If you're gay and you sleep with a woman, then you will burn in the PIT! Repent sinner! For such a vile act, only Christ can save you! You have gone against God's plan for you! It is a mortal sin for a gay man to sleep with a woman!

Don't forget the Roman human sacrifices that they insisted totally weren't human sacrifices!

The Romans made a big deal about not performing any form of human sacrifice. They saw it as barbaric. And yet, a culminating part of any Roman triumph involved something that was human sacrifice by another name. You ever seen recreations of a Triumph in a movie, where they're escorting captured war prisoners bound in chains? Sure, some of those ended up as slaves. But a fair number of those marching were marched in front of the Temple of Jupiter and executed in front of it in an elaborate ritual ceremony. But no...it totally wasn't a human sacrifice to Jupiter!

Give me a break. The Romans were no different than the Aztecs. The Aztecs were just a little more flamboyant about their human sacrifices.

It's ultimately going to take multiple lines of evidence. Yes, there are compounds that we think are strong indicators of life; we don't know how to explain them except for life. However, we can never rule out some other abiotic origin for that compound exists that we simply haven't discovered yet. We don't know what we don't know. Abundant life however is likely to cause all sorts of these biosignature compounds to be present in an atmosphere. If we find a planet with many of these compounds, we'll have many independent lines of evidence pointing at life being present there. That is how we are likely to finally accept that life has indeed been detected.

Another pathway that may result in the acceptance of a detection of life is us learning more about the origins of life. It's possible as we learn more about how life started on Earth, we will discover that mechanisms to get it going make it a near inevitability where the necessary conditions exist. That would make its detection much easier to accept.

Little known fact. In the lead up to the Challenger launch, NASA considered sending Big Bird up on that flight, full sized puppet, puppeteer and all. There is an alternate timeline where Big Bird died in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986.

Because most of the crew find it weird that the bridge officers of nearly every ship and station are casual Earth supremacists who are only interested in human games, music, and culture. Among most bridge crews, even obscure 20th century human culture is more popular than contemporary Vulcan or Andorian culture. Starfleet talks a big game about diversity and inclusion. But in their hearts, the officers are all a bunch of human supremacists. You pretty much have to be to rise through the ranks. For most of the crew though, ancient human games like baseball are shunned as symbols of casual racism.

Exactly. For middle class folks who still have to rely on the stock market for retirement, the best option is to just buy dumb index funds and hold them til retirement. You aren't going to be able to outsmart and out time the actual Wall Street traders who have PhDs in mathematics, access to microsecond trading, and a trading bankroll of billions. If you need to rely on the market, buy and hold is the only sane strategy. At least then you minimize the number of trades you make and the chances for the snakes to screw you over.

If you want real investment advice: no. If you're investing for retirement, and you're not near retirement age, you have decades ahead of you before you need these funds. You know those people who "lost everything" in the 2008 recession? Sure, some people lost their jobs and were forced to burn their retirement savings just to keep the lights on. But far more lost money because they sold when the market was in the toilet. The market did eventually recover, but the timing of the recovery couldn't be predicted in advance, so they lost out on much of the recovery. The market went back up, but they still had their 401k sitting in cash. They lost money on the dip, and then they lost money again on the upswing.

Also, keep in mind that Trump's policies mean that cash savings will be far more vulnerable in this crash than in the 2008 crash. At least in 2008, the inflation rate was basically zero. Cash didn't lose much value just sitting in your savings account. But Trump is trying to weaken the dollar to make imports more expensive and US exports more appealing to foreign consumers. And Trump's policies are expected to be rather inflationary. Cash is no safe haven right now. You could try to move your assets to foreign currencies and companies, but this crash is global. The US set itself up as the linchpin of the global economy after WW2. If the US stumbles, everyone stumbles. The only country that won't be hurt much by this crash will be North Korea. But there really aren't that many investment opportunities for foreigners in the hermit kingdom.

It sucks, but at this point you should just ride it out. If you still have decades till retirement, just ignore your retirement balance for the next few years. Just ride it out and remember that you're investing not for today, but for decades in the future. Or consider the parable of Bob, the world's most unlucky investor.

That's amazing that a patient can be infected by a tumor located 5,000 km away from their body!
