Iran has been proven to be a paper tiger at best. Iran cannot win this conventionally

sir, we are literal hours into a war that could last months or even years

Also, was there even any chance that Iran could substantially disrupt an air attack like this? We all know that Iranian air defense is inferior to Russia's, and even they struggle sometimes to counter Western air weaponry. Israel's tepid responses to True Promise 2 that nonetheless seemed to hit several targets basically confirmed it. The problem isn't, as I see it, "Iran was just bombed and they got hit by the bombs, it's so fucking joever." No shit they were going to get hit by bombs, the West has specialized in making hard-to-counter bombers for decades. The problem is rather "Iran was just bombed and they seemed to have been caught off guard despite repeated, explicit threats from Israel that they would get bombed, leaving some of their officials out of position and thereby delaying their first response."

As stated in my post in selfcrit, I'm staying on the site to host the news megathreads and will keep posting as normal.

I already completely made up my mind. My post there wasn't to try and get people to beg for me to return, it was just to be transparent about why I felt like I was a subpar moderator in light of recent events and therefore why I left. I'm the only mod on self_improvement so I can't just leave (literally, the site UI doesn't allow zero moderators AFAIK) so once we've sorted that out, I will no longer be a part of the mod team and I've already left the mod chat.

incoming doomer opinion: the Battle of Huế proves that South Vietnam and the US are still absolutely in this fight and we'll probably see this war wrapped up soon as the Tet Offensive is failing

[-] SeventyTwoTrillion@hexbear.net 72 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

“During the Vietnam War... every respectable artist in this country was against the war. It was like a laser beam. We were all aimed in the same direction. The power of this weapon turns out to be that of a custard pie dropped from a stepladder six feet high.”

MORE MEDIA COVERAGE CHANGES PEOPLE'S OPINIONS ABOUT WAR AND GENOCIDE

the issue with trying to change opinions on imperialist wars (and many big topics) is that it presupposes that they will 1) be convinced by arguments of imperialism's evil if that imperialism also appears to benefit them; 2) decide to then act on those changed feelings; and 3) do so in a productive way that actually has an impact on events and not mere peaceful marches (to "raise awareness" or whatever).

to make these conditions apply, one would need to

  1. Firmly demonstrate that ending imperialism, or wars, or homelessness, or oppression, etc is in their tangible self-interest - not as a moral question, nor as some weird like "you'd see less people complaining about it if it was solved!" but something that would materially benefit them. If you can't do this, such as if you're talking to a business owner or landlord or otherwise well-off person, then you're probably not going to succeed and should move on to other people. Even people who would actually benefit from the end of empire simply aren't aware of the material arguments for it and are just like "well, y'know, I guess it would be good morally to stop genociding countries but, y'know, for me and my family, what would that do for us?"

  2. Find an activity - even one only tangentially related - that the person can do (even better if there are local organizations but not strictly necessary; one can follow BDS or spread theory online if that's all they have the free time to do), rather than leaving them wallowing in misery about how the world sucks and engaging in distractions to cope with it, even to the point of mindlessly, constantly, and miserably consuming the video recorded pain of others, as you say, "media porn", as if by doing that and decrying it as bad, this achieves something. And resisting the temptation to draw your own ego into it by, for example, thinking about whether this happening while you live in a Western country makes you guilty; the philosophers can deal with that question, what matters is helping the people actually being harmed, not your own sense of privilege or guilt about it

it's really an unbearable experience.

before 2022 I was well aware on an intellectual level that the media was bad and misrepresenting things and had strongly ingrained most of the more lib-accepted critiques about how it spreads negativity and panic for views and profit, etc. but nowadays when I'm exposed to it, it's a much more visceral dislike and disgust. not sure if I've just changed and it's been the same the whole time, or if it's also gotten much worse as well, but it feels like they've perfectly triangulated the perfect way to deliver information that is simultaneously devoid of substance, meaning, and accuracy. it's like watching paint dry, but if the paint was in the shape of a swastika

The Cradle: Yemen’s strategic escalation into the Mediterranean

The Yemeni “circle of fire” – its maritime reach – now encompasses the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Indian Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea. On land, Sanaa’s focus is on impacting Israel’s geographic depth, particularly its southern regions which abut the Red Sea. In multiple speeches, Ansarallah leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi has emphasized Yemen’s staggering advances in military capabilities, both quantitatively and qualitatively. These advancements are made possible by various factors, most notably the real-world testing of their arsenal. Recent broadcasts showcased a distant suicide drone targeting a ship in the Red Sea, equipped with a camera on its nose. Additionally, there has been significant Yemeni progress in the use of winged and ballistic missiles: according to military analysts, for the first time in history, anti-ship ballistic missiles were deployed against seaborne vessels, a qualitative advancement in Ansarallah’s military bag of tricks.

