Amanita bisporigera, or the aptly named eastern North American destroying angel, if anyone's wondering.

From Wikipedia:

The principal amatoxin, α-amanitin, is readily absorbed across the intestine, and 60% of the absorbed toxin is excreted into bile and undergoes enterohepatic circulation; the kidneys clear the remaining 40%. The toxin inhibits the enzyme RNA polymerase II, thereby interfering with DNA transcription, which suppresses RNA production and protein synthesis. This causes cellular necrosis, especially in cells which are initially exposed and have rapid rates of protein synthesis. This process results in severe acute liver dysfunction and, ultimately, liver failure.

I could not confirm that it causes liquefactive necrosis of the liver specifically, however. I wouldn't doubt it, but I couldn't confirm it.

Edit: I should clarify, I got this from the original thread on Bluesky, not my own identification.

It used to be common for foreign TV shows and movies to get localized titles, and dammit, I think that those titles had a lot of charm. So I'm bringing them back myself!

Some of these are "full" titles, some of these are more meant to be subtitles that come after the original title; some of these are more literal translations while others are more evocative and often groansome localizations; some of these are popular anime, some are less popular. Regardless, I hope I have at least achieved the aesthetic of an eyeroll-worthy second-hand video cassette box from Norway in the 1990s.

How many of these my favorite concoctions can you recognize? Maybe you can see a familiar name here or there, maybe a cognate, maybe that's not enough and you need to ask me to provide a translation/explanation/cognates. It'll be interesting to see how it goes.

So without further ado, break a leg:

  • Av to planeter og ett hjerte
  • Bestilte du en hare?
  • Celler i arbeid!
  • Drømmer ninjajenter om ninjamenn?
  • En brud i fem deler
  • Fandens nabojente
  • Forlovet til den ukjente
  • Hverdagsliv
  • Kjærlighet, direktesendt!
  • Kjærlighet, fjortis-syndrom og andre vrangforestillinger
  • Komis kommunikasjonsvansker
  • Min haleløs mester
  • Min "lutesøster" Umaru
  • MoRo-byrået
  • Pupper eller ei, kan jeg slå deg!
  • På lørdagsgodt og søndagsvondt
  • Retts-Saks-Papir
  • Senko med reverompa
  • Solskinn-skisse
  • Spøkelsesfortellinger
  • Stridsvogner kjørt i skjørt
  • Søtt uansett, eller, "Jeg elsker deg til månen og tilbake!"

I guess I'll reveal all the correct answers at the end of the day if they haven't all been guessed by then...

Edit:

Correct answers in order

One can find a few things on Archive.org and Netflix, and one can find a few very short fan-made dubs (fandubs) on YouTube, but as a whole there isn't a lot that's easy to find. The Norwegian Dubs Wikia (Norske Dubber Wiki) has many anime that I can't find on any of the three aforementioned services.

But as said, even Norwegian subs is good enough for me. I just want to reduce my reliance on the English language, so that I can improve my Norwegian and improve my Japanese simultaneously. Of course, I could make the subtitles myself and share them, if nobody else has done this work already — I'm just scared that I'd make a lot of grammatical mistakes (according to other people, at least). If I had a proofreader this maybe wouldn't be a problem...

Yeah, of course you'd quote MLK and not Sakai or Fanon or Sankara or Bishop or Du Bois or Newton or bell hooks or Barbara Smith or Malcolm X or literally anyone but the most absolutely sanitized of Black activists or politicians... To quote MLK, not just in general but especially to quote the literal only speech of MLK that you ever hear about in school, is rhetorically equivalent to saying "but I have a Black friend!" — it's an extremely tired trope just like this whole Reddit Speech thing you've got going on that shows zero comprehension of the issue and zero reflection or self-awareness on your part. Especially when you focus so much on definitions and seem to define race purely by skin color, rather than understanding racial issues through dynamics and relationships. This is the exact type of thing OP is talking about.

It is not at all unreasonable to understand that when there are systemic differences in housing and employment and generational wealth and health outcomes and so on and so on and so on, that someone who didn't get to experience the shorter end of the stick is going to have the lack of those experiences get reflected in sy beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors, just like any other facet of lived experience. Assuming that white people generally aren't going to ever fully "get" racial issues, and will therefore have an incomplete understanding of all other issues with which racism intersects; and moreover assuming that when white people benefit from the oppression of racial minorities which they get to live shielded from, that they broadly get to live in enough comfort that they won't be easily driven to genuinely radical thinking... That's not being a racist, really, that's just like assuming that a medieval peasant isn't going to ever fully "get" microbiology when microscopes haven't even been invented yet.

When you pull the old device of "oh so it's OK for them to do this but when I do this to them then it's a problem" it's denying that differences do exist in the lived experiences of people of different racial and ethnic categories. The following is what it means when someone is judged by the content of sy character rather than the color of sy skin: that everyone has the potential to understand others or to achieve great things, when the systems of society that blind some to the suffering of others, or keep those others down, no longer exist. "Content of sy character" should not be taken to mean that race is a non-factor in someone's lived experience.

My mom (early 60s) has a hard time remembering the names of anime, or sometimes chooses to use her own nicknames for them. I have always enjoyed sharing these and sometimes quizzing people on what the original title might've been.

Here's a nice long list of every name I've recorded, ordered from most opaque to most obvious, followed by the actual name of the series. Feel free to comment how many of these anime you got, and how many nicknames/misrememberings you had to look at before you got it.

When it was announced that My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic was ending in 2019, I decided to try expanding my interest in My Little Pony into an interest in animation/cartoons more broadly. And you know what that meant?

