The paper, in a very funny but serious way, makes a strong case for the relative uselessness of the index finger, and it's recommendation for amputation if it's at all damaged and impeding existence.

Another way to say this is strive for functional restoration of the hand and avoid the pitfalls of your own ego trip in which useless and burdensome parts are saved to the detriment of function.

Great conclusion actually.
