What is "happy?"

[-] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Kitten is letting me hold and pet her little head while she purred and purred and purred.

[-] Drusas@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago

Puppy cuddles

I got a new camera for my microscope!!! More detail on all the little fellas.

Just the dirt and water near me. Lots of fellas in there. You can check out some of my previous posts I've posted some videos.

My newest video uses the new camera.

[-] Lauchs@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

How the heck?!? So, are those sand microbes in a solution or something? They look like they're just floating from place to place...!

[-] pebbles@sh.itjust.works 1 points 19 hours ago

I can't really tell if they are inside or on top of the sand grains. The sand is from a reservoir near me, so all the little guys are in water. Water apparently feels more viscous the smaller you are.

[-] Lauchs@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

Neat, had no idea!

If you don't mind another dumb question, I looked at the backyard dirt ciliate, is that lil fella in water as well?

[-] rustyfish@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

After two years me and my girlfriend moved together last week. When I thought I couldn’t be happier, she bought us rotisserie chicken.

It was like a firework in my head.

[-] Lauchs@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Sounds like a keeper, congrats!

And goddamn, rotisserie chicken is so good.

[-] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago

Congratulations!! Sounds like an awesome week!

[-] Pipster@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 2 days ago

One week since I finally started HRT after years of misery and antidepressant induced apathy. Mind is clearer, I can see an actual future for myself not obscured by fog and had a few actual moments of genuine happiness.

I also came out to my one of my best friends who lives abroad and have struggled to stay in contact with, which not only rekindled our friendship but redefined it. They have been so instantly accepting of me and non-judgemental.

[-] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 days ago

My boss was away, so I got to work in peace all week! This happiness carried over to my free-time and I slept better.

Micromanagement sucks. But let's keep it positive: last week was nice!

[-] Lauchs@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

It's wild how much better work can be sans management.

I even basically like mine but life is so much easier when she's too busy to ask questions or offer input.

[-] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago

100%.. I like my boss too, but he doesn't understand that he is micromanaging me and that things end up taking longer. I don't think this is a personality issue only. I think it is lack of experience and knowledge about management.

[-] Lauchs@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I don't know about your organization but I'm a dev in a very large non profit and our managers rise through the dev ranks. Which sort of makes sense but is also kind of bizzare. "You're good at coding, why not organizing and managing people now?" Especially funny as most of my team are lovely people but social interactions are not my team's strong suit to put it mildly.

[-] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah the workers becoming managers is always a double edged sword in my experience. They understand the work, but there is deep value with management/leadership training (which they often don't have).

Ha I know exactly what you mean with social interactions not being the team's strongest suit!

I also work as a dev, but for an academic working group (not software or compsci).

That's all good, but I just want to do my job and leave work at work. I don't want to be contacted on my free-time. Academics don't understand this way of thinking.

[-] Lauchs@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah, the social thing cracks me up as I also work heavily with the events and comms team who are, as you might expect from their unit, fun and gregarious folks who genuinely enjoy each other so it's a bit of whiplash going from their meetings or social events to ours.

I wonder what proportion of lemmys are devs...

Ha, yeah for a lot of academics I feel their work is their life and they see no reason it shouldn't be yours too! I hope you're still able to carve out your own "fuck off n leave me alone" time!

[-] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

Hey I used to stay for coffee with the marketing team of my previous employer because they were more fun!! Lol glad to hear I wasn't the only person enjoying the comms people! I know exactly how you feel!

Probably a big portion of us, but I hope that it gets diversified. Love reading about other fields as well and enjoy looking at posts from !machinist@sh.itjust.works too on top of dev work :)

Thankfully I can, they haven't yet followed me home ;) hope you are enjoying your work environment as well apart from micromanaging and socially awkward devs!

[-] Lauchs@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Ha, fully agree, glad to hear I'm not the only dev who enjoys the other teams! (Sometimes I'm not so sure... Like, when I had to lead a training about getting project requirements that basically boiled down to "have you tried asking people questions?" the answer to which was a resounding "No. They wrote down what they wanted, why would I ask about it? If they meant something else, they should write that."

Oh dang, thanks for the machinist community, that looks super cool. Love seeing the stuff people can build, such a refreshing change from our intangible but ridiculously complex projects. "Oh, so you got some numbers to show there? Okay." "No but those numbers are really tricky and... Yes. I just got some numbers to show there." Another dev buddy and I worked on his cabin during the summer and though the work was hard and sweaty my God was it rewarding.

Absolutely love my work environment, even if I spend too much of it on here... Hope you do too!

[-] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

Glad I'm often not the one gathering the initial requirements lol!

Absolutely, love to see something more physical being made and solving physical problems too! And working on a cabin is bliss if you have a good weather! I bet it was rewarding at the end :)

And yes to both: I do like my work as well and also spend too much time here while being there!

[-] Lauchs@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Oh man, I love the initial req stage. Partially because of friends on the other teams but also I get to nudge the project to where I think it should go. Or away from unfunness.

You are 100% right about the cabin. Here's me on our newly built deck, beer in hand and half ready to leap to safety at the first suspicious creak:

[-] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago

That is indeed nice. I don't get a much of a say in my current job so that's why I prefer not to be part of the requirements defining. I just tell them what is possible and within what time frame when they finally come up with their final master plan that they want to define themselves (maybe I'm just communicating wrong with academic people still).