That's right, I started watching Soviet cartoons and learning about their histories and production, including learning some basic Russian in order to get access to Russian-language sources, and in that way I got a much more nuanced understanding of the USSR and the perspectives of those who lived through it. And where did that lead me? COMMUNISM.

And attempting to get into animation from around the world also naturally meant that I started watching anime, in particular slice of life leaning on CGDCT. 'Twasn't much surprise then that I'd eventually have a dream wherein I wore something resembling the K-On! school uniform while showing "my new boyfriend" around town, basically living as his doting girlfriend, and woke up wishing I'd stayed dreaming. And that was one major contributing factor that would eventually lead to my gender crisis in 2020!

THIS IS TRULY THE ESSENCE OF MATERIAL DIALECTICS ON DISPLAY RIGHT HERE!

Tmw you profiteer off of a settler-colonial project that gets the [K-slur]s out of your sight and makes them useful as instruments of slaughtering the Afro-Asiatic Hordes(tm). Tmw you're happy to see Jews and Arabs killing each other because that means you don't have to do it yourself, and you'd rather see that than Jews and Arabs as a united force against imperialism. Tmw you're given free reign to decide what is and isn't antisemitic because you have a certified "Jewish Friend" from one whole Europe away. Tmw as long as you can obscure the settler-colonial relationship with the ol reliable "3000 years" line you can act like "wow why are the Israelis and Palestinians both so violent to each other? Must be something in their... genes, maybe? Just kidding... Unless?"

Tmw you can't say any of this out loud and you have to temporarily concede white privilege to the Israeli Jews and talk about the "only democracy in the Middle East!" because the Overton window isn't Quisling enough to say the quiet parts out loud, and until then settler-colonial imperialist game has to recognize settler-colonial imperialist game with this liberal bullshit. Overton window doesn't pose many restrictions for complaining about Muslims and Arabs though, so you can just fire away with the same dehumanizing and conspiratorial rhetoric you're one day gonna openly use for Jews as well

Therefore it's actually an allegory for a USA which annexed Canada. Celestia and Luna represent class collaborationism, unicorns represent Anglophones, pegasi represent Francophones, earth ponies represent Hispanophones, and all the indigenous nations and vassals and neocolonies and other races are represented by the sapient non-ponies.

I don't know how every other part of MLP:FiM lore fits into this but yeah that's my analysis, I don't make the rules.

"Fun" fact: the State of Israel banned Yiddish-language theater and periodicals in 1949 and continued to enforce severe restrictions on Yiddish-language media through the 1950s, and founding father David Ben Gurion even once referred to Yiddish as a "grating, foreign language", despite the existence of a distinctive Palestinian Yiddish dialect which had evolved among sections of the Old Yishuv since the 16th century. You might not be surprised to learn that active state suppression of the Yiddish language, as well as physical violence and psychological torment towards Yiddish speakers by fanatical Hebraist Zionists pre-1948, contributed greatly to the Yiddish language's current endangered status...

...Hmmm, I wonder, what exactly do liberals call a state and movement with a long history of using physical violence, intimidation, harassment, propaganda, and other forms of torment, as a means with which to systematically and methodically destroy a centuries-long facet of Jewish culture?... Geez, I dunno, the word escapes me at the moment for some reason. This conflict is just too gosh durn complex!

Bit idea (hexbear.net)
submitted 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) by Erika3sis@hexbear.net to c/chapotraphouse@hexbear.net

Bits are the standard form of currency used throughout Equestria in various episodes of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic as well as other fourth-generation My Little Pony media. Bits are small, round coins made of gold or silver with an embossed rim. Various designs printed on them are visible in "Three's A Crowd", in the IDW comics' Friends Forever Issue #8 story "Reins, Trains and Carts with Wheels", Friendship is Magic Issue #26 story "High Plains Ponies", and Friendship is Magic Issue #28 story "Root of the Problem - Part 2: Flower Power", in Gameloft's mobile game, and in a deleted scene from My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Friendship Games. Silver Shill, Gladmane, "Street Rat", S06E08 Unnamed Earth Stallion #4, "Beuford", S05E06 Unnamed Earth Stallion #24, and S05E12 Unnamed Earth Mare #4 have cutie marks of or including bits.

Dollar signs are used to indicate bits in the IDW comics' Friendship is Magic Issue #9 story "Zen and the Art of Gazebo Repair", Friendship is Magic Issue #10 story "Zen and the Art of Gazebo Repair - Part Deux: 'If You Only Have a Hammer, You See Every Problem as a Nail'", Friends Forever Issue #8 story "Reins, Trains and Carts with Wheels", and Friends Forever Issue #12. Filthy Rich, Upper Crust, Long Shot, Roger Silvermane, Big Shot, Summer van der Hoof, Issue 13 Unnamed Mare - Dollar Sign, and Friends Forever 16 Unnamed Filly - Veronica Lodge, have cutie marks of or including dollar signs, and Stinkin' Rich and Issue 23 Unnamed Filly - Lucy van Pelt, have cutie marks of or including cent signs.

"Bit" is a colloquial term for certain coins, and also the term for the mouthpiece on a horse's bridle.

You're jumping the gun and honestly being a bit smug about it. It says in the article "new structure of Zapatista autonomy", which makes this sound less like a collapse and more like a cryptic announcement that they're just restructuring.......

......Noooow it could well be that the restructuring ends up bringing the movement closer to Marxism-Leninism, but y'know we'll cross that bridge when we get there. For now it's like, don't diss them, OK? The Zapatistas are our friends.

[-] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 54 points 11 months ago

“We will also begin explaining what the new structure of Zapatista autonomy will look like, and how it was arrived at.”

This part makes it sound like they're basically just restructuring, not giving up.
