i used to have this cuban friend who was so overly proud of his latino heritage that it made him a spanish snob and liked to make fun of my chicano spanish whenever i used it. i learned to slap back at his gatekeeping by doing some gatekeeping of my own. i would ask the group we were around atm which one of us was latino and which one was american. since we were both in san francisco, my garden variety mexican looks consistently got me picked as latino and his afrocubano appearance fingered him as american. it eventually worked and he stopped making fun of my spanish.

so, to be fair: if san franciscan liberals are unaware that latinos come in all colors; then these kinds of mis-categorizations makes sense coming from ICE.

it's obvious if you've had any personal experiences with INS/ICE; but most, fortunately, don't so it also makes sense that this must be said out loud and in print event though it's self apparent.
