Well, Iran and their allies' response may happen sometime this week and apparently they aren't talking to the US in order to negotiate how and where they will hit Israel (and Shoigu arrived in Tehran rather auspiciously), the Bangladeshi government just fell, F16s have been given to Ukraine, there are fascist riots in the UK, and Japan just had its worst stock fall since 1987 and seems to be taking several other countries/corporations with it. I don't really know where to look right now.

The COTW (Country of the Week) label is designed to spur discussion and debate about a specific country every week in order to help the community gain greater understanding of the domestic situation of often-understudied nations. If you've wanted to talk about the country or share your experiences, but have never found a relevant place to do so, now is your chance! However, don't worry - this is still a general news megathread where you can post about ongoing events from any country.

The Country of the Week is Iraq! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Please check out the HexAtlas!

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA daily-ish reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

English-language Palestinian Marxist-Leninist twitter account. Alt here.
English-language twitter account that collates news (and has automated posting when the person running it goes to sleep).
Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon. - Telegram is @IbnRiad.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis. - Telegram is @EyesOnSouth.
English-language Twitter account in the same group as the previous two. - Telegram here.

English-language PalestineResist telegram channel.

Various sources that are covering the Ukraine conflict are also covering the one in Palestine, like Rybar.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful. Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

US Muslim group urges Blinken to resign over refusal to sanction Israeli army unit

The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) says the US secretary of state has “knowingly violated US law by backtracking” on plans to sanction the Netzah Yehuda battalion over rights abuse allegations.

The Israeli military unit “has clearly committed gross human rights violations using US weapons”, CAIR Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said in a statement.

“Secretary Blinken’s cowardly, morally reprehensible and blatantly illegal decision confirms what numerous State Department whistleblowers have said: he is disregarding the conclusions of career diplomats, as well as experts on federal and international law,” Mitchell said.

“Secretary Blinken is now as much of a war criminal as the war criminal he will continue to arm, Israeli defense minister Gallant, and he should resign his office in disgrace.”

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said he was “appalled” by the Israeli military strike and the “tragic loss of life”.

He wrote on X: “Hamas must stop endangering civilians. Israel must comply with International Humanitarian Law”, and called for a ceasefire to “protect civilians, free all hostages, and end restrictions on aid”.

The SPD-led German ministry of defense is issuing a "tradition decree" (Traditionserlass), which will allow Nazi soldiers to be honored as role models, if they worked for the Bundeswehr post-war. Though they do also note their "impressive" record during the war.

So mask off I guess. (taz | archive)

The U.S. Has Dozens of Secret Bases Across the Middle East. They Keep Getting Attacked (The Intercept, Aug 6 2024)

The US has regularly justified maintaining secrecy about the bases by claiming that, as CENTCOM told The Intercept last year, “in order to protect our forces and maintain operational security, we will not confirm U.S base locations.” Forbeck — a private contractor from the Red Gate Group working for CENTCOM — refused to provide even a count of U.S. bases in the region. “Numbers. Cannot provide that because opsec,” she said, referring to operational security, while failing to explain how providing a simple tally of bases could jeopardize U.S. personnel.

[...] But America’s enemies, specifically Iranian-backed militias, have had no trouble finding and striking U.S. bases since the late 2010s.

Reading this, I immediately thought of all those articles a few years back about how China were uprooting US spy networks.

China Used Stolen Data to Expose CIA Operatives in Africa and Europe (FP, 2020)

Around 2013, U.S. intelligence began noticing an alarming pattern: Undercover CIA personnel, flying into countries in Africa and Europe for sensitive work, were being rapidly and successfully identified by Chinese intelligence, according to three former U.S. officials. The surveillance by Chinese operatives began in some cases as soon as the CIA officers had cleared passport control. Sometimes, the surveillance was so overt that U.S. intelligence officials speculated that the Chinese wanted the U.S. side to know they had identified the CIA operatives, disrupting their missions; other times, however, it was much more subtle and only detected through U.S. spy agencies’ own sophisticated technical countersurveillance capabilities.

AIPAC has taken out its second "Squad" member: Cori Bush. They dropped $8M on her race to get a "pro-Israel progressive" Wesley Bell to primary her. They ran the campaign through one of their PAC cutouts and didn't mention Israel ones in any of their attack ads.

