This is making me realize how much of real life operates with what people would consider troll physics were it not observably true. Black holes come to mind. Also shooting bullets underwater.

[-] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.world 61 points 10 months ago

Einstein: My theory predicts that there could be a hole in reality that we could never observe from the outside, but that's ridiculous. It can't exist.

Oppenheimer: I guess these holes could form in our universe when a heavy star runs out of fuel, but I doubt this means anything real.

Wheeler: Wait a sec...

I'm curious now, what did Wheeler find/discover/realize?

He named them black holes and pushed for research into them. He also didn't believe they could exist at first.

[-] marcos@lemmy.world 41 points 10 months ago

Have you looked at Quantum Mechanics?

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 65 points 10 months ago

I tried, but I altered its state by observing it.

Perfect answer

[-] moistclump@lemmy.world 29 points 10 months ago

What happens when you shoot a bullet under water?

[-] Ibaudia@lemmy.world 36 points 10 months ago

For most weapons they shoot at a normal speed then stop after like 3 feet

[-] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 26 points 10 months ago

It doesn't travel nearly as far as you would normally expect. Some guns are useless to hit underwater targets.

[-] hperrin@lemmy.world 110 points 10 months ago

This is a stupid idea and it will never work.

[-] Huschke@lemmy.world 44 points 10 months ago

Yeah, what would you even call such an invention? Ballon Aircraft? Hot Aircraft? Air Hot Ballon? It just doesn't make any sense.

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 27 points 10 months ago

Hot sack flybox, obviously.

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 18 points 10 months ago

Things heavier than air cannot fly!

[-] mossy_@lemmy.world 83 points 10 months ago

scientists will say this is real

[-] cheddar@programming.dev 12 points 10 months ago

Look at what scientists have been demanding our respect for all this time.

[-] Klear@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago

They have played us for absolute fools

OP gona be found dead by suicide with two gunshots back of head 😵

[-] takeda@lemmy.world 22 points 10 months ago

I'm wondering how hot air balloons were invented. Did someone in the past started a fire in their tent, and the tent flew away?

[-] GluWu@lemm.ee 45 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

The first hot air balloons were those sky lanterns which were used in China as military signals. It took 1500 years for some bored French guys to say "yeah, let's make that but big enough to carry us".

[-] antonim@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 10 months ago

Admittedly the Chinese weren't lacking in ambition.

[-] Rhaedas@fedia.io 10 points 10 months ago

Probably smaller. China has very early history of using small hot air balloons for signalling or celebrations. It may have taken the invention of thin paper for something light enough for buoyancy.

[-] workerONE@lemmy.world 20 points 10 months ago

Problem, science?

[-] Icalasari@fedia.io 19 points 10 months ago

I

That is literally how hot air balloons work

So yes, that actually works, you just need a REALLY big sack

[-] verdare@beehaw.org 41 points 10 months ago

I think that’s the joke.

[-] subignition@fedia.io 29 points 10 months ago

it's the first time I've seen this sort of reversal on the "trollface perpetual motion machine" memes, it's pretty great

[-] Mambert@beehaw.org 3 points 10 months ago

My favorite is about nuclear power plants.

Fissile materials make heat

Put them in water

Use the boiling water to run a steam generator

Free electricity

[-] Icalasari@fedia.io 23 points 10 months ago
[-] verdare@beehaw.org 13 points 10 months ago

It happens to all of us, eventually.

[-] atomicorange@lemmy.world 19 points 10 months ago

Sounds fake.

[-] Melatonin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 10 months ago

That may even be the joke.

[-] jabathekek@sopuli.xyz 8 points 10 months ago
[-] Klear@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

That comment above may have been sarcastic.

[-] I_am_10_squirrels@beehaw.org 19 points 10 months ago

Shouldn't the last panel be something about pondering the orb while flying?

[-] Sparky@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 10 months ago

Anon discovered hot air balloons

[-] Alice@beehaw.org 12 points 10 months ago

This would never work!

[-] Ioughttamow@fedia.io 8 points 10 months ago

So I just need to become the town gossip to harness this power? Sorcerers having charisma as the primary stat is starting to make sense

[-] Noodle07@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

That was invented where I live, not OC !
