Image is of a colectivo: an armed group, usually operating in impoverished areas, which act to support and defend the socialist government of Venezuela. They are often derided as vigilante terrorist groups which prop up the government, because cops are only bad when they are socialist and not murdering minorities, I suppose.

Maduro's party, the PSUV, has won the election after a staggering amount of propaganda by the opposition, who said their polls suggested they were going to win and that Maduro's loss was inevitable. The reaction across Latin America is what one would expect. Left-leaning leaders are generally respecting the results and congratulating Maduro, while those on the right and/or are US puppets (such as in semirecently-couped Peru) are calling for recounts, or even that the election was illegitimate. The US itself is also unhappy about the results. We shall soon see if their unhappiness boils over into yet another coup attempt.

Personally, I think they should have ran Guaido again.

guaido-despair guaido

Thank you to @Redcuban1959@hexbear.net for the election coverage here, and everything else they do in the news megathread.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful. Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.

Putin needs to give nukes to Israels neighbours now. That’s the only way NATO will understand that genocide is not ok.

Latest Jeremy Scahill interview

Does Israel Really Believe It Can Win a War Against Hezbollah?

Amal Saad, a leading expert on the Lebanese resistance movement, says all-out war could lead to Israel’s downfall

Lots of good reasons why Hezbollah didn't do the missile strike the other day.

[-] SeventyTwoTrillion@hexbear.net 54 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

This is the critical part of the interview IMO:

Jeremy Scahill: If Israel does commit and they do want war with Hezbollah, what does that look like from the Lebanese side, based on the history of these conflicts and wars and Hezbollah's response to Israel? If Israel does send in ground forces or engages in a very heavy, wider bombing campaign, what could we expect Hezbollah's response to look like?

Amal Saad: Well, I think the Israeli intelligence is quite aware because I've read a lot of these analyses in Israeli and U.S. intelligence reports and others, which is that Hezbollah—first of all, I don't think we would see what we saw in 2006. I don't think Israel would even get to invade Lebanon in the same way. I don't think it would be able to stage a ground incursion, definitely not of that magnitude. And Israel would not be in a purely offensive position. Israel would be also in a defensive position because Hezbollah would also infiltrate and make incursions into Israel proper. So, it's going to look very different, just in terms of the overall strategy of the war, that it will be an offensive defense on Hezbollah's part. It won't just be defense.

Secondly, the fact that Hezbollah has now fully conventionalized, it's no longer even a hybrid force. I've spoken to military experts here, and I've been curious myself to see what they think. Where is [Hezbollah] on the spectrum of guerrilla to conventional army? Is it sort of in the middle, like in 2006? They've said, “No, it's actually a fully fledged conventional force now. But obviously it has these sort of capabilities of an irregular armed force. It still retains them and has that experience.” So we're talking here about a much more sophisticated military organization with well over 100,000 fighters, well over that number, over 150,000 missiles and rockets. You know, back in 2006, Hezbollah had just a few thousand fighters, far fewer rockets, much less sophisticated missiles and rockets. Basically everything that Iran has, all the weapons Iran has, you can be certain Hezbollah has them, too. That's what we know. And that's aside from the things that Hezbollah is manufacturing domestically, like it's drone technology—it's manufacturing its own drones now. So, we're talking here about a vastly different military creature than 2006.

And, again, the tactics will not just be purely defensive. They will be offensive. And that's not even factoring in other actors in the resistance axis who are itching to join the fight and have declared their intent to send hundreds of thousands of fighters, such as the Houthis [from Yemen], to Lebanon.

From all the information I've been gathering, it would actually lead to the unraveling of the Israeli state. We're not talking here about just a defeat for Israel like in 2006. It would be the sort of defeat that would actually lead to its demise. This is why, when we talk about “the great war,” which is not a matter of if, it's when, when that war happens, which is an inevitability, [Hezbollah] have always said that that is going to be the war that will change the face of the region. So, we are talking here about a scenario which would definitely lead to the destruction of a lot of Lebanon — no one is discounting that or belittling that. But at the same time, it would lead to the destruction of Israel and while it would lead to the destruction of Lebanon in material terms, that destruction would not lead to the unraveling of the Lebanese state in the same way that it would lead to the unraveling of the Israeli or Zionist regime. I think that's one way of looking at it.

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will have a telephone conversation with his counterparts from Brazil and Colombia, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Gustavo Petro, about the situation in Venezuela, without interference and respecting the self-determination of the people. Something that the OAS did not do, he stated.

Claudia also repeated what AMLO said about the OAS and Venezuela.

With much of the world's attention directed toward West Asia, there was another large-scale ukkkraine drone attack against targets within the pre-2014 borders of the Russian Federation last night. The attack appears to have saturated air defences. Targets where strikes were successful include several oil facilities, an apartment block, and an ammunition depot on the grounds of the Morozovsk airfield.

