I wonder what made NK not allow him to stay?

Just speculating but they probably don't want to start a pointless diplomatic incident over someone with no actual intel and who was probably on the run for doing typical sexpat/soldier in occupied Korea shit.

Ah that would make sense.

Unless they can vet him properly, there's always the risk that he's a fake defector for intelligence gathering.

Rare DPRK L

In all seriousness, yeah there was probably a reason.

His story is that he wanted to defect because of racism in his unit, and the official story is that he was jailed in South Korea for assault and is facing military charges for it.

To be perfectly honest I don't see any reason to believe the former unless the latter is thoroughly debunked, as we all know that harrassing (or worse) the locals is a favorite hobby of US troops stationed on foreign bases.

Unless this was a staged thing by the US, I cannot see this ending well for the soldier in any way.

If he starts hanging out with wealthy north Korean émigrés, Biden better not go to Dallas in November

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --
