Trump stiffed the southwestern city to the tune of half a million, complicating his return to New Mexico

Former President Donald Trump had a hard time finding a spot for his Halloween rally in Albuquerque, New Mexico rally, as unpaid bills came back to haunt his campaign.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reported that the campaign’s original plans to use the Albuquerque Convention Center were dashed, due in part to an unpaid bill of nearly $445,000 from a 2019 rally.

If you’re not going to pay your bills, we’re just not going to entertain you using city facilities, and that’s the way it should be,” Albuquerque mayor Tim Keller told the outlet.

Finally. I was wondering if/when this might happen.

[-] slingstone@lemmy.world 22 points 18 hours ago

Shouldn't Donnie T. just be able to cut them a check since he's so fabulously wealthy? I mean, he says he's ultra rich and the best businessman ever, so this ought to be something he can just immediately address, right?

[-] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 8 points 18 hours ago

I wouldn't trust that check. Cash or money order only

[-] IphtashuFitz@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

Personally I wouldn’t trust any sort of payment from that guy. I’d accept payment but still refuse new business from him until about 6 weeks after payment is received. That should provide ample time to verify the check doesn’t bounce, etc.

[-] Classy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 17 hours ago

That would be a fat stack of money orders

It's worse than just not paying the bills, they're trying to pass off the costs to the Federal Government.

The Trump campaign claimed in a statement to Public Integrity last year that it was not responsible for the costs to cities, arguing that "all billing inquiries should go to the Secret Service." But Secret Service officials said they "receive no funding from Congress to reimburse municipal governments for the local public safety protection they request," according to the report.

I have always failed to see why people view Donald Trump as anything other than a con man.

Because of racism.

If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.

I have always failed to see why people view Donald Trump as anything other than a con man.

They're either rubes who are indoctrinated into the reactionary cinematic universe or grifters who pretend he's authentic to exploit the gullible.

Rubes don't see con men for what they are.

Just throw it on the pile labelled "this should be disqualifying for a presidential candidate but it apparently isn't, Jesus shitting christ I don't even know what's going on any more."

[-] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 10 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

I don't know why anybody still rents venues to this deadbeat unless they're drinking his koolaid or expect concessions to make up his unpaid bill.

For a billionaire, he sure asks for a lot of handouts.

[-] MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world 39 points 1 day ago

Billionaires are the biggest "welfare queens" out there. Everything they have is stolen or a handout.

[-] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 11 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

"I'll just do fuck all and charge everyone alive for it", that's the billionaire way

[-] neanderthal@lemmy.world 52 points 1 day ago

455,000 is 0.0455% of 1,000,000,000. Not a big deal to someone with allegedly multiple billions.

I'm creeping up an a million net worth. That is like me trying to stiff someone for 455 dollars. An unexpected 455 dollar expense is a tiny bit annoying. This wasn't even an unexpected expense. This is like me stiffing the guy I paid to power wash my house and complaining he won't come back next time. The city should sue. 455k is worth the lawsuit in my opinion. Plus damages since the cost likely prevented the city from doing other important things.

This is bigly sad.

[-] zephorah@lemm.ee 30 points 1 day ago

Mark Cuban has been addressing this with logic. You only sell gold sneakers and shitty coins when you need the money.

[-] dhork@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

The city should have sued on Jan 21, 2020. If they sue now, and Trump wins the election, they would never see a dime because the SC would make sure to squash all lawsuits. Selling it to a debt collector was probably the best move for them. They only see a fraction of what they are owes, but its better than nothing

[-] Gerudo@lemm.ee 5 points 22 hours ago

What debt collector would be stupid enough to try and get repayment from Trump.

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago

I'd watch that episode of dog the bounty hunter. Though I'd probably go in to it expecting disappointment.

Alternatively, they could put a lien on his properties.

[-] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 18 points 1 day ago

At this point I really think that he does need all the cash he can find.

That said, even when he was still flush he was notorious for stiffing the little guy.

He's hated in Atlantic City because he ripped off so many small businesses.

It's him playing mobster; the Mafia never pays for anything, so why should he?

[-] jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world 4 points 18 hours ago

That's how they get their billions.

And lots of creative theft.

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 24 points 21 hours ago

Literally everything he touches turns to shit. He's got the anus touch.

[-] thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works 19 points 19 hours ago

He's got that Mierdas Touch.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Hi-oooooooo!

[-] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.world 17 points 23 hours ago

No sympathy for suckers who don't bill Trump up front. None. They knew what this was.

[-] Kbobabob@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

Wait, do you think the venue wants sympathy?

[-] adespoton@lemmy.ca 1 points 13 hours ago

I’m pretty sure the venue is keeping that bill open specifically so that Trump can never return.

[-] Ioughttamow@fedia.io 25 points 1 day ago

So couldn’t this successful, stable businessman not just pay that bill? Hmm

[-] just_another_person@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

FINALLY. I hope he gets sued into oblivion after all this bullshit.

[-] Linktank@lemmy.today 3 points 21 hours ago

This is why he doesn't want to run again.

[-] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 2 points 23 hours ago

I hope this means he won't have the means to do another attempt.
