What's reddit?

[-] OmegaLemmy@discuss.online 4 points 20 hours ago

Definitely subreddits like programming or help or something where you can essentially ransom answers for money

[-] Brotha_Jaufrey@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

Reedit, is that a copy of Lemmy or something?

[-] multifariace@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Nah. That was the classical period of the internet with great leaps in learning and creativity. Now it is the middle ages where capitalism/feudalism wrecked all sense of community.

[-] Sauvandu60@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 day ago

The entire reddit should be paywalled with very high price.

[-] menemen@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 day ago

How can they justify unpaid mods when the sub is paid?

[-] shaggyb@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago
[-] ThomasCrappersGhost@feddit.uk 6 points 1 day ago

It’s funny to watch it destroy itself.

I can't find a link, but I saw an article the other day that said /r/assholedesign was going to be one of the first in protest of the move.

There's not a single subreddit I will pay to visit, there's also not one I would have paid to visit in the past. Fuck Spez, fuck Musk, and fuck censorship...

I didnt even bother installing their stupid mobile appbto seeNSFW content

[-] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 3 points 1 day ago

You can use your browser's desktop mode to avoid the whole app thing. Works best with "old.reddit"

[-] Ledericas@lemm.ee 7 points 2 days ago

thier app just datamines you harder. apparently they have additional priveleges that can easily identify your device to ban you more easily

[-] BCsven@lemmy.ca 46 points 2 days ago

Who cares really. Bring the content to Lemmy.

[-] ImplyingImplications@lemmy.ca 37 points 2 days ago

The porn. Right now the porn subreddits are mostly advertising for subscription sites like OnlyFans, Fansly, Patreon, etc. Reddit definitely thinks they can stop being used to advertise subscription sites and just become one themselves.

[-] dRLY@lemmy.ml 3 points 11 hours ago

That one is what I thought of too. But I wonder what extra issues it would cause. If they are profiting off people uploading things that they don't have the rights to (which I would imagine is still most of it), then it seems like it would be easier to go after reddit itself. Though I am only guessing and don't know actual laws. The other issue is that porn is the thing that main stream sites that like to act like they are "clean" go after first. Which would mean a possible second mass exodus of users/traffic. Just like Verizon found out real fast when they tried to "clean up" Tumblr. Though I would guess reddit does have enough non-NSFW users and content to weather it much better.

Being fully transparent, I really only ever spend time on reddit when looking for such content since it is much safer from malware ads and fake links. Also better categorized for really specific interests with 4chan levels of daily users posting. Aside from that, I imagine that I will also be impacted by so many old threads that happen to have randomly crucial answers to very specific tech or misc (non-NSFW) problems I am dealing with. It is already very frustrating to get hit with their "You look sus and IP will be banned unless you sign in" warning screen if I happen to be not signed in and having all the ad/tracking blocking extensions and a VPN turned on.

[-] tias@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 2 days ago

But there is so much free porn on the internet already

[-] markinov@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 2 days ago

Still onlyfans exists.

[-] junkthief@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago

Have you tried asking on Reddit? Or searching the internet? Why are you posting this as a question on asklemmy? This seems like one of the worst ways to get that information

[-] Hazelnutcookiez@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

No existing subreddits will be affected by this according to the post I read when this news was first announced, so unless something changed...no current sub will be paywalled.

But it'll probably be something stupid like a crypto bro sub and porn.

[-] DemBoSain@midwest.social 35 points 2 days ago

They will start with the porn. That's where they'll get the least pushback. Then it will spread to all NSFW subreddits.

[-] TabbsTheBat@pawb.social 25 points 2 days ago

I dunno, have you tried asking reddit?

[-] Bell@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago
[-] christian@lemmy.ml 21 points 2 days ago

I login to lemmy often enough that I would notice. Lemmy grew a lot overnight the last time reddit pissed off a lot of their userbase with one decision. There's good and bad to that, it was nice to see this place grow, but it became much less friendly when redditors flocked here. I'd expect more of that.

[-] Allero@lemmy.today 5 points 2 days ago

Interestingly, often times it was the old users who were the most toxic as a result of this, aggressively citing Eternal September and going elitist.

So, we can do a lot to prepare on our end.

[-] Naich@lemmings.world 11 points 2 days ago

/r/conservative because they are so gullible?

[-] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago

The goal is to indoctrinate people 10-30 with these values so if anything, it will be promoted to the front page more often and free. More eyes= more conversions.

[-] morrowind@lemmy.ml 11 points 2 days ago

Private subs for celebrities probably

[-] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

The porn, probably.

[-] Tm12@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago

Reddit is already paywalled with your privacy.

[-] Ledericas@lemm.ee 5 points 2 days ago

r/politics, r/news, and any adjacent subs that post similar content. because these 2 types of subs are the major engagement in reddit. followed by r/pics, funny, askreddit. bots make up half of the comments on reddit too.

[-] HowAbt2morrow@futurology.today 4 points 2 days ago
[-] Skellysgirl@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago

I would pay not to see that sub. Joking wouldn’t pay a penny to Reddit. Why would anyone.
