Hi y'all.

I have been doing great at not drinking but not great at not smoking weed. It's making me really lazy and anti social and i know i'm better off without it so i'm quitting again dangit.

have done very well with eating clean and getting exercises in. My butt is growing and i couldn't be happier about this.

Have not cut down screen time and done projects mostly cuz of the weed i think. I have been able to spend more of the screen time reading at least so tiny w i guess.

This next week i'm going to use less cannabis and less phone. More salad and more squats.

positiveGym grind has been good. Topped the leaderboard for member visits in December. Hit full stack sets on everything in the hip station the other day, used to not be able to do that on abduction. Getting stronger, looking better, feeling better. Saw my mom today and she said she wished I took more "before" pics because she thought I look a lot healthier and happier and wished I had a better comparison (but I fuckin' hate taking pictures of myself) vivian-shrug hexbear-non-binary

Weight on the scale has fluctuated with water weight (creatine, spiro, dietary sodium) and food intake and today's weigh in was a step back but the overall trend has been positive. Hoping to hit some of my lofty goals before my next birthday. (BW bench, muscle up, dragon squats, etc)

negative, addiction, alcohol, nicotineDrinking and smoking have been terrible

Wanted to quit both for New Year's

Didn't manage that, slipped on both

Need to do better

Under a whole lot of stress but that shouldn't be an excuse

Maybe I'll reconfigure for Chinese New Year's but I'm disappointed in myself

nice job you're doing great even if you haven't made it quite where you want to be still very impressive!

[-] LocalOaf@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

I gotta do better with the addiction issues and mindfulness shit

I've been really stressed and on edge and losing my temper a lot more frequently than I usually do and it's concerning me tbh

Exercise stuff has been pretty much the main positive and pretty much everything else is kind of a mess right now

ah sorry i see what you're saying i didn't mean to be overly optimistic; for me the gym is really really tough so i see that as a big success. Addiction and the collateral issues really cast a shadow over everything though don't they.

I'm with you in this one comrade we can and will be our best selves.

Don't take it too hard on yourself, the year has just begun and there is plenty of time to make progress unity

My week has been dreadful and 2025 is off to a rocky start. k-pain Hopefully I'll be able to get back on track next week

[-] MoonElf@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

🫂 what's important is dusting ourselves off and trying again comrade. I believe in you!

[-] LGOrcStreetSamurai@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

You'll find your footing soon. I truly believe that we find opportunities and solutions when we look for them (within reason of course, you can't will your way out of global economic crisis, but you know what I mean). You'll find a rhythm soon enough.

[-] moonlake@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

Thank you comrade! unity

I just need to deal with some physical health stuff which is my main issue currently. I'm actively working on fixing it, so hopefully I'll be back on the horse soon solidarity

[-] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago

Pinned. Getting around to finally quitting vaping myself in the weeks ahead.

[-] MoonElf@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

that's a solid goal

This week was pretty good. I'm starting to get a groove going. I hit the gym, i drank a ton of water, i did lots of C++ and Godot Programming. I wrote a letter to a friend, an actual hand-written letter. My main goal is just maintain forward momentum at all cost. I think getting started is hardest part of self-improvement, getting that ball rolling is the hardest part, keeping it rolling is far easier. So I'm just going to focus on maintain forward momentum, and helping out others do the same.

[-] MoonElf@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

I like your goal. Good job on the w's!

[-] moonlake@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

Glad to hear your week was good! Writing letters is awesome, we should bring it back. Keep that ball rolling gustavo-brick-really-rollin

Like fr on my last bag of Takis, decided going forward gonna stick to carrots as a snack. Nutrition wise chips I'm finding out are a dead end so gonna be giving those up, still while I have this bag been learning portion size from it so that's something at least.

[-] moonlake@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

Dip those carrots in some hummus to make it a thousand times better greensicko-laser

[-] Wmill@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

Need just tahni to make some homemade hummus 😋

[-] Ath3ro@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago

Ooh i love carrots as a snack, that and grapes became my new go to snacks while high and i feel so much better. I usually will dip the carrots into hummus or bitchin sauce. I’m also still a takis fiend who will accidentally kill a whole bag in one sitting so i tried to buy only small bags to help limit my intake at one time but they kind of add up in price compared to buying a big bag. My solution to this though is to buy a big bag and immediately portion it out into those half sandwich size ziplock bags.

[-] Wmill@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago

I am curious what this bitchin sauce is ngl but rn I'm just eating them as is, was gonna get the baby carrots but the regular carrots cheaper. I've done the portioning out part before but eh I still have trouble resisting eating just a few. I know I got super lucky and managed to find the sweet dragon chili ones for 1 dollar but negative I know I shouldn't eat so many

[-] Ath3ro@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago

It’s so good, it’s almond based i think but it kind of reminds me of hummus in that it’s a little grainy (idk if that’s the right word) but they make a bunch of different flavors. I usually get the chipotle flavor, and i recently tried the spinach artichoke one and i liked that with chips but i haven’t had it with carrots since i had to cut back on my carrot intake because i turned a little orange, but don’t worry i was eating a bag every other day. I’ve seen it at most major grocery stores but costco and fred meyers have had it the cheapest.

[-] Wmill@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

I'll keep my eyes peeled for this sauce also I get you on the carrots, bulk store has like 25 lbs for 12 bucks so sort of tempted but I'll stick to my one dollar bags for now

I had family over for the holidays, and they've left yesterday. Hopefully I can get on my habits going on, I'll be tracking them on the app Dessalines developed, which works pretty well. This week I need to get going with job seeking asap, really sucks being broke and people saying they're not hiring til the end of the month at best.

[-] MoonElf@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

what's this app? good luck with the job hunt!

Here's Dessalines' post about it. It's very simple, with just the functionality needed to record your habits, and some encouragement for sticking to them.

[-] MoonElf@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

cool thank you!

[-] moonlake@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

I track all of my stuff in an app called Bearable. It's great because you can track sleep, energy, mood, supplements, activities, symptoms all in one place. And then you can correlate factors to see how they effect each other. It makes me motivated to do healthy habits because my gamer brain likes to see number go up felix-linus

Kinda chaos, I’m walking almost enough, ate some real food, got a little crazy with the coffee, but I’m just happy I’m still mostly in control. Forgot my laundry in the machine for an embarrassing amount of time.

[-] MoonElf@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

hey nice job! you're stacking up dubs don't feel too bad about the laundry that happens to everyone!

Self Improvement

315 readers
47 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.
