Regardless of how "civilized" humans are, borders are just lines on sheets of paper. The real border is where you can place your feet by use (or threat) of violence. The law between nations is the law of the jungle.

Withings Scanwatch is cross-platform. No need for a branded device to use it, does all the usual tracking stuff plus afib detection. One of the reasons I chose it was that it looks like a watch and not a toy. Also, depending on how you use it, it can go for days between charges. Most of the similar "brand locked" devices seem to only go 1 or 2 days max.

The original idea for Youtube was "make your own tv shows" so it wasn't really intended for highbrow entertainment, infotainment, etc. Then they started promoting videos that were longer format, so the "watch my sister go splat trying to jump in the pool" videos got replaced by how-tos, unboxing, and explainers. Then tiktok came along and Youtube is trying to turn itself into "watch my sister go splat in 60 seconds or less."

It's sad that with the concentration of developers and creatives at their disposal -- not to mention the financial resources -- they can't innovate something beyond tiktok. Instead of tagging along after a trend and wind up looking like an old geezer dressing up like a 16 year old.

The uncertainties of existence make people seek out an authority to provide safety. Unfortunately, that authority needs to make difficult decisions without the normal emotional fallout that would cause most people psychological harm, so the ones most suited for it are sociopaths. Sociopathy (a tendency toward lack of empathy, including -- in some cases -- even the desire to cause others psychological or physical pain) is an aberration. Perhaps it's even a disability in the sense that persons are not "neurotypical" and therefore require special consideration. Unfortunately, the culture greatly rewards sociopathic behavior, so not only do they gravitate towards positions of power, they are sometimes propelled toward them.

So, in short, you're right.

Hmmm. Maybe it's intentional. A purge. Flush out the old crowd with their adblockers and their nonsense ideas about "free speech," and whoever stays -- out of ignorance or compliance -- is left with the ad-ridden hellscape that is the new interface and the official app.
