Is there an actual reason behind it?

I heared it is that way so you dont see the dirt on the chairs

I also heard a claim that such patterns can (marginally) discourage graffiti of the seats. And if branding is a thing you care about, they can reflect some parts of that. London S-Stock trains' seats point to the lines where they run, and there have been Danish trains that straight up feature the old DSB logo in the seat pattern.

Exactly this

"We need a design that obscures ketchup, vomit, and shit stains"

"Absolutely on it, sir"

It was scientifically proven that the squiggly lines make the seat seem cleaner than it actually is.*

*Or not.

The only pattern that can seemlessly integrate vomit, yoghurt, chocolate and bubblegum into itself and look completely unchanged afterwards.

That's why hotel carpets have similar godawful patterns. You can't spot the stains.

Hey now, be careful about what heresy you speak; the Dragon-Con Cult of the Marriott Carpet doesn't fuck around!

Do you have some context on this, please ? I am curious.

It is legitimately a significant thing. At last year's con, I'm sure I saw at least hundreds of people doing carpet-patterned cosplay.

Also, here's a video of a recent Dragon-Con parade. The carpet cult section starts at about 24 minutes in: https://youtu.be/_ft9AEq5GuA?t=1440

(There's one Deadpool/Marriott Carpet/inflatable T-Rex cosplayer who decided to march with the preceding Deadpool group, LOL.)

Thanks for this lore from over th world. That was a good read and the dragon con I funny. That the kind of thing you don need yo know but you will remember XD

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

That's just a patch of carpet.

[-] DandomRude@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

Yup. Just imagine what the seats would look like if they were white. Probably also a graffiti pattern, but an extremely unpleasant one...

Wasn't this just to make grafittis on the seats invisible enough to deter~~mine~~ potential teenage artists?

[-] Dirk@lemmy.ml 14 points 2 days ago

Exactly. That was never an aesthetic choice.

[-] BananaTrifleViolin@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

Graffiti free is an aesthetic choice.

I've never seen Hiimdaisy art besides the P4 comic that never got finished, wow.

This artist is named Gigi D.G. apparently, but their webcomic is called Hiimdaisy, and they did a silly Persona 4 webcomic years ago that people like me still quote to this day. It got a comic dub on Youtube by a channel named Sapphire. I can immediately tell by the artstyle that it's them.

They have a TV Tropes page.