Now that looks like bliss! Perfect weather, beer, cabin in the nature, and a day full of hard work behind. And hey, the captain must sink with their ship ;) Thanks for sharing!

[-] Lauchs@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

I suppose in a job with academics they have pretty precise experiment goals etc, so probably less open to suggestions. I don't know what research y'all are doing but I'd have very little to offer on most scientific subjects!

Was talking to a soccer buddy last night (another dev, apparemtly everyone is a dev this week) and he's been applying to jobs where he'd be supporting academics, any suggestions or hints for an interview and/or beyond?

And yeah, you're right, despite the sunburns, aches and fear of death it really was bliss. I got my pal 50 feet of mosquito net for Christmas, we're going to try and engineer something wild to protect ourselves on the deck at night...!

[-] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 1 points 19 hours ago

I've learned that yeah, and me too, especially since it's not what I studied and I can't really give any input on research methods - they are a research group in Spatial Data Science and I'm constantly learning new stuff that's not directly related to my work. I was hired to build and maintain software tools for their own research and help with code architecture of their own creations. I just love learning so perfect job for me!

It's a good profession to have! ;) and I wish I could give some solid tips, but this is my first job in the academics and I ended up here by accident. I do know something though: he should not settle for public job postings only. Universities consist of multiple research working groups and many of the working groups just wait until someone who knows software well enough rolls into their team or pay a company to do the job.

Before me for past 20 years they got software devs by either someone walking in and asking if they need a freelancer or if a PhD student had previous studies/experience in software. Apparently they had never posted this job online.

Recently I got another offer from a different working group at a different university, and only because one of their employees had worked with me a year before and knew me. There was np job posting for this position either.

Maybe your buddy already knows all of that about university working groups, but thought that this might be useful info. I work in Europe but academics seem to be the same no matter where lol.

And good luck with the fight against mosquitoes! Those assholes...

[-] Lauchs@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

That does sound like a pretty rocking job! And it sounds like you're the only dev, so at the very least you get 100% autonomy in how to solve the problem put before you!

Those are actually really helpful bits of advice. My work is actually at a University (nowhere near the academics though) but I imagine I know enough people who know people that it'd be worth asking about research groups that may need devs. Hadn't even oxcured to me, I just assumed all groups would put up job postings so if neither interview goes his way, I'll round up the usual suspects...!

Much appreciated!

[-] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 1 points 9 hours ago

Better than my last one! Lol. And yes the amount of freedom I have to solve the problems is quite nice!

Glad I could give something useful. And oh, then you are indeed in a good position to ask around! Who knows, maybe there is a job right around the corner lol. And yeah I would have assumed the same...

[-] Lauchs@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Saw some old friends and we went out for fancy pizza, at a presumably instagram famous place given the line/ages etc. But, with 4 old friends, laughing and catching up in line was still a great time!

Also played a few games of soccer, two where I felt like the old man I pretend not to be but two felt really good.

And the weather forecast is finally calling for snow on our local ski hills so I'm going to take a morning off and if the weather holds, a full day for a better mountain farther away.

Oh, and finally listened to a buddy and started Severance, holy hell that show is great! Anyone else watched/watching? (Please no spoilers, I just started!)

[-] 1984@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago

Severance is amazing. I'm waiting for the full season 2 to be out before I watch the second season though, since I don't like waiting a week between episodes.

[-] Lauchs@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

I just finished season 1... HOW ON EARTH ARE YOU STILL WAITING? I finished last night and have been waiting for this interminable workday to end so I can find out how all the craziness unfolded.

[-] 1984@lemmy.today 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

Yeah it's not easy to wait honestly. Trying to find other shows but a lot of the other stuff is dogshit. :)

I think season 2 is probably not as good as season 1 too, it's impossible.

[-] Lauchs@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Ha, yeah I'm torn on waiting. On the one hand, there is something lovely about savouring a show and pondering what's coming/happened but on the other hand I want to know right goddamn now!

RULES (updated 01/22/25)

  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling. To be concise, disrespect is defined by escalation.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible. You won't be punished for trying.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (politics or societal debates come to mind, though we are not saying not to talk about anything that resembles these). There's a guide in the protocol book offered as a mod model that can be used for that; it's vague until you realize it was made for things like the rule in question. At least four purple answers must apply to a "controversial" message for it to be allowed.
  4. Keep it clean and SFW: No illegal content or anything gross and inappropriate. A rule of thumb is if a recording of a conversation put on another platform would get someone a COPPA violation response, that exact exchange should be avoided when possible.
  5. No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc. The chart redirected to above applies to spam material as well, which is one of the reasons its wording is vague, as it applies to a few things. Again, a "spammy" message must be applicable to four purple answers before it's allowed.
  6. Respect privacy as well as truth: Don’t ask for or share any personal information or slander anyone. A rule of thumb is if something is enough info to go by that it "would be a copyright violation if the info was art" as another group put it, or that it alone can be used to narrow someone down to 150 physical humans (Dunbar's Number) or less, it's considered an excess breach of privacy. Slander is defined by intentional utilitarian misguidance at the expense (positive or negative) of a sentient entity. This often links back to or mixes with rule one, which implies, for example, that even something that is true can still amount to what slander is trying to achieve, and that will be looked down upon.