[...] Since early April, various European naval commanders have thrown their hands up in full public view. Jerome Henry, commander of France’s Aquitaine-class FREMM frigate Alsace – deployed in the Red Sea for 71 straight days – said on 11 April that his ship had depleted its entire combat arsenal, and while it would head to port to replenish those munitions, would return to face an impossible mission: "We didn’t necessarily expect this level of threat. There was an uninhibited violence that was quite surprising and very significant. [The Yemenis] do not hesitate to use drones that fly at water level, to explode them on commercial ships, and to fire ballistic missiles."

[...] Yemeni Brigadier-General Shamsan points out that the US defense system failures, and growing risks faced by the anti-Yemen naval coalitions, have “forced it and its allies to withdraw more than 18 ships from the theater of operations, as the number of American ships that left reached 10, while eight ships belonging to European tools left.

Shamsan says the rapid development of Sanaa’s military capabilities during the ongoing war has positioned Yemen as a pivotal player not only regionally but globally, owing to its strategic position overseeing one of the world’s most crucial maritime passages. As Ansarallah’s phase four operations commence in the Mediterranean Sea, Shamsan declares that Yemen has now effectively implemented a maritime blockade and economic stranglehold on Israel, which heavily relies on sea routes for the vast majority of its imports. This blockade, in turn, represents a significant leverage point against both Tel Aviv and its western allies, which have failed to protect their interests in the Red Sea or counteract Sanaa’s embargo on ships entering the ports of the occupation state.

Far from being a mere political and military backwater, Yemen has demonstrated far-reaching military capabilities and impressive strategic planning that has confounded the world’s greatest naval powers. Sanaa’s formidable maneuvers in West Asian maritime zones have catapulted it to the forefront of the region’s Axis of Resistance as the member most capable of influencing global maritime security and regional stability. As the US and its allies rally around their newly constructed “aid pier” on Gaza’s Mediterranean coastline to, as many suspect, consolidate the area as a future site for US military operations and protect Israel’s oil and gas platforms, Yemen is emerging as a frontline adversary in that far-flung theater.

Western navies are complete paper tigers.

French Communists want alternative to Mélenchon-driven left coalition

“The seriousness of the international situation, as in France, calls on the left to live up to its responsibilities. Unfortunately, it has not”, the French Communist Party (PCF), which is also part of the left-wing alliance NUPES, said in a statement issued on Sunday. The PCF, which met at its National Council, suggests ending NUPES, the alliance formed for the legislative elections in June 2022. It now brings together left-wing MPs in an “intergroup” in the National Assembly. Today, the NUPES, “formed […] under the hegemonic will of [Mélenchon’s party] LFI, has become a dead end”, the communists said in their statement.

“The recent refusal to describe the atrocities committed by Hamas as terrorist acts” and “the insults of LFI leaders, comparing the PCF leadership to Nazi collaborationists” were among the reasons listed in the statement.

This “weakens the rallies needed for peace in the Middle East and the fight against the Israeli army’s war crimes”, the PCF National Council added.

...

However, the Communists still want to “bring together the people, the world of work and the left” through “a rally that is useful and respects our differences”.

...

“I don’t even know what to say about Jean-Luc Mélenchon anymore. I have the impression that he and his camp are engaged in a strategy of permanent conflict”, explained Marine Tondelier, the head of the Green party, on France Culture on Saturday.

Western leftists have gotta be the most useless fucking people on the planet. Holy fucking shit.

In a widely condemned televised speech, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has said his people should accept the prospect of going hungry as the price of the country's success. In the remarks on Saturday, Sisi also called his opponents “liars, saboteurs and wicked”, as critics questioned the billions spent on infrastructure projects that he has undertaken as many Egyptians struggle to make ends meet.

“Don’t you Egyptians dare say you would rather eat than build and progress,” Sisi said. “If the price of the nation’s progress and prosperity is to go hungry and thirsty, then let us not eat or drink,” he added. “Don’t undermine the cause of our nation and make us the world’s laughing stock. Stand fast and transform the cruel circumstances we are going through into a gift. The harder you stand fast, the sooner it [the economic crises] will pass."

In a meandering and times informal dialogue, the Egyptian president suggested ways in which he could “destroy” Egypt, if he were so inclined, by distributing pills to foster chaos in the country. Sisi said that he spoke with the Supreme Judicial Council regarding how easy the country would be to destroy and had concluded that giving 100,000 people in “difficult circumstances” tramadol, a strong opioid, would do the trick at a cost of no more than $30m.

