It's bad when people mispronounce mischievous but this dude actually spelled it the way people mispronounce it lmao

[-] 00L10@feddit.org 26 points 2 months ago

At this point I realize I've most likely ever only come across the mispronounced version...

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 18 points 2 months ago

Isn't the dictionary out of date then?

[-] Ookami38@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 months ago

Sure is. Someone should tell Meriam.

[-] i_dont_want_to@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 months ago

If they don't listen, time to escalate to Webster.

[-] oce@jlai.lu 4 points 2 months ago

The British seem very happy with keeping the "-tre" ending but pronouncing it "-ter" for centuries.

[-] Zess@lemmy.world -2 points 2 months ago

Not surprising, I think they even mispronounced it in an episode of Futurama. Just a shame because the proper way sounds so much better.

[-] randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 2 points 2 months ago

Mischievious is actually a common misspelling

[-] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 61 points 2 months ago

I had custom firmware installed on my PSP and got in trouble for turning the projector on and off on high school.

[-] bobs_monkey@lemm.ee 18 points 2 months ago

I was a few years out of HS when those blasters became more wide spread (my HTC M7 had one, though 6 years too late), and how I wish I had one back then.

[-] DannyBoy@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 months ago

It was a great time indeed when the popularity of IR blasters overlapped with being in high school.

[-] cm0002@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

Aw shit, why didn't I think of this! I too had a PSP with CFW in HS, but I just used it for... totally "backed up"....games lmao

[-] Kerb@discuss.tchncs.de 56 points 2 months ago

god i miss having an ir blaster on my phone

mine doesn't work

[-] glitch1985@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Note 3 was awesome.

[-] superduperpirate@lemmy.world 36 points 2 months ago

I used to want one of these IR blaster things to kill tvs in waiting rooms, but then earbuds got better and cheaper and more generally useful.

[-] IDew@lemm.ee 31 points 2 months ago

Had a HTC One M8 back in the day. Had a lot of fun confusing the shit out of the teachers after turning off the audio system and projector lmao

I had a Casio remote control watch that I was actually using all the time in my room. I used it in an evil way only once, since the TV sales guy was showing off how loud the super high-end TV is. As he turned the volume up with a maniacal smile, I just pressed OFF button. New money couple lost interest immediately.

It is Casio CMD-40 for the interested.

[-] 7U5K3N@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago

Had one in highschool. Good times

[-] interurbain1er@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

Same. Drove a teacher nearly insane. I stopped just before she threw the TV out of a window.

Eventually someone must have figured it out because they masked the IR receivers of all TVs with electric tape.

[-] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 28 points 2 months ago

Wait until anon learns about the flipper zero

[-] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 months ago

Or even just something simple as a tv-b-gone

[-] aluminium@lemmy.world 28 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Samsung phones at that time also had IR blasters

[-] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I miss that and the head phone jack. Oh and replaceable batteries! Popping a new battery you have pre charged was so convenient.

[-] TheMightyCanuck@sh.itjust.works 25 points 2 months ago

Smart TV 'remote' apps are infinitely worse than an IR blaster

[-] DrownedRats@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

For everyday use, sure, but for trolling they're just excellent!

During the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show, an individual associated with Gizmodo brought a TV-B-Gone remote control and shut off many display monitors at booths and during demos affecting several companies. These actions caused the individual to be banned for life from future CES events.

Legendary

[-] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 23 points 2 months ago

I always wanted one because I was pretty young when they were putting IR blasters in cell phones and I thought I'd be able to remote control anything like Johnny Five in Short Circuit 2.

[-] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 20 points 2 months ago

I miss my old HTC thunderbolt. Removable storage, IR blaster, removable battery. Phones while they have gotten faster, and the software /cameras improved, the actual phones design has gotten so much worse over the years.

[-] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 17 points 2 months ago

One of the things I like about my OnePlus 12

Best use is it allows me to control the A/C in my apartment complex's gym :)

[-] fossphi@lemm.ee 7 points 2 months ago

Ooh, didn't know that newer phones also have IR blasters! That's good to know! Do you know if the custom ROM experience is good?

[-] umbrella@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

it works flawless on my xiaomi with lineageos

[-] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

If i had known about all the bloatware samsung shoves into their phones before i got one, it woulda never left the shelf. There are about 5 junk apps in my play store queue right now and was able to uninstall another 4 so they dont show up in the list, but its massively inconvenient to have to do that to begin with. Would rather be allowed to opt out of the stuff out of the box.

[-] popekingjoe@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

I do this with my OnePlus Open and the TV at work.

[-] Yuki@kutsuya.dev 8 points 2 months ago

I had this watched with a calculator and ir blaster. It was great! I still have it actually

[-] swag_money@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

trolling aside, has anybody had any luck with those 3.5mm ir blaster adapters? my phone has a headphone jack but no blaster and i don't have the original remote for my stereo :p

[-] psud@aussie.zone 2 points 2 months ago

They should work, although you might need to use the app that they provide. I wouldn't be surprised if a random TV remote app didn't work with an audio to IR widget
