This is a great perspective. I have definitely fallen into this meme’s sentiment many times. You have to remind yourself that it doesn’t matter.

Almost everything looks dumb on tv if you know what to look for. Almost everything related to guns, computers, or driving looks ridiculous and fake. It doesn’t stop them from doing it, nor does it stop people from enjoying the entertainment.

I think it’s natural that there should be a small collection of large, production-class instances that host the vast majority of users. The important point is that there are more than a few, and certainly more than one.

I also think it is important for instance admins to lay out their plan for how they intend to host and fund an instance if they intend to be production-class.

We also need some kind of account backup and migration tool so that if an instance goes down, those users can easily recover on another instance.

I have worked with most of these people at one point or another. I used to sit next to an old architect like walters. He had so many patents the company only recognize him on every 10th one.

It’s easy, you just step, step, step, step in, or wait, over, or, oops.

I think that universities are perfect for hosting instances (of Mastodon too). It would be a great teaching opportunity, and the cost seems like it would be negligible.

When I was a kid, our internet connection was actually hosted through the local university. It makes sense for them to participate in distributed platforms like this.

I really want to go and just try this thing. There’s no way I can afford it, but I hope they still let people try it.

I agree. Ultimately, I think there is a real chance that there ends up being 2 major fediverses. One that is federated with Meta, and one that is not.

I think that those joined to meta will ultimately become like the losers table in a school cafeteria. They can hear all of the conversations, but nobody will engage them. I’d rather be in the not-federated camp.

I think it’s a fallacy of our time that we have to be connected to all and get all content. Does it matter that some people are in a different but similar community? Do they need to be bridged?

Maybe this is something that an app can do. Like multi-reddits, just present multiple communities in a consolidated stream.

The one thing I would worry about is that a massive deluge of content from Meta would drown out anything else from Lemmy, and would effectively reduce Lemmy to just a client for interacting with Meta. Unless an individual could block Meta specifically (or any one instance) it would effectively kill the All category.

Also would the flood of new traffic make it impossible for individuals to bear the cost of small instances?

That’s just what I think anyway. I’m not totally against federating with them, but very skeptical.

I played a shit ton of WoW when I was younger. It stopped being fun a long time ago. Mostly it was only fun with friends.

D3 also sucks. Played a lot of that at launch, and also when the expansion came out (can’t remember the name). D2 was always way better, and now with D2R, I don’t think I’ll ever need to buy another game in my life.