Between Bowman and Bush, AIPAC spent $22.5M primarying black progessives.

Looks like the State Department may be backing down on the Venezuelan elections: https://venezuelanalysis.com/news/venezuela-cne-turns-over-electoral-data-to-supreme-court-us-walks-back-gonzalez-recognition/

In response to a question, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said that the Biden administration had not recognized González as president, a departure from the position assumed by Secretary of State Antony Blinken who declared González as the “winner” of the election.

Miller instead pointed to ongoing mediation efforts by Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia. He further emphasized the need for Venezuela to “transition back to democratic norms”, stopping short of calling for González to take office.

so something i don't really grasp about the IDF is how their casualty figures necessitate the extraordinary draft measures. i take it for granted they must be lying and twisting the truth but still, are there any guesses what a 'real' figure is then? ~600,000 minus 700 or so admitted fatalities just doesn't seem like a very desperate situation. is there like x10 that in non fatal casualties or something they're being shy about publicizing? are they desperately filling up the ranks to strengthen the whole occupation just in preparation of things getting wider and deadlier? but then why the hell did they have to redeploy troops from Gaza against their rioters?

sorry if these are stupid questions it's just seems fishy to me

A Zionist town councilmember in Teaneck, New Jersey alleged that she had been the victim of an anti-Semitic break-in at her home. It turns out she called the cops after forgetting she'd left the light on in her basement. The New York Times refused to correct the story, even when one of the journalists covering it pressed to "give readers a fuller picture."

Excerpts

As a pivotal example of alleged antisemitic activity in the area, my co-author John Leland, a Times staff reporter, quoted township councilmember Hillary Goldberg, who claimed that her home had been “broken into” as part of a string of abuse in response to her vocal support of Israel and her Jewish background.

“I have been threatened; I had a box truck with my picture on it and the words ‘liar liar’ driven around town; my house has been broken into; I have received antisemitic messages,” Goldberg told Leland, adding: “I have never felt so afraid to be Jewish as now.”

. . .

According to the first police report, dated February 10, six officers responded to a call at Goldberg’s publicly listed address because, according to the complainant, “Lights basement were on // were not on when left // back door was locked when got home unlocked.” The half-dozen officers checked the property but found no sign of forced entry nor anything else amiss. Two subsequent checks of the area found nothing further, and a follow-up investigation by a sergeant two days later ended the same.

. . .

Believing a correction to the Times story was in order—or at least an update, to give readers a fuller picture—I shared the police reports with Leland—who told me that he had already gotten them and, despite the explicit contradictions, no correction would be issued. When presented with the police reports, management at the Times also declined to reconcile them with its coverage. Instead, managing director of external communications, Charlie Stadtlander, said in a statement that the article was “thoroughly reported, fact-checked and edited, and we stand behind its publication.” Goldberg did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Nicolas Maduro: "Today, on my TV show at 8:00 PM, I will publicly break relations with WhatsApp, because WhatsApp is being used to threaten Venezuela. Little by little, I will move my contacts to Telegram and WeChat, WhatsApp out of Venezuela. It is necessary to do so, say no to WhatsApp. There, criminals threaten the youth, the popular leaders, from phones in Colombia, Miami, Peru and Chile. Cowards hide behind anonymity, but I tell the fascists, you will hide, but the revolutionary youth is in the streets and we will never hide."

I joked some days ago that Maduro would probably use Chinese or create his own Social Media. I guess I was right.

Seen a lot of videos of Israeli tourists in Japan screaming at locals protesting the genocide.

The obviously takeaway is that they act like they own the place everywhere in the world, but a secondary thought I had: are there an unusually high number of Japanese pro-Palestine protests? Like versus other countries? Or do Israelis just love visiting there?

I really need to learn more about Iraq, but I usually say that for every COTW country.

Americans have no clue what our government did to Iraq. On more than one occasion, I have tried to explain to people here how horrific the destruction of Iraq was (both in terms of human lives and infrastructure), and how much Iraqis despise America for this. Every. Single. Time… the response is “but at least we got rid of Saddam” (with the implication that the Iraqis should be grateful we got rid of him).

Death to America.

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
