While I agree in the case of big box stores, the complaint isn’t necessarily valid.
For instance, if you said it about Bill Gates, it’d be misplaced. He gives a lot to charity - and does work to locate the best places to put that money to use. He also asks others to give money for said cause.
Yeah, but if they get you to do it through them, they get to say they did it and keep more of their money through tax breaks.
Here is the thing. If you personally donate $20 to charity, you get a $20 a charitable donation tax break. If a corporation donates $20 to charity "on your behalf", the corporation gets a $20 a charitable donation tax break. That's the scam. Never donate or round up at stores. Donate directly.
Could be wrong: I've been told they are already signed up to give the money no matter, us giving that dollar is just padding for their tax write offs.
