After Brexit, I'm not so sure the problem is who can Britain trust, but rather who can trust Britain.

[-] palordrolap@fedia.io 27 points 1 year ago

It may be worth noting that this is in The Telegraph, occasionally referred to as "The Torygraph", a nickname earned for being the slightly less rabid, but still very much right-leaning newspaper. "Tory" being used in the pejorative sense.

In that newspaper, the thought of the UK being untrustworthy or that Brexit was a bad idea must be carefully skirted at all costs. Then again, that seems to be government policy no matter who the government is these days.

"Tory" being used in the pejorative sense.

There is only one way to use that word: perjoratively.

This is the way.

Lol, they only trust what used to be their colonies.

[-] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 15 points 1 year ago

Their colonies is a much longer list with a lot of nations with good reason to hate them. These are the ones where the colonizers maintained majorities over the indigenous peoples. They never even rejected the monarchy.

Crazy that none of them is from Europe.

[-] Naich@lemmings.world 25 points 1 year ago

Because it's the Torygraph and they are a bunch of Brexit arseholes.

[-] JackDark@lemmy.world 20 points 1 year ago

It's because all three are part of the Commonwealth.

[-] brezel@piefed.social 11 points 1 year ago

Well, that arricle seems to be from 1939.

Can we get Turks&Caicos in there? We'd love them to join us, but we wouldn't want to dangle it like some economic prize.

Poor New Zealand always being ignored.

[-] Artyom@lemm.ee 0 points 1 year ago

Good thing they didn't say Fr*nce!

[-] joyjoy@lemm.ee 27 points 1 year ago

The 3 countries:

  • England
  • Scotland
  • Wales
[-] tacosanonymous@lemm.ee 23 points 1 year ago

There’s no way England made that list.

[-] InvertedParallax@lemm.ee 11 points 1 year ago

Fuck northern Ireland apparently.

[-] Sawzall@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 1 year ago

I thought it would be France.

This is all fluff. We are militarily so entwined with Britain you'll suck our dick and say thank you.

Today?

I like the idea of closer ties with Canada and the UK, we already have very close ties with Aus.

[-] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

As a Canadian, free migration, even just to live in NZ for a couple years, sounds like a dream.

[-] absGeekNZ@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

Welcome, and bring the syrup.

I would look to expand it to other countries in the future, in an EU style free movement of citizens type of arrangement.

[-] 52fighters@lemmy.sdf.org 11 points 1 year ago

The UK might not be able to trust the US but they should be taking advantage of current events to leverage their relatively better trading position, compared to most other nations, to score some solid economic gains. Trump is likely to overlook the UK because the Pound isn't a threat to Dollar supremacy like the Euro.

[-] ikidd@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Britain doesn't even trust Britons.

[-] InvertedParallax@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago
