Hi!

I'm in the market for a new laptop and I'd like to consult with the community about what's being recommended on the year 2026.

This is a laptop that I intend to use for both playing games and using as a mobile coding platform so battery and horsepower are the main points that I'd take into consideration, prioritising battery power.

I do not care if it's otherwise bulky.

I am currently encountering issues with AMD hardware on my main machine so just having a guarantee that the hardware is not gonna flop on me would be a big plus.

All in all! Thanks for giving my post a read and any answer would be appreciated, specially in the 900€ range.

I know you gotta store the passwords hashed but doesn't that just move the goalposts? How come someone can't use the hashed end result to get into the service it was used for?

At my current job, I'm the only one doing any sort of programming work. I basically am the "tech solutions" guy and although we do have an IT department. The work we do is bastly different.

So this is a great oportunity for me to present open source software and, while my current company is a deeply entrenched windows user, I have been able to convince colleages and my boss that sometimes straying from it has lots of benefits (specially in the wallet department).

Without further ado, here are the open source projects I managed to implement onto my fully windows company:

  • A ubuntu LTS web server: One of the bigger projects I was tasked with was making an internal utilities website. As linux is king in the web world it was fairly easy to get this setup approbed and as an added bonus I got to implement a fairly similar '0 downtime' setup I saw showcased on youtube. Using industry standard tools like docker or git and some good ol' bash. Here we use pgAdmin to connect to the Postgress server and do basic maintenance tasks.

  • Headwind's mobile device management service: This one I'm fairly proud of, my IT department has 500+ phones to setup each year and all of these were done manually, as they didnt find any provider that didn't offer a cost-effective solution. With Headwinds model I was able to setup another small test server and showcase it. While the solution aint perfect, I managed to convince my manager that this is something we should go forward with. To be honest, I'm just proud that I saved hours of work for whichever poor interns would have been tasked with manually doing half a thousand phones.

  • Mozilla Thunderbird: This one's one of those quick and easy fixes. New reports only came in through mail, so I setup a client that downloads these to files the other departments use. Here I am sure I can find a way better solution, specially one that doesnt require a different instance per target folder.

While this is an overall short list, progress is progress and I am constanly on the look for replacements for tools I feel forced to use.

For example, Power Automate. I am looking for a solution that lets me export to an exe and has the strong selector tools it's using. AutoHotKey seems to be a great replacement but it's still just relying on screen position which doesnt have the portability I need. Pywinauto has great promise but I havent gotten the downtime to re-implement something working on it.

The latest massive youtube sponsor seems to be data broker removal services. As a rule of thumb is if I see the same sponsor more than 3 times it's just a scam.

But as I've recently become assaulted with scam calls due to trying to find a different job the prospect of services like these seem to be more and more enticing.

What do you all think? Is actually a service?

Hi!

Someone asked me to revive their 20 year old laptop as its no longer working on their installation of windows XP.

This baby has around 512MB of Ram, 1.6 GHZ Intel Atom.

This is my first time doing something with hardware older than myself so I'd love some insight from people around.

Hi!

I've a cronjob that I don't want to be concurrent but it needs to leave a long-running process after it does it's job that I set up with a nohup command.

The deal is that once the script has setup the lock doesn't get released so any further calls to the script just get ignored.

Is there a better alternative/flag I'd use? I couldn't discern much from the flock or nohup man pages.

Solved: With bit more fiddling found the - u flag on the flock man page. You can unlock yourself at the very end of the script.

Hi!

I am finally dabbling in some self-hosting and I'm having trouble on the very final steps.

The setup:

I have a simple NUC that's hosting caddy and a dynamic dns solution

I have port forwarded ports 443 and 80 to my local machine

I have a domain pointing towards my public ip

My router is a sercom 00200106 brought by my isp

The problem:

¿I can't seem to get past the router?

Whenever I try to get in through my local network I get an "intercept.hmtl" from the router and anyone to get from outside just gets a timeout.

If anyone has any idea how'd I go about moving forward the domains "https://gonzako.com/" I have managed to get caddy to show the "hello world" through localhost so I know the service is working

Many regards!

Gonzako

Edit: I am not behind NAT as I did a traceroute towards my public ip and it did only a single hop

This happened to me irl. They ask me to mess a bit with tarot cards and as they're leaving they tell me "You'd go think about stuff before go you out dating. All men are predators". When I ask them that sounds incredibly prejudiced they just respond with "It's in the studies". I was perfectly fine when feminism meant egalitarianism but thats is oughtright stupid vitriol that's gonna help noone.

So when company do it it's fine but when we do it to companies it's not?

[-] Gonzako@lemmy.world 50 points 2 years ago

another thing, don't append everything with "It's very urgent we need it fixed now" because you'll get put in the not listen to list
