I really feel like we as a country should make a bigger deal out of events like this. It's a good non-religious-excuse to celebrate and we should celebrate the natural world. This and leap day, which I think should be a public holiday.

Absolutely. It's a pretty universal neutral event.

Speaking of which, I'd really like us to make a bigger deal of some of our more traditional events, I.e. May Day, Harvest Festival. Too much of that is being erased.

I blame American culture imports, too much Halloween, and Santa Claus (it's Father Christmas!). I've even heard of some people doing Thanksgiving!
