I've never heard anyone refere to it as a comet before, it was always an asteroid.

You're right! The article explains the comet idea is only a few years old, and new data confirms it's an asteroid, not a comet.

I think comets have predictable paths for long periods of time so they show up again and again, like Haley’s comet
