

At first glance, yes. The rough parts of life can be smoothed out by drugs, such as very immersive games, social media, etc. But the issue here is that the drug dealer is way too efficient and powerful. Their goal is to keep you on that drug perpetually, which is why corpo media is a bad idea. I agree, immersing yourself to get a break from reality is valid though.

Is this the result of the "being far is healthy" post from yesterday?

I would agree that it's a drug, but not necessarily one with medicinal value.

Fentanyl will make you feel better, till it doesn't.

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
