NGL Kung Fu Hustle kills me every single time, and has only gotten better as I've gotten older and understood more of the references. One of very few movies that successfully pull off the feeling of a live action cartoon.

Red Detachment of Women, Touch of Sin, Black Coal Thin Ice, Nanjing Nanjing, Chunking Express, The Eight Hundred, Suzhou River, Chang'an, Ascension, Battle of Lake Changjin 1&2

Could probably give specific genre recommendations if anyone wants.

Criterion channel just added a playlist of Chinese crime dramas, watched some of those and they were all good, Chonquing Hot Pot my favorite so far

Either 'God of Gamblers' or 'Infernal Affairs'. Both are HK flicks.

First is an 80s comedy, second is what 'The Departed' is a remake of.

Creation of the Gods was awesome, IMO.

According to Wikipedia, it's "the most ambitious and expensive Chinese production ever made." If you like epic fantasy like LotR or GoT, then you should definitely give this movie a try.

The second in the trilogy came out in January, but I haven't had time to watch yet. Looking forward to it though!

Does HK count? In The Mood For Love.

[-] ocean@lemmy.selfhostcat.com 2 points 2 days ago

I personally would say that depends. Today that counts as just Chinese but 70-90s that was definitely unique from Shanghai and Taiwan cinema

I don't know many, but there is a movie called Brotherhood of Blades that I've watched several times and really enjoy.
