It is widely disputed that Columbus ever was or was considered an Italian.
Especially since Italy didn't exist for another almost 400 years.
He was literally brought back to Spain in chains.
And later pardoned and made another voyage
I mean yeah, that's how it was back then. He repented like a good Christian and they let him go back again.
They never gave him any of his titles back though.