Lukashenko, to Ukrainian journalist, emphasis mine:

Lukashenko: "I've drawn this map specifically for you. Russia will crush your personnel and hardware over there. Those motivated, ideologically strong, Nazis as they are called, those ideologically strong men are no longer around. All of them have died already. Who is fighting here, then? Those you can catch in the streets and bring here. They are not prepared. Well, and a bit of military personnel. They will not be able to defeat this machine. Russia has changed. At present, Russia has cutting edge weapons at the front. There are plenty of drones now. Well, it is a totally different army now. And the most dangerous thing... I don't know whether I should tell you or not..."

Reporter: "Please do!"

L: "They have 250,000 volunteers! Russia has 250,000! Who are not at the front yet!"

R: "In reserve now?"

L: "Volunteers! They have been trained and they are in reserve. Do you understand how many people 250,000 are? Russia has fewer people at the front now. So they are staying on the defensive. Not because they cannot advance. They don't have to! And you keep walking like people who have had too much drugs and alcohol. You walk [with assault rifles] at the ready like German Nazis in movies. You walk towards these barricades. But you cannot even reach them. We can see it, and it is so. You cannot even reach the minefields. You are just getting slaughtered in thousands. Your counteroffensive cost 45,000 in dead and maimed. 45,000! So they are on the defensive. Your losses are 1 to 8. 1 to 8 at the front line. And 250,000 in reserve with cutting edge hardware. You will be crushed. Then they will do what you and your leadership fear the most. They will cut you off by advancing towards Moldova, towards Transdniestria. What will you do after that? And Poles rub their hands in glee. Pushed by Americans, they will cut off the western regions. You will have only this little bit left, if any at all. This is what will happen to you. And the state, the Ukraine you and I know, will cease to me. Our native land. Yours and mine."

R: "Has this history been determined? What you are saying now..."

L: "If you don't stop now, it will happen! If you don't start negotiations now. Russia suggests it. You don't want it? Well, if you don't want it, we don't need it! Russia is powerful enough. No West will help you in this regard. You have to take your head into your hands and act on the basis of reality. Act in the interests of this huge and beautiful territory. The West is already starting to understand that nothing will come out of it. Ukraine will not be able to survive even with the West's aid."

Shamelessly stolen from Wikipedia:

The Soledar Salt Mines (also called Artyomsol Salt Mines after the State Enterprise Association Artyomsol that operates the mines) are located in the city/suburb of Soledar in the Bakhmut municipality in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. The scale of the mines is vast. The mines have 125 miles of tunnel, are at a depth of 288m, and many of the chambers are 30 meters in height, The largest resembles a hangar of about 100 meters long and 40 meters width and 40 m height, and has accommodated soccer matches and the inflation of a hot air balloon.

On the 5th of January, 2023, the Wagner Group and Russian Armed Forces took parts of Soledar's east, forcing the Armed Forces of Ukraine to step back and take up defenses further west and in the central parts of Soledar. The salt mine has since become a critical point for Ukrainian defense of Soledar and Bakhmut, utilizing the deep tunnels of the salt mine to maintain a defensive line in Soledar, as well as to keep stockpiles of supplies and launch attacks on Russian positions from their rear.

Latest updates on the Special Xmas Operation, raging inland from the Blue States ordered by Soviet Communist Brandon.

  • The new defense lines of the southwestern salient at New Mexico has been hardened after Blue forces gave up Colorado, surrounded as it was on 3 sides.

  • In the northwest, Blue offensives are making incremental progress into Idaho and some parts of Montana. The fighting is bitter now due to the cold.

  • The massive strongholds and disadvantageous terrain around the Rustbass, of course comprising Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana, continue to hamper Blue attempts to make progress, but the Reds are for some reason refusing to evacuate from Pittsburgh, which is the lynchpin of defensive lines in this area. Columbus and Cincinnati would be immediately threatened by the breakdown of Red defensive lines here.

  • The attempt early on in the war to take Florida and seize the key location of Mar A Lago has been long debated, such as on the purpose of the assault, and its efficacy. When Brandon said he was withdrawing forces from there as a good will gesture for negotiations, we were and remain perplexed, but the distance of the supply lines leading there must have been simply too long to be maintained.

  • Much speculation remains of whether Canada will eventually join in the combat to threaten the northern positions of the Reds, such as in the Dakotas.

  • On a personal note, I'm getting pretty tired of all this talk of the Ghost of Orlando and the calls of Slava Christmasi. And it's pretty fucking obvious which side is shelling the Shearon Harris nuclear power plant.

I'll be putting up effortposts and essays on the bulletins site, both to signalboost it a little more to people who mostly use the RSS feed, and mainly also to preserve them while the site devs need to make posts and comments beyond a few months ago unsearchable. And also to have it one full piece instead of split across multiple posts/comments due to the character limit.

So if you wanna write a long piece up on something you're interested in, or summarize a book or concept similarly to @shipwreck, then you can both write it up as a post (for the internet points and comment notifications), and, if you want, let me know (or I'll ask you permission) to put it on the site.

