Some lucky people have no idea how impossible it can be to function when you're sick and medicated. And it's long overdue to scrap the TV license.

Read this directly after the story about a 24 year old cracker who got away with removed a girl because he's "young and talented." doomjak

I hate this world.

I know there's that saying "Don't let injustice sadden you, let it radicalise you," but this world is so completely unjust and there is such an overwhelming amount of awfulness that I feel completely beaten down by it.

Ones a victimless crime really. One has ruined someone’s life. Wow.

I honestly thought the tv license thing was a meme. And to learn this is being used to aid in social murder is a little hard to wrap my head around.

It is mostly a meme, but when they do enforce it, they're heat seeking missiles for the most vulnerable people. It's like the opposite of a lottery, except the most affected are still somehow the proles.

TV licenses are very much real. I read that one quarter of the women who are in prison in the UK, are in there for not paying their TV license.

what the fuck

TV license enforcement agents don’t have a “staying alive” license.

[-] SootySootySoot@hexbear.net 4 points 1 year ago

This isn't true. Most years there are 0 people in jail for not paying their TV license.

TV license as it stands only exists to prop up the enterprise of thugs that go round bullying vulnerable people. Oh and the criminal paper waste for sending out the threat letters that I get like every 2 weeks "are you in on the 24th we're coming for you". Not that they've ever sent anyone I imagine they specifically target people they know they can coerce.

Like if the charge is kept just roll it into the fucking cable subscription cost??? Make it subscription on the bbc website???????? It literally is just to keep the thugs for hire company going. Oh and the irony being the cost of sending out someone to do this and prosecute probably costs more than the fucking license does

As always, the money isn't really the point. Like over here where they periodically spend around 10 million AUD cracking down on "dole bludgers" (puke), arguably managing to "save" a few hundred K each time. But it's Money Well Spent, because it stops Those Undeserving Poors from Getting Something They Don't Deserve. Just don't ask about Twiggy Forrest, Clive Palmer, or Gina Rhinehart, who obviously Earned Every Penny. Ultimately, it's about destroying class solidarity, making the less emiserated workers feel like they have more in common with the capitalists than with the poor.

Also do people even watch TV anymore?? The aggressive way they've used threats the last decade or so has felt like the dying screeches of a dinosaur.

No cable is on its way out but that's why labour want to extend it to online steaming that's not just iplayer lmao

Given they have zero legal right to enter your home, they will also only have found evidence by lying and deceiving this woman into letting them inside, too.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
