The only ghibli movie I ever watched is Spirited Way, stunning visuals and interesting story but kinda slow. Is that how they usually go?

Give Princess Mononoke and/or Howl's Moving Castle a shot. On average, Ghibli movies are slow-paced and mostly slice-of-life, but those two have more action in them.

Howls Moving Castle for whimsy, Princess Mononoke for nightmares.

I say this as a massive fan who grew up watching a couple of cool anime films that I later learned were Ghibli. I watched Princess Mononoke at like 25years old and there were a few “holy shit” moments.

You should try a few more.

  • Castle in the sky
  • Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
  • Grave of the fireflies (followed by My Neighbor Totoro as it was originally released as a double feature)

I'm not sure why Spirited away seems to be the go to Ghibli film (maybe it is less offensive) but it's probably one of my least favorites from the studio.

Nausicaä is the best one in my opinion but everyone treats it like one of the worst

[-] Siegfried@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago

Nausicaä and mononoke are my favorites

It's about pacifism and respecting nature. So naturally it's politically polarizing to some people.

I totally agree with it being one of the best

All Ghibli films are about pacifism and respecting nature.

[-] CubitOom@infosec.pub 5 points 8 months ago

True, but some are more so than others. Like in spirited away. It's kinda more just hinted at and it's not central to the plot of the film. Which is why I think it's more popular of a film in countries that rely on war and exploitation.

Spirited away is more about over-consumption and modern greed I'd say.

Maybe people are just afraid of bugs.

Grave of the fireflies is hands down the saddest movie I've ever seen.

I bawled my eyes out

Add the boy and the heron to the list - it's a bit darker than others but worth every minute of your time.

You are forgetting The Wind Rises, Kiki's Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke at least.

[-] BluesF@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

Imo if you watch only one, watch Princess Mononoke. What a great film.

Outstanding.

Edit: Unironically. My top 10 films, in no particular order: Alien, The Thing, Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner, My Neighbor Totoro, Whisper of the Heart, Kiki's Delivery Service, Lord of the Rings
