I got interested after I saw Jotaro mention it in JoJo's Bizzare Adventure Part 3.

This show is a timeless gem. I really liked first 3 or so episodes, but the "car exhaust" monologue at the end of maybe the fourth episode made me fall in love with Columbo.

Please watch it if you haven't yet. If it's your type of show, you're missing out big time.

And one other thing: I'm only on episode 5 so please spare me some spoilers in the comments 😅

Columbo is so good. It has valuable life lessons, such as "you absolutely left a ton of evidence of your crimes you idiot" and, "Rich people should be devoured at scale, swallowed whole" which, fair enough, isn;t something you need to just learn from columbo but also columbo is great

a) loves his wife back when that was essentially illegal on television b) really sweet to normal people c) absolute fae demon freak to wealthy people used to getting away with crimes

watch the show

In one of the earlier episodes the character just lets himself into the kitchen of a newly widowed woman and starts cooking for her while comforting her.

Pretty radical take on a law and order character for the time.

They also made a point of never casting a black person as a criminal, to avoid reenforcing prevalent stereotypes.

It's far from flawless but it is very heartfelt at trying to portray a gentler image of a detective show.

Just started watching it due to this, and saw that episode - it was so nice! She was basically being harassed by the Serious Cops who have no time for Silly Emotions like grief and pushed out of the room to let them do Serious Work, and he catches up and actually listens and shows care and has her smiling a bit by being an earnest and harmless lil' guy who makes a mean omelette.

...probably a good thing I didn't watch this when I was younger, or I might have assimilated a lot of this character. Hmm, might not have appreciated it as much back then though.

Columbo asks the hard truths, like "what if poly people are evil?"

[-] sunshine@lemmy.ml 12 points 2 weeks ago

There's a lot of storylines about this in Robert B. Parker's (otherwise delightful) novels lol. Embarrassing.

Yeah but in columbo all the villains are smug rich white people who expect to get away with it because the law and society are usually on their side. Then columbo comes in and they get fucked.

It's so far from reality it doesn't really work as propaganda for cops. It's basically a Robin Hood story. Shit most of the cops aside from columbo are fawning idiots.

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago

I like to think he just has a fake badge and everyone just kinda believes he's a cop. He's just a fellah that enjoys chilli and bringing down smug rich guys

[-] OrganisationLeader@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

Can't stand coppaganda but in this case suspension of disbelief works.

Plenty (not yet) famous characters in there too. Martin Sheen, William Shatner, Jeff Goldblum,...

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

You can kinda tell watching it. It's got proto Spielberg shots

[-] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 13 points 2 weeks ago

is it pretty easy to find on the high seas?

[-] maliciousonion@lemmy.ml 11 points 2 weeks ago

Yes, that's the most convenient and easy way.

[-] maliciousonion@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 weeks ago

Really? I can't find any full episodes on YouTube, it's just clips.

[-] Carcharodonna@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I put the first ep (directed by Spielberg) on tankie tube awhile back for anyone who hasn’t seen it: https://tankie.tube/w/sAzge15bcQ8pNYKVgE3nkW I could upload more if anyone is interested.

[-] maliciousonion@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 weeks ago

I don't think that's episode 1.

There were two episodes before it; one of them was named "Ransom for a dead man"

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago

It was the first episode of season 1 production. Prescription Murder was a stage play adopted for TV and was meant to be a one off but was really popular and then Ransom for a Dead Man was a pilot episode which was popular so then they went into full production. They're sorta season 0

[-] Swoosegoose@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

I think the Spielberg episode was the first episode of season 1, and the very first episode was a TV movie and the second episode was the pilot but not actually part of season 1. It's something confusing like that

[-] Thordros@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

I need more peeeeeeers! It keeps stalling!

Peter Falk had some great takes on Columbo. For instance, he thought Columbo was just making up stories about his wife until season 3.

When they thought about giving Columbo a dog, Falk was against it. Until they brought in the dog. Then Falk agreed Columbo should have a dog.

Johnny Cash too

[-] Thordros@hexbear.net 10 points 2 weeks ago

And, one more thing: this show is what inspired the Phoenix Wright series of games.

[-] AnarchoCummunist@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

Oh that's interesting. Kinda how Star Wars inspired a lot of Final Fantasy titles. And of course, D&D had a huge hand early on.

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 9 points 2 weeks ago

I'm near the end of season 2 now and completely concur. Columbo rules

[-] someone@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago

Question: Peter Falk had a glass eye, but does Columbo?

[-] axont@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago

There's one episode where Columbo makes an offhand comment about him and another cop having "three eyes open" when looking out for clues, so maybe

Anyone else want to have a new movie night show??

We can watch the greatest crime drama TV show ever made. One that—along with Hasidic Jewish Dad Music—became a pillar of Japanese gaming culture forever?

[-] someone@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

That would be awesome.

[-] Carcharodonna@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago

Columbo nights when???

[-] imogen_underscore@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago

yeah columbo slaps. very charming and entertaining, Peter Falk was one of the best around. the only annoyance is Plex is really bad at finding subtitles that work for it cause i guess it's relatively a kinda obscure thing to be watching

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

Is and isn't. Anyone over 10 years older than me remembers catching random episodes on TV as a kid and really liking it.

[-] imogen_underscore@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

yeah i mean it's well known for sure just not the kind of thing every other person has in their torrents so finding subs is kinda hard

So fucking good. My wife got me into it. Apparently it was/is super popular in Japan. I love the episode starring Johnny Cash.

[-] SteamedHamberder@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

One of my favorite Twilight Zone eps. Is where Peter Falk plays a Fidel Castro stand in

[-] Praxinoscope@lemm.ee 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I've never watched Columbo, but heard that Poker Face is inspired by it. Decent show, give it a try

Thank you for posting this! I used to watch the occasional episode when they would rerun. I certainly know who Peter Falk is.

So thanks to this post i decided to start from the beginning and it has been fun.

By the way: In episode 1, Columbo and the doctor have a drink in the doctors office. This isn't a spoiler. If you have seen it, that is an ice bucket. Does someone come in and change the ice during the day before it melts?
