Please down vote this post, it is a press release from a ultra right wing xenophobic Australian political party

I remember this being discussed at length on various forums at the time (the legality, questions about what would happen if it all fell into the sea.) but as with so much of the Internet, it appears to have been largely lost. Luckily I was not imagining things this time and did find a couple of references.

There are plenty of better reasons to hate The Verge; reposting Press Releases as "news", jumping on trends of public opinion, 12 minute video summaries of 30 minute events, staff who think Debian is some sort of anti allergy medication (this has gotten better, but there is still a little too much Tim Cook semen spitting at times.), "reporters" who have the job of reposting anything from Techmeme and techurls, the stench of Vox elitism, staff posting quote tweets as news and staff posting their purchase recommendation emails from Amazon (with affiliate links added) as "deals".

All that being said, it's still leagues ahead of Gizmodo and I do think it's worth reading.

A lot of paranoia on this community :(

There's a few sign in checks (The variety makes me think Disqus or something similar.), a couple of keep alives, your phone registering for Wi-Fi calling, Fallback DNS requests, a couple of CDN requests which I would get is likely update checks and finally YouTube content for NewPipe. I think I'm seeing five tracking cookies based on the rest of your apps here, probably being sent "Do Not Track" requests.

Have a look at Beeper, essentially an app which connects to the web version of Whatsapp, unfortunately does not support calls but for chats and group chats should cover everything.

In terms of a light version, it's unlikely. They're playing to their biggest markets of India and Europe, where these features are well used (I've seen a lot of statuses used for "Good Morning messages", and business announcing discounts or news.)

I dislike stories, but I have a very small social circle, none of which think waking up or buying a pretty looking cocktail as an achievement worth sharing publicly.

Not only is it pretty common for a democracy to be pretty open about how they spend their tax budget, it's really common for these figures to be discussed when attacking America 🙄
