2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay was written by Kubrick and science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, and was inspired by Clarke's 1951 short story "The Sentinel" and other short stories by Clarke. Clarke also published a novelisation of the film, in part written concurrently with the screenplay, after the film's release. The film stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester, and Douglas Rain and follows a voyage by astronauts, scientists, and the sentient supercomputer HAL to Jupiter to investigate an alien monolith.

The film is noted for its scientifically accurate depiction of space flight, pioneering special effects, and ambiguous imagery. Kubrick avoided conventional cinematic and narrative techniques; dialogue is used sparingly, and there are long sequences accompanied only by music. The soundtrack incorporates numerous works of classical music, including pieces by composers such as Richard Strauss, Johann Strauss II, Aram Khachaturian, and Gyรถrgy Ligeti.

The film received diverse critical responses, ranging from those who saw it as darkly apocalyptic to those who saw it as an optimistic reappraisal of the hopes of humanity. Critics noted its exploration of themes such as human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and the possibility of extraterrestrial life. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, winning Kubrick the award for his direction of the visual effects. The film is now widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made.

Parents found documents showing my grandfather dodged going to Germany to do reconstruction bs in the late 59s by having just had my uncle and getting a job the day before he was due to serve.

Question for the old heads that I hope is okay to bring up:

I dimly remember one of the founders/important admins of hexbear (was it still ChaCha back then?) being accused of grooming/abuse or something of that ilk (again, dim memory, so I apologize for my lack of specificity and don't mean to make light of it). The admin stepped away from the site for the investigation to avoid the appearance of impropriety, and after some time it was determined that they didn't do it, but they never came back.

So... what's up with them now? Does anyone know? I don't mean to dig up old drama but the memory popped back into my head recently and it's been kicking around in there without an answer

If I had a nickel for every time a Minecraft April fool's joke was more interesting than the real updates I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's sad it's happened twice

This is probably common knowledge but HAL's acronym is only one letter away from IBM

Therefore HAL is a space holocaust collaborator theory-gary

Quick question about the movie "The People's Joker": yea or nay? It's coming to a local indie theatre and the spoiler-free synopsis I read made it sound pretty interesting.

Had another bad day in terms of mental health today. I don't understand how I can literally sit here for hours, just wasting time, and then beat myself up for not doing anything. I guess it's just depression, but it really fucking sucks

There's a Chinese word or expression that sounds to me like "shu shu" and I hear it used a bunch and I have no idea what it means but it's the only Chinese word I can actually pick out of a conversation and I'm very curious about it but I have absolutely no ability to pursue that curiosity.
