I must stress this has nothing to do with being boring, what I'm interestedare folks who lulllyou to sleep through the smoothness and flow and safety you feel from their sustained speech independant from their content.

  1. If you had to pinpoint, what about their voice or schtick makes them so hypnotic...?

Maybe this is too obvious, but I'm surprised no one has said Joe Pera yet.

Sebastian Lague does graphics/interactive programming with a good dose of poetry and has a very soothing voice. Some of his videos are absolutely fabulous

Matt O'Dowd on PBS Spacetime

The narrator from Fall of Civilization is very relaxing to listen to

[-] Skua@kbin.earth 2 points 6 days ago

Yeah good call. I kinda forget he exists and then once every six months he pops up to deliver three hours of perfect storytelling

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 6 days ago

Seconded. It’s a very soothing show for being distracted enough to doze off.

For me, it's always been Phoebe Judge from the podcast Criminal.

What is it about TrueCrime^TM^ that is so hypnotic as class? So weird, Law and Order used to be my Ambien haha

Drew Ackerman from the Sleep With Me podcast. This is in direct defiance of your post, though. He self describes as the world's most boring person.

Stuff You Should Know podcast with Josh and Chuck. They do interesting talks, but their voices make me sleepy.

Also Joe Ressingtons voice from a variety of the Late Night Linux group of podcasts. Just good vocal tone, and British accent, as well as they make super clean studio audio. https://latenightlinux.com/

VaatiVidya (FromSoft game lore videos) and Voices of the Past (narration of primary historical sources) for sure.

In Deep Geek on YouTube. Content on LotR, SoIaF, and other fantasy. He's also read some stories as Audio books.

My bedtime listening ❤️

Art Bell. His voice is just buttery silk, the content is batshit crazy, and it was always a late-night show.

[-] DirigibleProtein@aussie.zone 4 points 6 days ago

John Hopkins on Short History Of has the most beautiful soothing voice.

[-] qprimed@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 days ago

Sean Caroll - intonation and cadence. [subject matter awesome. must. stay. awake]

Amazed nobody beat me to Astrum. Fantastic overviews of space missions, planetary bodies, etc. Perfect to drift off to sleep with. Unfortunately I think he's running out of things to cover so the content machine has pushed him towards pop sci astronomy. Thoroughly recommend checking out the channel playlists though.

RIP Baumiandcats

He's still alive but stopped making my comfort content. I'll probably get into his MTG stuff at some point but I'm still recovering from him stopping playing Dota. I watched him play Dota almost my whole life

Not really answering your exact question, but it’s a tie between Sleep Book and Go the Fuck to Sleep.