I'm having increasing difficulty maintaining the time and energy to put into these updates, especially after having moved. My earlier rhetoric about doing this until the war ended (or past that) sounds increasingly foolish now that the war won't be won, militarily at least, for many months longer. I'm also returning to academia soon, which will keep me very busy, and also want to get back to reading theory more, as I've had less time for that, and my reading list is building up.

My choices are thus:

a) fully 'hit da bricks' and stop the updates and the megathreads (presumably somebody would take over posting them, at least while the war continued);

b) stop the updates but maintain the megathreads, posting some of the most important pieces (e.g. from MoA, Naked Capitalism, etc) I find in a few times per day;

c) maintain the updates and the megathreads, but prune the updates to the point where I'm essentially just posting headlines. And might mean that I also couldn't post summaries as, well, I'm not really reading the articles (and the difference between the update and the summary would be fairly negligible anyway).

I don't think the first option is necessary, but I also don't know how useful the third option would be to people. Like, this isn't (just) some kind of self-actualization exercise for me to know more about the news, nor a blog really, it's meant to be a resource. But I'm fine with doing just the headlines, it would take like an hour every day which is a time investment I'm comfortable with. The debate I'm having with myself is whether, at that point, if I'm really filling a niche - i.e. if there are better resources if all you want are the important headlines.

So I'm split between b) and c), essentially.

But for now...

Here is November 14th's update! TLDR? Here's the summary!

Next thread here!

Just an update on my situation: I'll almost certainly be moving within the next week or two. The last update for a little while will be next Wednesday, the 19th. I'm going to then take a break to set things up, get to know my surroundings and such. I hope to be ready to start doing this again on the 28th, but I will post that week's megathread on the 24th.

After that, I will hopefully be able to keep doing this more consistently and things will get less busy than they have in recent weeks. I strongly appreciate all the compliments I get and I'm glad to be part of such a great community! :Care-Comrade:

September 26th's update is here! TLDR? Here's the summary.

Next thread here. Sorry, the threads start breaking down at above 1000 comments.

edit: I've found a number of sources to use, mostly based on analysis rather than purely event reporting. I've kept some of the better mainstream sources, but I decided that I was gonna cut the six most aggravating sources out entirely: NYT, WaPo, Bloomberg, Forbes, Business Insider, and Politico. I'm not yet sure if I have enough for fully fledged updates (or maybe eventhe new material is too much) so I will do tomorrow's update with what I've found so far, and if I think I need more, I will add more. Unless I managed to get it just right the first time, I think I will end up iterating over the next week towards the best balance of lots of good sources that don't take too much time to sift through.

Here is September 7th's update! TLDR? Here's the summary.

No updates on Thursdays.

Here is September 9th's update! TLDR? Here's the summary.

Here is September 10th's update!

A few improvements:

  • I'm gonna try and include more images, now that I've figured out how to do it on my end without things getting confusing. Namely, I now have a whole folder on my computer dedicated to this stuff where I can put things. A truly incredible development. However, a lot of the articles don't have images, and if they do, they aren't all that noteworthy - think "typical stock image of an oil barrel or a dude looking frazzled at a stock market screen". But still, there's usually at least 1 or 2 images that I can and should put in every day for added pizazz.

  • I'm actually using the tagging system, instead of it just being "ukraine" and "russia" the whole time, and will be slowly working on adding them for the previous updates too. Eventually, you will be able to search by country throughout the whole update list, from the ever-present "china" or "united states" to the very rare "uzbekistan".

  • More consistent climate and space updates. Hopefully.

  • 100% more love for our trans comrades.

  • Adding what you people post in these megathreads to the summaries too. The tyranny of only referring to my own work without talking about anything of the comments you guys make shall end.

On that note: do you have a lot of knowledge about the current state of a particular country (beyond mindless electorialism)? Do you, for some reason, have a lot of knowledge about hydrogen power, or the fossil fuel industry, or renewables, or rare earth mining, or have you delved into a wikipedia rabbithole on a topic and became a semi-expert? Hell, are you an actual expert? If the answer to any of the above is yes, please comment more! There are like 200 countries on this planet and I realistically only have time to talk about a fraction of them on a given day, and of that fraction, only a single article. I may have a vibe about certain countries, but if you wanna rant about the current situation in X country or how neoliberalism is ruining Y country, but you think "nah, who gives a shit" - I give a shit. Some of the best content in these megathreads is people being like "The general media narrative around what's happening in this country is wrong, here's what's actually going on here."

I'll even quote your username in the summaries if you do it. It's a meritocratic version of the general megathread's username list that they do every time. The thrill of a purple number next to the bell in the upper right corner of your screen can be yours for the low low price of a microessay for our reading pleasure.
