The little blue light on rings comes on when they pass, then when they go to check it out it makes a noise when it starts recording. By cat standards that's a toy

Bingo! I live in an area where there's lots of wild life, including cats (they don't appear to be owned by anyone) that roam through our neighborhood.. we have a camera where an LED lights up the moment there's detection, cats and racoons are more likely to approach and analyze.

That's the opposite of a problem

Why is that mini split so close to the ground? Does it not rain there?

[-] rbn@sopuli.xyz 10 points 2 years ago

Air-water heatpumps are far more efficient than air-air! ;)

[-] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

Regular heatpumps are mounted that low too.

Where do you live that you get 4" of standing water when it rains?

[-] gst0ck@lemm.ee 5 points 2 years ago

Texas recently.

[-] Desistance@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Louisiana. Heavy rain is a regular thing throughout the year.

I'm not sure why you think that would be an issue. Mounting the exterior compressor close to the ground is common practice for ease of maintenance. Getting it wet isn't really a problem. I'm not really sure why we're having HVAC install discussions in a cat forum though :P

Most mini split installs I've seen are not so low. The lowest I've seen is at least a foot off the ground until now. Maybe it's not a problem for them.

A lot of times they will mount them to the wall if the unit is small enough. It's cheaper and the refrigerant line run is shorter. But for larger units it's common practice to mount them on a concrete pad on the ground. In this case, someone probably just didn't want to spring for the wall mounting hardware, so they put it on a couple cinder blocks. It's not ideal, but it doesn't really hurt anything.

Maybe it's like discussing Linux on animé forums ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[-] StaySquared@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago

lol.. does the cam have a little LED light? Otherwise, that cat's intuition is cray.

[-] XTL@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 years ago

Cats also have insanely sensitive and wide frequency hearing. It might notice some sort of coil or switcher whine or other noise that wasn't there before.

"excuse me sir, what are you doing here?"

[-] Jimmycakes@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago

How much was that mini split?
