I can't quite put my finger on why, but I wasn't as big a fan of the first one. I played through it, it had its moments like "french?! I can't fucking read french!"

Maybe cause they got shafted with the advertising and IGN calling it "the Bethesda-killer" and "Fallout in space."

I did a written review of it a while ago, and my conclusion was that a lot of the gameplay was serviceable but not particularly standout, which made it feel a bit bland. There were a number of small things that piled up, with one example being that any time you told a companion to special attack you had to sit through a short cutscene. It had great writing and characters, which makes it the first game I'd reccomend in spite of the so so gameplay, because I thought the character and world stuff was so strong.

While I didn't have expectations, I think the marketing also greatly mislead other people. The game is structured like a classic BioWare RPG, rather than a modern Fallout game. I also found the marketing connection with Fallout New Vegas to be misleading because there was no connection of actual lead development staff with those games, but instead it was with Fallout 1 and 2. If you know that, and are familiar with the writing and design habits you can feel that difference. Some people may have felt it and been confused or disappointed that it didn't have the New Vegas vibe.

I honestly found it refreshing and approachable compared to "Bethesda" like games. It played a bit more like KOTOR with a spread of worlds/biomes to explore in a more tailored and purposeful manner.

Sometimes the fully open world games end up feeling too barren and shallow. But that's also what I liked about the first Rage and that was generally panned too :(

The first one was absolutely a game. Definitely need a discount to pick up the second one.

I read outer wilds at first and I couldn't be more dissapointed right now. :(

The Outer Worlds is brilliant, no need to be disappointed.

Not my type of game sadly, I'm sure it's good though if you're into those sorta games

Sadly, I think that whole team quit recently

[-] Visstix@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Do you mean the Annapurna publisher?

[-] Vince@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Ah, I hadn't realized that distinction, hopefully the devs arent affected too much

My mistake, the publishes quit, but the devs are still working

I see, thank you for the update!

How could you improve something that is already perfect?

Anyways, outer worlds is also awesome, still a win

Wish it would come to GOG.

I guess eventually...

Not sure if the IP is still owned by WB, but if so it'll never happen. Warner Bros are awful about not fucking over the users.

[-] stoy@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 week ago

The Outer Worlds 1 is already on GOG.

Well I suppose that answers that. They got picked up by Microsoft/Xbox Games, IP rights included, which is pretty kickass to hear. Hopefully Microsoft continues to be just middling evil towards their studios and obsidian can actually do what they're good at. Seems like they've had enough dev time on this / grounded that they might actually be allowed to, you know, make good content...

IIRC first came out during a big release season.

Ended up dropping it around monarch 20 ish hours in upon release.

Still need to pick it back up one of these days.