Sources that follow are from Twitter, so standard CWs apply: reactionary and pro-imperialist content is ubiquitous in the comments.

Pro-Russian source (summary from Rybar)

Pro-Ukrainian "OSINT" source (satellite imagery of Morozovsk after the ammo depot was blown)

The self-proclaimed DICTATOR of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, described the results issued by the CNE as a “fraud” that has “no relation with reality”. “We broke diplomatic relations with Maduro 4 years ago. We will not reopen them until his people can elect their leaders in real elections”, expressed the president in his X account.

Dude says this shit without any irony lol

Mexican President (Still AMLO) condemns OAS's interfering attitude in Venezuela - TelesurSpanish (Translated)

Article

López Obrador asserted that it is necessary for all countries to respect Venezuela's autonomy.

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, condemned this Tuesday during his morning conference at the National Palace the interfering attitude of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Venezuela's internal affairs.

López Obrador affirmed “the OAS has to get involved. That is interference, that is why the OAS has no credibility”. The Mexican president asked: “On what grounds does the OAS maintain that the other candidate won? Where is the evidence?

Likewise, he urged to respect the self-determination of the peoples, to avoid violent demonstrations and to stop political incitement.

In this sense, he referred to international actors, internationalist experts and advisors, and stressed that each country is free, independent and sovereign.

The Head of State criticized the hypocrisy of former Presidents Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderón, who opposed the recount of votes in Mexico and are now “international observers”.

All Latin American nations should leave the OAS and strengthen CELAC.

Nicolas Maduro said he was willing to return to dialogue with the United States government, if "popular sovereignty was respected", and if the country "stopped threatening Venezuela", and "Qatar's commitment" was fulfilled.

President Maduro speech today: "We have defeated the first part of the criminal fascist coup d'état. Let's go for them and fascism in Venezuela will not pass! I will protect the people, street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood, from the fascists, murderers, country sellers and imperialists."

Nicolas Maduro announces that maximum security prisons will be set up for people who are at opposition protests, which will serve as re-education centers for opponents.

Maria Corina Machado, opposition leader, called on Venezuelans to gather in the streets this Saturday, August 3rd, to "show the strength of the people".

I guess Gonzalez is already out of the picture? Maybe he already went to Argentina or Miami.

Venezuela's Army backs the Goverment

Venezuela's defense minister, Padrino Lopez, has aligned himself with the Nicolás Maduro goverment and said that the country is undergoing an attempted coup d'état perpetrated by fascists.

Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López issued a statement condemning "violent actions" promoted by the Venezuelan far-right yesterday. Mentioned 23 servicemen and 25 police officers wounded, as well as the death of a National Guard Sargent who was shot.

In his press conference, Padrino said Venezuela is facing a coup attempt orchestrated by the far-right and vowed it would be defeated

Israel’s armed forces confirmed that they killed Hamas’s military commander, Muhammad Deif, in an air strike on Khan Younis, a city in southern Gaza, in July. Mr Deif was responsible for orchestrating the militant group’s attacks that killed nearly 1,200 Israelis on October 7th. The announcement comes a day after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’s political leader, in Iran. Yoav Gallant, Israel’s defence minister, claimed that Mr Deif’s death showed that Israel was “achieving the goals of the war”.

This is from the Economist. Another assassination. Been some serious killings, attempted and successful, over the past few days.

South Africa congratulated Maduro's election victory. Election observers from South Africa also stated the elections were free and fair, with them also praising the abundance of voting stations, prompt audits, ID and biometric verification, electronic voting also with backup paper ballots. The observation was supported by COSATU, ANC, EFF, SACP, A4P, among others. The live radio station Salaamedia also stated that it should come as no surprise the usual Western suspects disputed the election results.

Ibrahim Traore on establishing a new national bank:
https://xcancel.com/CapitaineIb226/status/1819314679392469144

This Friday, August 2, 2024, I officially launched the activities of the Banque des Dépôts du Trésor.

With integrity as its compass, this bank is a tool and a symbol of economic and financial sovereignty of Burkina Faso. It will be closer to the populations and will contribute to the socio-economic development of our country through a more adapted method of financing structuring projects and programs.

I invite the Burkinabè, public and private development organizations and economic operators to use the “Burkindlim” bank to participate in the work of collective construction of a sovereign economy serving the development of our country.

Great success at the Banque des Dépôts du Trésor!

Norway's succdem-led regime is trying a novel method to raise declining birth rates: Improving material conditions for families.

Preschool childcare rates will be lowered from USD 275 to USD 183 per month. In municipalities with low birth rates the rates will be halved. Norwegian parents are already only required to pay for the care of their first two children.

It's been raining all day in Caracas. If you've seen any protest videos alleging to be from today in which it's not raining, they are using old footage.

As of right now (3:54 PM) there have been a few small protests around the city. There could be more when the full results are announced. But there are also old videos being misrepresented in bad faith on the social media networks.
